NDTV senior journalist Ravish Kumar has written a letter to MOS External Affairs M J Akbar asking him questions most journalists have been wanting to ask for sometime now.

Among the Indian journalists, there is none greater than M J Akbar.

A brilliant editor and writer, M J Akbar’s ambitions repeatedly overshot the limits of his profession.

He joined Congress in the ‘80s and when his career flagged returned to journalism without looking like a man, who had sold his soul.

M J Akbar was a fine specimen of what an India soaked in Nehruvian ethos could produce.

He was fiercely secular and liberal, and had fought communal elements across religion. His book Riot after riot, a spot reporting masterpiece, shows how political interests play havoc with the lives of ordinary people.

And then he joined BJP under Modi and learnt to live in peace with yogis and sadhvis, who targeted the Indiathat had made him as well as his own community.

M J Akbar loves his liquor, but is a devout Muslim, someone who does Haj and prays regularly.

So what makes his conscience so malleable that it is able to slide through difficult contradictions? Is there a tip for other journalists who want to develop a similar rubbery skin?

This is the gist of the letter written by Ravish Kumar to M J Akbar.

Ravish Kumar says he, like many others of his profession, endures routine abuse. His old mother is also not spared.

There is pressure on journalists to act like official spokespersons of parties or become targets.

Whatever Modi may have done or not done, his ascendance has coincided with unprecedented polarisation in the country.

But one man, who made an easy transition without suffering any injury, was M J Akbar. For his effort he was rewarded with a Rajya Sabha membership and now a ministership.

Ravish Kumar wants to now how it is done.

Forest officials struggled to separate an elephant calf grieving over its dead mother in a forest on the outskirts of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

The officials came to know that an ailing elephant had passed away at the Narasipuram forest area. When they reached there, they found a calf crying and trying to wake up its mother.

A video, which went viral, shows the baby elephant desperately clinging on to its mother.

Media reports said five elephants had died in the forest in the last two weeks.

There are differences of opinion over the cause of the deaths. The Times of Indiaquoted an IISc professor Raman Sukumar saying it was not unusual for elephants to die of natural causes.

About 2% of subadult and adult female elephants to die every year on an average due to natural causes, he said.

He also said illegal dumping of garbage close to elephant corridors could also be behind frequent deaths. The animals reportedly feed on the garbage and suffer adverse consequences on their digestive system.

A new group has brought the evergreen Bollywood romance number Dheere Dheere Se Meri Zindagi Mein Aana in Sanskrit.

The lyrics of the Honey Singh version of the originally Aashiqui song have been translated into Sanskrit and sung by Pankaj Jha.

And as one of the comments say it is uttam, ati-uttam to hear.

The initiative is from a little-known group which calls itself Learn Sanskrit the Easy Way.

The song is their maiden attempt and they seem to have hit it on the head. Sanskrit has lost ground due to disuse and bringing out covers of popular Bollywood numbers could be a good start to make.

Dheere Dheere Se Meri Zindagi Mein Aana, sung by Kumar Sanu in 1990 hit movie, Ashiquie, was recently rendered by Honey Singh recently and enacted by  Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor.

Here is how the chorus goes in Sanskrit:

Shanai, Shanai mama jeevane agachcha
Shanai, Shanai mama hruday choraya

(Dheere Dheere Se Meri Zindagi Mein Aana,
Dheere Dheere Se Dil Ko Churaana)

July 8, 2016, NewsCrunch

The truth about the viral photo, which had a woman politician watering a plant in rain, has come out.

The politician in the photo is not Alka Lambha as was alleged. The honour goes to Pravina Thakur , first woman Mayor of Virar in Mumbai.

ABP News informs that Pravina Thakur was taking part at an event held as part of  Maharashtra  government's effort to plant two lakh saplings.

Though it started raining during the event, Pravina Thakur stuck to the script and went on to pour water on a  lucky plant, much to the delight of the shutterbugs.

The photo went viral, as many mostly those opposed to AAP, started sharing it, saying  it was MLA Alka Lamba in it.

Pravina Thakur is the wife of Virar strongman Hitendra Thakur, the president of Bahujan Vikas Aaghadi. His party swept the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation polls by winning 106 seats.

A joint operation of Rashtriya Rifles and Jammu & Kashmir police killed him soon after the tweet in a raid on a hideout at Bumdora in Anantnag. The security forces had been tracking him with accurate intelligence over the last few days.

Twitter was not amused. There seem to be a fatigue with the excess of cess slapped too frequently for various reasons. Also, while levying a cess for education is in social interest, many are not sure if protection of cows merit the same privilege.

Narendra Modi became the first Indian PM to retrace the historic train ride taken by Mahatma Gandhi at Pietermaritzburg station, South Africa, and tweet about it.

As the Attenborough's movie Gandhi has educated generations of Indians, it was here, Gandhi was thrown off the train after trying to take a first class ride, which was then for whites only.

The historic moment taking the Pietermaritzburg train, which does not seem to have changed much since Gandhi's times, clearly overwhelmed Modi.

MEA celebrated it with a series of photographs, which  shows him sharing the seat with a South African official and standing at the door.

There was another imaginatively shot black and white photo, which Modi personally tweeted. It shows him in a deeply contemplative mood and it is not clear if Modi's black and white photo was taken before or after the team photos.

It you observe closely, you will find Modi has changed his seat for the  back and white photo, which in the last 3 hours has been  re-tweeted by 2.5 K people.

Modi later visited the Pheonix Ashram where, among other things, he posed for a memorable photo, pointing finger at a bust of Gandhi.

July 10, 2016, NewsCrunch

District-level BSP leaders are reportedly circulating copies of Smriti Irani's famous Parliament speech, in which she snubbed Mayawati.

That may be one of the keys to explain Smriti Irani's political downfall.

The relationship between Smriti Irani and media was acrimonious and personal. Even days after the reshuffle, media continues to analyse what got her the boot.

Indian Express, sums up all possible reasons, in a provocatively titled article The shrinking of Smriti Irani.

Among so many other reasons that led to her ouster, the Dalit factor made a contribution; the more Smriti Irani rose in BJP, the more Dalit votes appeared to flee from the party.

The Rohit Vemula episode not only pitched the party against Dalits, it also turned Smriti Irani into a  hated figure in the community.

Her famous speech in the Parliament in which she challenged Maywati may have won the immediate approval of Modi. But the political cost of it sank in gradually.

Mayawati is a Dalit icon and as a rule, other parties defer to that. And here was a hysterical Smriti Irani challenging and even humiliating Mayawati, under the glare of TV cameras.

The speech in which Smriti Irani offered to cut off her head and lay it at Mayawati's feet is being cleverly exploited by BSP.

Indian Express quotes a Dalit MP saying BSP’s district units are circulating the video of Smriti Irani challenging Mayawati and leaving the otherwise combative leader stunned.

The more people see it, the more Dalit anger builds up not only against Smriti Irani but also against BJP.

Given that Dalit votes are critical in UP, the party was left with little choice except shunting Smriti Irani to Siberia.

Another report in The Economic Times agrees with this assessment and states, BJP moved with alacrity to ensure Smriti Irani would not alienate Dalit votes in Punjab or UP.

At 53, she is obviously no longer the stunner of the Ram teri Gana Maili, but has enough oomph to make heads turn.

She is married to a former Buddhist monk, Dr. Kagyur T. Rinpoche Thakur, the child model in the vintage Murphy Radio advertisements. Along with her husband, Mandakini runs Tibetan yoga classes and a centre for Tibetan medicine.

The couple have a son named Rabbil and a daughter Rabze Innaya Thakur.

Born Yasmeen Joseph, Mandakini became a household name after debuting in the 1985 Raj Kapoor movie Ram Teri Ganga Maili.

After a fairly short Bollywood career, Mandakini courted controversy due to her alleged proximity to Dawood Ibrahim, a charge she denies, before finding the love of her life in Dr. Kagyur T. Rinpoche Thakur.
