Nawazuddin Siddiqui says his success still surprises him.

Staff correspondent, August 19, 2015, NewsCrunch

Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who famously struggled for long years in poverty, says money is not important in life.

He says he has not carried a single paisa in his pocket for the last three years. He told The Hindustan Times that while he focuses on acting, his brother manages the business aspects of it.

An NSD actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui worked in bit roles as an extra for over a decade till he found a break. His BajrangiBhaijaan role has brought him immense popularity in both India and Paksitan, while his next movie, Manjhi is one of the most awaited movies of the year.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui says his success still surprises him. When fans run behind him, his first instinct is to think that they are chasing someone else.

He remembers his days in Mumbai when he went on long stretches without earning a penny. He says he is uncomfortable in designer clothes, PRs, and the blitzkrieg of film promotions.

“My job is to go on the sets, and deliver the world’s best performance. I don’t think I will ever be comfortable with the other stuff,” he told The Hindustan Times

Twinkle Khanna gave a tough time for Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan by commenting on his height or the lack of it.

While releasing her first book Ms Funny Bones on Tuesday, Twinkle Khanna described Aamir Khan as a terrific performer and a short man.

Twinkle Khanna and Aamir Khan came together for Mela, which did not click, but have remained close friends.

She also offered an anecdote to share how much Aamir Khan had impressed her with his short stature, reports NDTV.

During Twinkle Khanna’s last pregnancy, as she went into the labour, to make her feel comfortable, the doctor asked her to imagine a scene involving someone she likes.

Twinkle Khanna says she took the advise seriously and started shrieking about Aamir, and his height.

Twinkle Khanna, who has built quite a reputation for her acerbic humour, was unsparing on the people close to her, including husband Akshay Kumar.

Aamir Khan, who attended the boor release function with Karan Johar, said Twinkle was exceptionally talented especially when it came to insulting people.

For the record Aamir Khan stands below 5 feet 7 inches, but manages to divert attention from his stature on the sheer strength of his performance.

Filmmaker Karan Johar announced on Wednesday evening that superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt would be starring in Gauri Shinde’s next movie, which is yet to be named.

The film will be co-produced  by Karan Johar along with Red Chillies Entertainment owned by Shah Rukh Khan.

There is no information on  what the movie would be about and if Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt would romance each other, though several media reports suggested as much.

The information did not go down well with either Shah Rukh Khan or Alia Bhatt fans - there was near consensus that if the reports proved to be right, the movie would be a casting disaster.

At 49, Shah Rukh Khan is almost twice as old as Alia Bhatt and many said she would be better off playing his daughter.

At a rally in Patna on Wednesday RJD boss Lalu Prasad Yadav did a hilarious mimicry of PM Modi.
Lalu, class mimicry act

Staff correspondent, August 20, 2015, NewsCrunch

At a rally in Patna on Wednesday RJD boss Lalu Prasad Yadav did a hilarious mimicry of PM Modi.

Modi had rushed to Bihar immediately after after returning from UAE and announced a package of Rs 1,25,0000 for the poll-bound state.

A confident looking Lalu tore into the package in his speech calling it political jumla and different from what had been promised earlier.

What caught attention was the finesse with which Lalu ridiculed the way Modi had announced the package - dramatically doling out crore after crore.

Modi had spoken with such passion, Lalu advised him to take it easy or run the risk of bursting one of the veins in the throat.

A short video of Lalu's mimicry uploaded by a new agency has gone viral. Here  is a longer version.

A camera has caught two Indian men, attacking Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at Winnipeg, a city in Manitoba, Canada.

They slap Mahatma’s cheeks and then remove their shoes to start delivering blows on the  statue.

A few people pass by giving them a stare, but the two men go on undeterred.

One of the men is a Sikh, while it is not clear where the second person is from.

Gandhi has been a target of conservative Sikhs, who are still rankled by his stand on Sikhism, which he saw as part of Hinduism.  He reportedly saw the separate language of the Sikhs and the institution of the Khalsa Panth as obstacles in assimilating Sikhs with Hindu religion.

Last year, a Gandhi statue had been vandalised at Leicester, UK, during a Sikh protest  against 1984 Delhi riots.

The Manitoba incident had been first uploaded on Facebook on 15th August, 2015.

Neelam Krishnamurthy, who lost her children at Uphaar fire tragedy, disagreed with the Supreme Court judgement on live TV.

The Supreme Court had on Wednesday fined Ansal brothers Rs 60 crore and let them off without any additional jail time.

The Ansal brothers owned the Uphaar cinema in South Delhi, which caught fire and killed 59 people. The probe established that the cinema had ignored all safety measures and even blocked emergency exit routes to put extra chairs.

In its judgement, the Apex Courtsaid the long delay in the trial, which ran nearly for two decades was a mitigating factor.

Speaking to India Today TV, on behalf of the Uphaar Victims Association, Neelam Krishnamurthy blamed the defence counsel Ram Jethmalani and the judges for the delay.

The judges kept the judgement pending for one year and did not list the case for 17 months, she said. The Supreme Court also kept giving adjournments to Jethmalani, who argued for one full year, she said.

In contrast, prosecution lawyers Tulsi and Salve were given just two days each, she alleged.

The Association’s attempt to expedite the case was blocked at every step, she said.

Saying Indian courts were only for the rich and powerful, Neelam Krishnamurthy said she regretted her decision of going to the court for seeking justice.

“I wish I had picked up a gun 18 years back and faced a trial. I would have come out by now and would have had some peace of mind," she said.

The 25-KM long Noida-Greater Noida Expressway has emerged as one of the most accident-prone roads of the country.

In the last eight months over fifty major incidents have been reported on this road.

India TV has compiled CCTV footage of the most horrifying accidents on this Expressway.

The most common culprit is lane indiscipline. In a perpetual rush, drivers ignore traffic rules and switch lanes at will. Doing this at 100 kmph is scary and the CCTV footage demonstrates that.

The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway follows some safety measures – there are frequent sign boards giving traffic directions and setting speed limits, though not many seem to take them seriously.

There are structural flaws as well. The 25-KM stretch has just two foot-over bridges.  Many pedestrians have died trying to navigate over-speeding vehicles to get on to the other side of the road.

The Noida–Greater Noida Expressway, a six-lane highway connecting Noida, Uttar Pradesh, to Greater Noida, a new suburb. was formally inaugurated in 2012.

The Deputy Collector of Ujjain District physically fought with a Police Constable posted at the famous Mahakal temple in front of a capacity crowd on Wednesday.

A mobile video, which captured the two exchanging blows and abuses, has gone viral.

Deputy Collector Narendra Suryavanshi went to worship at the temple on the occasion of Nagapanchami. He tried to dodge the long queue, which was resisted by constable Bhanvarlal, who had been posted on duty.

But Narendra Suryavanshi managed to go inside and offer prayers. When he came out, the two again confronted and came to blows, reports PTI.

A few unconfirmed reports said the Deputy Collector slapped the Constable and then got thrashed by him.

The video shows the other policemen and officials on the spot intervening and holding them down separately, while both of them shout abuses at each other.

Bhanvarlal is heard saying he has land at his village and would go and happily look after it, hinting that he did not care if the senior official got him dismissed. He also challenges Narendra Suryavanshi  to get close to hit him.

Though no complaint has been registered by either of them, the District Collector is reportedly set to probe the incident.

The Quint reports that  Hariharan saw the Tumpa Kumari video, which had gone viral, and took the initiative to train her.

But the report is not clear if she would be a full-time student of Hariharan. There is  also no information on how long she would stay in Mumbai and who is bearing her expenses at the moment.

The Quint also published a video of Tumpa Kumari performing her famous Aashiqui 2 song, Sun Raha Hai Na Tu, and with Hariharan nodding in approval.

It was the same song, which had gone viral and turned Tumpa Kumari into a YouTube star.

Many had offered to help the impoverished girl, who was at a Ranchi welfare home Brajkishore Netraheen Balika Vidyalay.

Most significantly, Zee TV had come forward to ensure that she received good training in music.

Tumpa Kumari lost both her parents at an early age. She has an elder sister, who had to start working at 14 to make a living.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Paytm founder's rags to riches story = Screengrab from a YouTube video (video below)
Staff correspondent, August 20, 2015, NewsCrunch

Serial entrepreneur Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who heads the billion dollar startup Paytm says he was so badly singed by the dotom crash, he tasted poverty firsthand .

Speaking to NDTV, he says there were days when he did not have money for dinner. He would walk instead of taking a bus to save Rs 10.

"Let's say having two cups of tea was a perk for me," he says,

The report unfortunately has no details on the circumstances, which forced Vijay Shekhar Sharma into the tight spot. It only mentions the stock market crash, which followed the dotcom meltdown of 1999, and  a failed venture, in the passing, without  getting into the details.

A Delhi Engineering College alumnus, Vijay Shekhar Sharma started his first company XS Corps in 1998 and sold it as well, while studying. Then he worked with a few companies in fairly senior roles before starting One97 in 2000, a VAS player, which  evolved successfully with the industry trends.

In 2010 came Paytm, one of the most important startups to emerge in the Indian tech space.

That's what his publicly available CV says without giving any hint of his struggle.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma has surely left his difficult says behind. Besides One97's success, Paytm propelled him into big league.  Jack Ma of the Alibaba Group invested 575 million in Paytm, which also counts Ratan Tata, among its investors.

This week Vijay Shekhar Sharma also bagged a payment bank licence from the Reserve Bank (RBI), which constitutes another significant initiative for his company.

In the NDTV interview Vijay Shekhar Sharma shared another anecdote, which shows the grit he brings to his business, which possibly explains his success.

A Hindi-medium boy from Aligarh, Vijay Shekhar Sharma joined the Delhi College of Engineering, which taught in English, a language in which he was seriously challenged. The lectures were so incomprehensible he describes it as his "Taare Zameen Par moment with alphabets flying around."

Unable to keep up, he even stopped attending lectures altogether. But he taught himself English using dictionaries and reading up second-hand magazines and made a strong comeback.

Teesta Setalvad gets NYT support - WIKI image

Staff correspondent, August 21, 2015, NewsCunch

In a long article published on on Thursday, The New York Times launched a strong criticism on Prime Minister Modi for systematically targeting social activist Teesta Setalvad.

It notes that under his regime Teesta Setalvad has faced CBI raids, accusations of being a threat to national security and a colossal fraud.

The NYT makes light of all these charges - points out that CBI has a well-earned reputation as a caged parrot.

The charge of colossal fraud refers to her handling of the money raised to help riot victims. Teesta Setalvad has been accused of paying herself and her husband hefty salaries and splurging on luxuries such as Subway sandwiches and buying sanitary napkins, NYT writes.

The Setalvads' bank accounts have been frozen, their passports seized, family savings gone. They are not able to pay their lawyers, it notes.

What is the motive of this "merciless campaign of leaks and attacks emanating from entities controlled by Mr. Modi or his political allies?"

It is to distract Teesta Setalvad from her campaign to ensure justice to Gujarat Riot victims. The campaign  against her has intensified as the Gujarat High Court is set to hear  a petition by Ehsan Jaffri's wife.

After Gujarat riots in 2002, Teesta and her husband began tracking down witnesses, collecting testimonials and records and getting legal assistance to victims.

The work they did helped the prosecution get more than 100 convictions, but which also made them targets of a decade-long campaign by the Gujarat Government, which escalated after Modi became the PM, says The New York Times.

Staff correspondent, August 21, 2015, NewsCrunch

RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav was criticised for passing a rude comment on BJP president Amit Shah, who was stuck in a lift in Patna for about 40 minutes.

A video clip tweeted by ANI shows Lalu Prasad Yadav saying a fat man like Amit Shah should not enter Patna lifts, which are made to carry slimmer people.

Twitter was prompt to condemn the Lalu remark, which was seen as personal and crossing the line. One of them blamed Lalu for keeping Biharis malnourished and small.

On Thursday night Amit Shah had got stuck in a lift at the state guest house in Patna, along with another party official.

The incident occurred around 11:15 pm and Amit Shah remained stuck inside the lift for around 40 minutes.

The Hindustan Times reported that Amit Shah, who was suffocated and panic stricken, was eventually rescued by the CRPF men. Amit Shah left for New Delhi on Friday morning.

A Delhi Public School language teacher, Richa Kumar, who had pointed out two spelling mistakes in an official letter sent by HRD Minister Smriti Irani has deleted her Facebook post.

The post, which had been made on August 11, had gone viral after it was shared by over 800 people.

On Friday, after a few media outlets started reporting on Richa Kumar’s post, Smriti Irani’s spelling mistakes blew up into a controversy prompting her to order a probe.

Smriti Irani had recently sent a letter to school teachers across the country, congratulating them on the performance of their students.

The words "minister" and "sansadhan (resources)" were spelt incorrectly in the letterhead.

Catching the spelling mistakes, Richa Kumar responded to them on her Facebook page. In a letter addressed to Smriti Irani, she said mistakes in the official letterhead were an affront to her sensibilities as a Language teacher.

She also attached the photos of the letterhead circling the mistakes in red ink.

Richa Kumar went on to advise Smriti Irani to ensure that the people, who worked for the ministry, were well educated.

It is not clear if the DPS teacher sent the letter to Smriti Irani or just posted it on her Facebook page.

But after the issue blew up on Friday, Richa Kumar seems to have had second thoughts on the advisability of counselling the high and the mighty of the country, and deleted her post.

A Delta Airlines Boeing 737-900ER that was getting ready to take-off at the Atlanta airport was hit by a bolt of lightning.

A video, which shows the exact moment of the lightning striking, has gone viral.

A passenger at another plane, Jack Perkins, whose plane was grounded because of the bad weather, shot the video with his mobile camera.

All the 111 customers and six crew, who were in the plane when the lightning bolt hit, are safe.

Planes are hit by lightning frequently, say on an average once every two years, and are built to withstand the impact of lightning.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the bolts usually hit the wing tip or the nose of the plane. The current discharged by the bolt will then travel through the aeroplane’s metal shell before leaving from another point.

An expert is quoted saying, you may not even notice when a lightning strikes a plane.

These are difficult positions avid readers of Kama Sutra may be familiar with, but here they get a good demo.

The message the video sends out is not how to twist and turn your body. But that it is ok to talk about sex without turning it into a taboo subject.

As one of them point out India, the land, which gave the ancient treatise of sex, is now ashamed of talking about it.

The agitation of Gujarat's dominant community for reservation targeted PM Modi and mocked at his famous 56-inch chest statement.

The 22-year-old leader of the Patel agitation Hardik Patel said Patels also had "56-inch chest" and would not stop till their demands were met.

He was addressing a rally of 1.5 lakh Patels, who had gathered at Vadodara to demand OBC status, and reservation in government jobs and education.

Modi had famously said that he had a "56-inch- chest" to indicate that he would be a tough PM, when contrasted with Manmohan Sinh, whom the BJP liked to depict as a wimp.

"Patels in Gujarat have 56-inch chests and know how to make government oblige to them on their demands", PTI quoted Hardik Patel saying.

The leader of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS)  said Patels in Gujarat would first follow the path shown by Gandhi and Vallabhbhai Patel.

"But if required we can become Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar (Azad) too," he said.

The Patel agitation for reservation has shaken up the Anandi Ben government, who has formed a seven-member committee to take a stand on the issue.
