A woman sarpanch of Moga district beat up a Dalit man and two other women alleging they were engaged in sex trade.

The victims have denied the charge and said they were assaulted over a land dispute.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows the Sarpanch beating up the man brutally and also delivering occasional blows to  the women, who are sitting next to him.

A group of villagers are seen egging on the Sarpanch, though none of them are seen hitting the victims, in the video.

The sheer brutality of the beatings which continue even as the victims wail, perhaps made the video go viral.

The victims have filed a complaint with the police, who are probing the case.

The incident reportedly occurred on July 27.

#‎StopHindiImposition‬ emerged as a major trend on the Independence Day
Staff correspondent, August 16, 2015, NewsCrunch

On Saturday, amidst patriotic fervour that swept the country, South India started tweeting anti-Hindi messages with the hashtag ‪#‎StopHindiImposition‬.

The trend held good for about four hours in many cities including Bangalore. At a count, it had received 30,000 plus tweets.

The campaign may have come as a surprise, but it was carefully planned.A Facebook page, PLE Bengaluru, had mobilised Twitter users and shared 69 messages that could be used for tweeting.

‪#‎StopHindiImposition‬ drew a response from many parts of South India while its epicentre was in Bangalore.

Unlike the anti-Hindi protest of the past, which was largely a Tamil Nadu phenomenon, the new campaign may emerge out of Bangalore and be initiated by Kannadigas, usually seen as the most docile of South Indians.

The Tamil Nadu anti-Hindi movement was top-down; it was mobilised by political parties though around popular emotive issues.

The new anti-Hindi campaign is getting organised on social media and is more lateral in nature.

The immediate trigger for ‪#‎StopHindiImposition‬ was apparently the PM's speech, which was entirely in Hindi, a language South has problem in accepting as its own.

But the resentment which powered it has been long in the making and that leads to the major site of protest -  Bangalore not Chennai.

The software industry changed Bangalore's demography immensely. Hindi, which was spoken by just about 2% of the city's population in 1991 is the new street language of Bangalore, due to an outpour of immigration from North Indian states.

The number of Kannadigas in the city has also gone up as Bangalore acts as a magnet for them as well. Kannadigas coming from other districts are more assertive of their linguistic identity than those brought up in Bangalore, who are more used to a cosmopolitan setting.

A new generation of Kannadigas are confronting Hindi spoken on the streets as lingua franca, the perceived or real arrogance of the immigrants and their increasing hold over the popular culture - note that Hindi sign boards in the city are a festering issue.

The Central Government's pro-Hindi stand in various sectors, Railways for example, adds fuel.

There have been tensions with Tamils and Telugus in the past; but Bangalore could fashion syncretic practices, which transcended the tensions. But the new immigrants, Hindi or otherwise, are a mobile force. They do not have the need  or the patience to seep into the local cultures.

While Kannadigas may light up the issue, as Saturday's experience shows, support will be quick in coming from other South Indian states.

A lady from Andhra Pradesh pointed out that there were 10 crore Telugus, who could live jolly well on their own without Hindi or India.

Staff correspondent, August 16, 2015, NewsCrunch

An image of the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, draped in Indian Tri-color has been found to be photoshopped.

Along with it, the news that Dubai's iconic building would adorn Indian national colours for two days has been declared a fake.

It had been earlier stated that Burj Khalifa would light up in Indian Tri-colours   - Saffron, Green and White - on August 16 and 17 in honour of the visiting Indian PM Modi.

The information came at the backdrop of the New York's Empire States Building beaming Goddess Kali's images  to create awareness about the looming ecological disaster.

The news that Burj Khalifa would honour Modi went viral on social media and even a few TV channels reportedly covered it.

But on Sunday, Emaar Properties, which owns Burj Khalifa, told a Dubai publication that there was no plan to cover Burj Khalifa, with Indian Tri-color.

Emirates 24|7 quoted a company spokesman saying reports of special celebrations at Burj Khalifa to honour Modi were not correct.

The declining population of vultures, which consume the dead at the Silent Tower,  has prompted many Parsis to explore alternative ways to dispose off the corpses.

A Parsi association has built a new crematorium and prayer hall in Mumbai at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore, which will become fully functional later this month.

Parsi priests, who had earlier opposed any alternative to the Silent Tower are now growing receptive to the crematorium. The Indian Express reported that a group of seven to eight Parsi priests have agreed to conduct the last rites of those who would be cremated.

Silent Towers, where dead bodies are left to be consumed by vultures is seen as an individual’s final act of charity, are integral to the Parsi way if life.

But as the number of vultures have been on the decline, it has been taking even weeks for the bodies to fully decompose.

A news anchor of Pakistan’s Express News had an oops moment when she spat out the vulgar word L*N when trying to say “London” on camera.

The anchor was reporting on the murder of Doctor Imran Farooq, an MQM leader in London.

She said: “Mqm ke Markaz 90 Karachi Mein Dr.Imran Farooq ke L*n Mein Qatal Hune ke....”

After pronouncing the dirty word L*N, which is penis in Urdu, the news anchor  realised her blunder. Horrified, she immediately stopped newscasting and tried to wriggle out with a meek explanation.

But the cat was out of the bag and the damage was done.

A lone sprinkler stands at an unidentified station mindlessly pouring water on a slowly passing train. The water drenches the coaches as well as the people sitting inside.

The unsuspecting passengers, sitting next to windows or squatting near the door, are worst hit. Before they realise, the sprinkler has done its job,

The video is two years old. But at the backdrop of the on-going Swachch Bharat campaign is interesting to watch.

To underline India’s commitment to its blue collar workers in the Gulf, PM Modi visited a labour camp at ICADResidentialCity in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

A video shows the workers at camp applauding Modi and trying to touch his feet. He chatted with the workers and found out firsthand about their problems in the region.

“The PM’s visit to the labour camp was a strong message that the country would not ignore the welfare of its Indian workers,” an  Indian government official told Reuters.

Modi’s visit comes at the backdrop of the horror stories of labour exploitation coming out of Qatar. The tiny Arab country, in race to finish preparations for the 2022 FIFA Cup, stands accused of treating its migrant labourers brutally

Workers have also blamed the Indian government for ignoring their plight.

UAE, which is hosting the World Expo 2020, would need Indian workers to build the infrastructure. Modi’s visit is a message that India would ensure the safety of its workers.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devedra Fadnavis asked Police to probe a complaint made by an American woman that an unidentified Mumbai youth had publicly masturbated at her.

He has directed Joint Commissioner of Police Deven Bharti to probe the matter.

A Mumbai man allegedly jerked off at Maryanna Abdo, a writer who works out of Mumbai occasionally, on Monday.

Though she tried to catch him, he managed to escape.

She posted his photo on Twitterand asked other Twitter users to retweet it to try to trace him.

Though the photo went viral, NewsCrunch decided not to publish it as it could not independently verify the story.

The incident allegedly took place at 7. 40 am at Colaba.

Maryanna Abdo graciously said she would not blame the country for the incident as it happened elsewhere as well. However, women in India, specifically foreigners, complain that Indian men jerk off at them in public.

Her complaint is the third incident of public masturbation reported in the last few months.

In July, a Delhiwoman who hired a TaxiForSure cab alleged that she found the driver  masturbating while driving.

In May, a blog written by a British travel blogger Lucy Hemmings describing her disgusting experience went viral. She said, she was sitting at a bus stop in Mumbai, when an Indian man started masturbating while staring directly at her.

The Krishna temple at Muscat, which got land thanks to Vajpayee
Staff correspondent, August 18, 2015, NewsCrunch Nearly two decades before Modi, former PM Vajpayee had managed to get land from Oman government to build a Krishna temple at Muscat. During his visit to Gulf, Modi had announced that Abu Dhabi would give land to build a Hindu temple. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, visited Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait in 1997, as an Indian leader of opposition.

The Telegraph reports that he conveyed to Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the ruler, the request of the Indian community to build a temple.

Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who believes in Hindu rituals, readily gave land on which a Krishna temple came up.

Last year, the Sultan, who is suffering from cancer, had invited vedic brahmins from India to perform a homa hoping for a cure. Oman has one more temple, of Shiva, which was built by Gujarati merchants 350 years ago.

Interestingly, no other Indian leader was willing to take up the demand for Krishna temple land fearing it may not go down well with the secular image of the country.

A college in Sullia taluk of Mangalore district suspended two girls, who were allegedly photographed sitting near liquor bottles and cigarettes.

The KukkeShriSubrahmanyeshwaraCollege took action after the photos went viral on WhatsApp.

A college official told The Times of India that the principal acted after a students' organization and local people demanded action against the girls.

A report in The Hindu identified the students' organization as ABVP and said it had even given a representation to the police.

The principal told The Hindu that he had taken disciplinary action as the girls were students of the college though the alleged photos had been taken outside the campus.

The KukkeShriSubrahmanyeshwaraCollege is run by a temple trust, which comes under the state government.

Assistant commissioner of Puttur Basavaraju, who is also the trust president, told TOI he would visit the college to seek a report.

The KukkeShriSubrahmanyeshwaraCollege had tried to ban burqa three years ago but was ordered by the District Administration to refrain from doing so.

The WhatsApp-suspension incident follows a similar case of moral policing that occurred at a Suratkal college early this year.

The college suspended a boy and five girl students after a Facebook photo of theirs went viral. The photo, which showed  the boy lying on the lap of the girls in their classroom, "created emotional outbursts" amongst the student community, the college said.

The boy was later thrashed by unknown persons and had to be hospitalised.

Mangalore with a communally-charged atmosphere has emerged as the ultra-conservative belt of Karnataka.

The Kullu District police have started a probe into a complaint that a café in Kasol refuses to serve Indians.

The probe follows a social media uproar over the racist treatment being meted out to Indians in their own country.

Stefan Kaye, a British musician, complained that the owner of Free Kasol cafe refused to serve an Indian woman with whom he had gone to eat.

Ironically, the owner of Free Kasol café, is an Indian.

There are reports, which suggest that Indians are discriminated against in other establishments in the area as well.

A video by Nalanda TV reports that Kasol, once a land of apples has now turned into a land of hashish.

It has become so popular with the Israeli backpackers, who come here for trekking and drugs, a two kilometer stretch at the village looks like mini Israel.

There are cafes, restaurants, hotels, Internet parlours and shops with Hebrew signboards.

Everyone in Kasoli, including local villagers, speak Hebrew.

The short video is informative as long as you can put up with the terrible accent of the narrator.

A still from the publicity video, which compares Hardik Patel to Sardar Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Staff correspondent, August 18, 2015, NewsCrunch

The restive Patel community in Gujarat has chosen a 22-year-old political upstart Hardik Patel to send a message.

The message is as ambiguous as the rapid rise of Hardik Patel, who is being called New Modi by his supporters.

A rally held by Hardik Patel on Monday at Ahmedabad grabbed national attention. As The Indian Express pointed out it was attended by an astounding 4.5 lakh people belonging to the Patidar or the Patel community.

Hardik Patel, who still speaks with an adolescent voice, says he has one aim: To get reservation in the government jobs and colleges.

But given the wealth and the political clout of the community – there are six Patel ministers in Anandiben Government -  reservation seems to be more of an excuse to flex political muscle.

Over the last few years Patels have chosen to follow Modi, who comes from the

Modh Ghanchi community. The new mobilisation could be a sign that they are charting a future beyond Modi.

But why are they rallying behind Hardik Patel is a bit of a mystery. The man, who comes in jeans and likes to pose with guns, now claims the title ‘Patidar Hriday Samrat.’ There are also comparisons made to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Son of a mid-level BJP leader, Hardik Patel started Sardar Patel Sevadal in 2011 for the “protection” of the Patels. On the record, the work done by this organisation is said to have caught the imagination of the Patel community.

Off the record, Congress and BJP blame each other for his rise. Hardik Patel describes himself as a man without any party affiliation. The party or the CM in power does not matter as long as they meet his demand, which is reservation for Patels.

Quick thoughts on NDTV debate on Hindi imposition - do not match fanaticism with chauvinism (with video)

1) NDTV journalist Sunethra Choudhury was biased; she wanted to hear the pro-Hindi voices. But to be fair, she was an equal opportunity journalist.
A screen grab of the NDTV show which debated #StopHindiImposition (Video below)

Staff correspondent, August 19, 2015, NewsCrunch

The NDTV ran a short programme on the Twitter trend - #stophindiimposition.

The debate was superficial, but the TV channel took a Twitter hashtag and introduced it into mainstream media, raising its profile. Now, you can expect other media outlets to keep an eye on the issue.

Here are our quick observations on how the debate went:

1) NDTV journalist Sunethra Choudhury was biased; she wanted to hear the pro-Hindi voices. But to be fair, she was an equal opportunity journalist.

2) It was rightly pointed out that this round of linguistic campaign has a  social media trigger. It can escalate easily.

3) The winner of the debate was Dr Appoorvanand Jha, a Delhi University Hindi professor from Bihar. He agreed that the grievance is genuine and opposed imposition of Hindi. For this controversy to resolve amicably, all parties need to understand the other's point of view. Hats off to Prof Jha, for showing how to do it.

4) Anti-Hindi imposition opponents are in danger of exaggerating the threat from Hindi. Many of our regional languages are facing an existential threat and the government's imposition of Hindi is not the major culprit here. It needs more systemic thinking and action to save our language and culture.

Having said that the Indian government has no business favouring one language over another.

5) Do not match fanaticism with fanaticism. If Hindi poet Ashok Chakradar wants to speak in Hindi before an English audience, it is his problem. If you insist on speaking Kannada before a mixed audience, you lose an opportunity to get your point across.

6) Do not replace Hindi fanaticism with your own chauvinism. Languages grow only when the doors are kept open to assimilate influences. Do not impose a party line. If NewsCrunch is comfortable calling Bengaluru Bangalore for its own reasons, do not abuse it.

7) South Indians have made a common cause against Hindi. This is an absolutely new development. Will the new brotherhood survive the next Cauvery agitation? The campaign against imposition of Hindi has drawn support from non-South Indian states as well.

8) As NewsCrunch had earlier pointed out, Bangalore lit this round of anti-Hindi imposition fire.

9) Sunethra Choudhury also tweeted a Google data that said there was a 94% growth in online consumption of Hindi content. So, she asks if the protests against the language are irrelevant.

The picture is incomplete till we factor in similar data on other Indian languages. Google also said 21% of Indians wanted to access Hindi content on Internet. That is to say, 79% did not want to do so.

Let us respect the diversity in the country and build unity through it.

On Tuesday midnight Maharashtra police arrested five students of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) from the campus.

A total of 17 students, including three girls have been booked  for rioting, damaging properties and other charges.

The Tuesday night arrests were a response to the Monday gherao of FTII Director Prashant Pathrabe and his staffers by the striking students. The FTII officials were confined to he office for eight hours, till the police intervened to  resolve the matter.

The students, who allegedly vandalised office furniture, were protesting  a new policy on assessing the projects of the 2008 batch.

The police said they arrested FTII students following a complaint from Prashant Pathrabe.

A video shot on the mobile camera on Monday shows that the temperature was running high.

The students are seen protesting peacefully but vociferously. A policeman in a yellow shirt picks on a student in blue t-shirt and shoves him violently. The student caught unguarded is thrown for a distance, hits the wall and falls on a chair.

The police action follows the 72 day old agitation of FTII students, who are opposing the appointment of BJP member and TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as FTII chairman.

The Mumbai police's hunt for the man, who had masturbated  at an American woman, ended  on Wednesday morning with the arrest of Gopal Valmiki.

Gopal Valmiki works in the Colaba area of Mumbai.  A few workers of the area tipped off the police after coming across the accused's photos distributed by the police.

Maryanna Abdo, an American writer, had  alleged that a man had masturbated at her on Monday morning. Though he had ran away when confronted, she had managed to take his photo, which she shared on Twitter.

In a bid to trace him, Mumbai Twitter users re-tweeted the photo sending it viral, even catching the attention of Mumbai CM Devendra Fadnavis, who directed the police to act.

Though many on Twitter had apologised to Maryanna Abdo, she had said she did not blame the country for her disgusting experience as these incidents occurred else where as well.

NewsCrunch had earlier not published Gopal Valmiki's photo as it was not able to verify the complaint independently.

An American man identified as Dominic Low has shared a video, which shows his girl friend trying to set his penis on fire.

The video shows a sleeping Dominic Low covered in a bed sheet. A woman, who is partially visible in the camera frame, removes his bed sheet to reveal that he is sleeping only in his boxers.

She pours a flammable liquid, possibly a nail polisher on his penis, and lights it up.

As the flames burst out, Dominic Low wakes up and tries to douse the fire with an alarm.

The woman, not in the frame now, is heard shouting that he had cheated with her co-worker and got what he deserved.

Many comments said the video was possibly a prank. No other detail about it is available, nor is it possible to confirm if Dominic Low is the real name of the person in the video.
