Staff correspondent, August 22, 2015, NewsCrunch

On the eve of the uncertain NSA-level talks, Indian officials made public documentary evidence to show that terrorist Dawood Ibrahim was living in Pakistan, along with his family and close associates.

While India has always claimed that Pakistan has been sheltering Dawood Ibrahim, the scale of evidence it has released is unprecedented.  The documents include Dawood Ibrahim's latest photo, passport details and the activities of his family members and associates, according to an exclusive report by Shishir Gupta of The Hindustan Times.

Dawood Ibrahim lives in Karachi with wife (Mehjabeen), son (Moeen Nawaz) and three daughters (Mahrukh, Mehreen and Mazia). His daughter Mahrukh is married to Junaid, son of former Pakistan cricket captain Javed Miandad.

Here are the five documentary proofs released by India to nail Pakistan's lie that it is not sheltering Dawood Ibrahim

1) India has secured Dawood's latest photograph. He is now clean shaven and slightly balding; contrary to what many had believed, he has not gone through any cosmetic surgery.

2) Dawood Ibrahim has three Pakistani passports, which mentions three different residential  addresses. India has photographs of these passports and the details of addresses.

3) An April 2015 telephone bill in the name of Dawood Ibrahim's wife Mehjabeen lists their Clifton, Karachi residence as the installation address.

4) While Dawood Ibrahim stays put in Pakistan, the family travels around - Indian agencies have details of these sojourns. Destination, flight details and dates of journey. For example, wife Mehjabeen and daughter Mazia travelled from Karachi to Dubai on an Emirates flight on January 4 this year and returned on an Emirates flight on January 11, 2015.

5) Dawood Ibrahim's key associates Jabir Saddiq, Jawaid Chotani and Javed Patel a.k.a Chikna are also based in Pakistan They travel frequently to Dubai several details of which have been  documented.

The Modi Government’s ambitious plan to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of 1965 War, in which India scored a victory over Pakistan, has backfired.

Two high-profile full-page advertisements issued on Thursday are ridden with blunders and suggest that Pakistanemerged winner.

A full-page Hindi advertisement bafflingly declares that an Indian infantry division responded to a Pakistani attack with “fear”.

The advertisement perhaps wanted to use the word " datkar" (valiantly) but erroneously opted for "darkar" (with fear) to describe the response of the Indian Army to Pakistani aggression, reports The New Indian Express.

At the battle of Asal Uttar, India destroyed 100 Pakistani tanks between September 8 and 10, 1965. This was one of the largest battles in the war, which altered the scale in India’s favour.

But the English version of the ad published in select dailies rewrote history and said Pakistan’s offensive destroyed 100 Indian tanks.

As the ad stated: "...Pakistan's 1st armoured division pushed an offensive towards Khem Karan and by 10 September nearly 100 tanks lay destroyed in what is now known as the Battleof Asal Uttar."

The New Indian Express, which reported on the bumbling Indian ad campaign said the ads had been approved by the office of the Additional Director General, Public Information of the Army headquarters.

A concerned official blamed the media houses for the erroneous ads, an explanation, which was dismissed by other government sources.

The Telegraph reports that India’s self-defeating ad campaign was picked by Pakistani media and went viral among that country’s social media users as well.

"… Indiahas rewritten the entire history of the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war and virtually handed over victory to Pakistan," wrote The Express Tribune, an English daily published in Lahore.

Islamabad’s Naaz Haque posted on his Facebook: "Finally, the Indian government admits what the Indians wont... that their army is scared of Pakistani army."

The Indian Government has a dubious record of issuing negligent ads. Four years ago, an Indian Navy ad had showed the image of Pakistani aircraft.

In a clever scoop a Times Now reporter claimed to have put a call through to the Dawood Ibrahim residence at Karachi and managed to speak to his family members , including his wife Mehjabeen Shaikh.

A person, who came on the line identified herself as Mehjabeen Shaikh, Dawood Ibrahim’s wife, and said her husband was at home, but sleeping. “Please all after sometime,” she requested the Times Now reporter.

If the conversation is verified, the ease at which the call was placed shows that Dawood Ibrahim family is living in the open, using their real names, though Pakistan has consistently denied their existence in the country.

Given the interest in the security agencies of different countries in dealing with Dawood Ibrahim, recognised as one of the world’s most wanted terrorists, the scenario is baffling.

Going by the polite Mehjabeen Shaikh’s response, you could have spoken to any well-meaning middle-aged woman in Karachi.

Another Times Now reporter placed a second call and spoke to another person at the same address. However, this person was more guarded and did not let the call through.

On Saturday, The Hindustan Times had reported that Indian officials had marshalled documentary proofs to nail the Pakistani lie that Dawood Ibrahim was not in Karachi.

The Hindustan Times said the Indian agencies had a copy of the telephone bill that had been issued in the name of Mehjabeen Shaikh and gave the full address of their residence, where the instrument had been installed.

The bill, issued in April 2015, lists the address as D-13, Block-4, Karachi Development Authority, Sch-5, Clifton, Karachi.

The telephone bill released by the Indian agencies had blacked out the last four digits of the phone number +92213587xxxx. Times Now seems to have accessed the full number from its sources and placed a call hitting a jackpot.

Visitors fled in panic after a tiger escaped from its enclosure for about an hour at Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad.

The zoo officials evacuated the crowd quickly and tranquilised the Royal Bengal tiger, named Kadamba, which luckily did not come into contact with the visitors.

The Hyderabad Zoo keeps animals in mostly open enclosures, which may have helped the tiger to escape.

Unverified eye witness accounts said the tiger jumped off a 10-feet moat to taste freedom though temporarily.

A Zoo official told PTI that the visitors were never in danger as a three layer security surround the cages of wild animals.

Explaining the incident, he said the tiger had been taken to another cage for mating.

The animal, which was tired and irritated, refused to mate and tried to get back to its own cage, which had been locked forcing it to step into the open space.

An unverified video shows the tiger sitting in open space panting in exhaustion.

Bhakts take on North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un

Staff correspondent, August 22, 2015, NewCrunch

A few Modi supporters took on the tinpot dictatorship of North Korea on Saturday mistaking a parody account to be its real voice.

DPRK News Service (@DPRK_News) is a parody account, which masquerades as Pyongyang's official channel. It said on Saturday that North Korea had detained an Indian ship carrying weapons to south Korea and denounced "Indian president Narendra Modi" as an "imbecilic simpleton!"

DPRK News, which is brilliant in its satire, mocks North Korean dictator Baby Kim full-time and is followed by over 37,000 Twitter users.

For Modi supporters, the news that an Indian ship had been detained by a friend of China and Pakistan mattered less. What provoked them was DPRK News calling Modi an imbecilic simpleton!

DPRK News has been targeting Modi for the last few days; it has called him "bandit prime minister" and "a deranged lickspittle" and condemned his imagined belligerent rhetoric against North Korea.

One tweet even demanded trade sanctions against India for demented and hostile rhetoric of Modi.

Another said as Indian Prime Minister Modi continued with his belligerent rhetoric, North Korea had put its unbeatable People's Navy placed on high alert.

While a few Modi supporters believed that DPRK News was authentic, many saw through its game. Given its stringent stance against Modi, they said it was being run by a Pakistani.

A policeman, in uniform, has been caught on camera stealing petrol from an oil tanker at Roorkie, Uttarkhand.

The footage shot on a mobile camera and shared by India TV shows the as yet unidentifide cop drawing oil from  a stationary tanker in a white tub.

The act happens in broad daylight; there is some traffic around, but the cop is brazen.

Stealing oil from tanakers is a lucrative trade for local mafia all over the country. But it is not common to find a policeman in the act.

Ironically, Uttarkhand police had reportedly  launched a drive recently to stop theft from oil tankers.

The road that divides the Indian city of Jaigaon and the Bhutanese  city of Phuentsholing is one of the most intriguing border crossings of the world.

On one side of the road is the messy  West Bengal town of Jaigaon. On the other side is Phuentsholing, the gateway to Bhutan, the Shangrila in the vicinity.

A blog Keep Walking shares an account for the crossing over the from the Indian side.

You get a bus from Siliguri, which figures prominently on the Indian map, to Jaigaon.

There is not much to see in Jaigaon, a typical Indian town. From the Jaigaon bus station, you can take a shared auto to the crossing gate, which has separate checkpoints for pedestrians and vehicles.

Indians, Nepalese and Bangladeshis can enter Bhutan without a visa. They need to get a permit, however, for which they require a passport and one more official photo identity card. Admission formalities for other nationalities are more complex.

Phuentsholing is 20 times cleaner than Jaigaon, which has bad hotels with dirty toilets and bed bugs. Travelers are advised to not stopover at this town..

You get far better hotels at Phuentsholing for the same money. You enter and stay at a typical Bhutanese town, with friendly people in unique attire and traditional architecture. People speak Bhutanese, Hindi, Nepalese, English and Bengali.

From Phuentsholing, you can take a mini-bus to Thimphu, about 6 hours away.

Big insight from Ashley Madison data leak: More women in India seek extra-martial affairs
when compared to their counterparts in many other regions of the world.

Staff correspondent, August 23, 2015, NewsCrunch

The hackers, who broke into Ashley Madison, have released two tranches of 30 GB data about the
users of the adultery site.

The data includes email IDs, addresses, user descriptions, height, weight, passwords, credit card numbers and transaction details of users, who have sought sex outside marriage.

A Spanish digital agency Tecnilógica mapped these numbers on a world map, in effect, depicting the patterns of those seeking extra-martial affairs in different countries.

Here are the top five adultery trends from India:
1) Look at the map below. While most parts of the world has red dots, India has predominantly yellow.

Red dots are areas where more than 85% of Ashley Madison customers are men. In areas with yellow dots, men are less than that percentage.

Big insight: More women in India seek extra-martial affairs when compared to their counterparts in many other regions of the world.

2) New Delhi is the adultery 'capital' of India with 38,652 users. It is followed by Mumbai (33,036), Chennai (16,434),  .Hyderabad (12,825), Kolkata (11,807), and Bengaluru (11,561).

3) Several state capitals also have significant users - Ahmedabad 7,009, Chandigarh 2,918, Jaipur 5,045, Lucknow 3,885 and Patna 2,524.

4) Ashley Madison has users all over the country even in small places. People in places such as Jodhpur, Aizawl, Leh,  and Nagercoil are seeking partners outside their spouses.

5) The information on the profile of Indian users is yet to be crunched. But you can expect patterns reported elsewhere to hold good here.

In Britain, for example, scientists, government employees, police officers, health professionals and corporate employees are among the users.

Though there are single men and women seeking each other on Ashley Madison, the site targets those seeking extra-marital kicks in their lives.

Of the 37 million users of the site, the category of  ‘attached male seeking female’ emerged on top with over 18.3 million users.

Last month, Ashley Madison was hacked by group called Impact Team, which has threatened to release all user data if the website is not shut down.

2) New Delhi is the adultery 'capital' of India with 38,652 users. It is followed by Mumbai (33,036), Chennai (16,434), .Hyderabad (12,825), Kolkata (11,807), and Bengaluru 11,561.

Andhra Pradesh forest officials rescued a baby elephant from a 25-foot well on Sunday.

The calf had fallen into the dry well on Saturday night near Chikkapalli village in Ramakuppam mandal.

A herd of elephants  had raided the village looking for food, when a calf fell into the well in the dark of the night.

Though the disturbed elephants stood ground for sometime and roared furiously they left eventually leaving the baby behind.

After alerted by the villagers, the forest officials stepped in to get the baby elephant out.

They brought in a JCB machine, which partially filled up the well with soil, allowing the elephant crawl up.

A bunch of rogue Mumbai cops sabotaged India's covert operation to execute Dawood Ibrahim in Karachi, suggests R K Singh.

When Vajpayee was the PM, Indian agencies had got into a quiet understanding with gangster Chota Rajan to bump off Dawood Ibrahim. They  had begun to train Chota Rajan's men at  Maharashtra.

R K Singh said the operation was aborted by rogue elements in Mumbai police, who not only tipped off Dawood Ibrahim but also landed at the training site  with arrest warrants for Rajan's men. The cops were on Dawood Ibrahim's payroll he alleged.

In the course of the interview with Aaj Tak's Rahul Kanwal, R K Singh said at least four times that he could not confirm what he had just told. He said he had just heard it, there was no evidence, and the aborted covert operation was just talk in the air.

A former Home Secretary who has been privy to classified information,  is expected to speak more responsibly. He may have retired, but what he says carries weight, gives talking points to Pakistan.

At a time when India has made a strenuous effort to prove Dawood Ibrahim's presence on Karachi, R K Singh's irresponsible talk will have the effect of whittling it down.

Though there are reports of India launching and aborting covert operations to target Dawood Ibrahim, it is perhaps for the first time a former top official has gone on record about it.

It has been reported that an operation launched by nine Indian commandos nicknamed  Super Boys had been called off in the last minute.

R K Singh also said a covert operation should be launched against Dawood Ibrahim and if possible against Hafiz Saed as well.

Zee news reported that after Indian disclosures, Pakistani Army and the ISI had shifted Dawood Ibrahim from Karachi to country's North region Muri.

The Indian Superman, a movie you may not have heard about till recently, was being quietly enjoyed by thousands of video viewers, who were lucky to have stumbled upon it.

A recent review of the movie by The Surfing Violinist, brings it to the limelight and opens up for a wider audience.

In a short sentence, it is so awful,  it is a must watch.

The two-hour long movie was made in 1987, inspired by Christopher Reeve's Superman franchise.

It was produced and directed by B Gupta. Dharmenda played the biological father of Superman, while Ashok Kumar brought up the baby on Planet Earth, Puneet Issar plays Superman and the movie finished off his career even before it started.

The Indian movie lifts liberally from the original. So, when you see Puneet Issar flying, it is usually Christopher Reeve defying gravity. In a few scenes, Puneet Issar is also shown flying - but on closer look, it is an arms-stretched doll swirling around a rapidly panning camera.

B Gupta specialised in C-grade films. So, there is a mandatory bra-hooking scene and  other footage befitting the stature of the main Superman opponents, Shakti Kapoor and Bob Christo.

Before you click on the hilarious full movie below, do watch The Surfing Violonist's six-minute review of the Indian Superman - he manages to capture the soul of it.

After media reported that Katti Batti had moved Aamir Khan to tears yet again, it was jubilation time on Twitter.

Media reports said on Monday that Aamir Khan could not control his emotions at the special screening of Nikhil Advani's Katti Batti.

The film reportedly reminded him of classic love stories that had been depicted on screen.

Aamir Khan has followed Katti Batti closely as it features his nephew Imran Khan.

A few weeks ago Aamir Khan was photographed teary-eyed, when he emerged from a screening of Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The movie that tugged the heart-strings of many had been offered to Aamir Khan first, who had declined it due to lack of dates.

Aamir Khan choking on screen is not a new sight. The actor’s TV series Satya Meva Jayate, which deals with serious issues, had made both the audience and him cry on many occasions.

But Twitter decided on Monday that it had had enough of Aamir Khan’s crying business. It asked him to either take over the mantle of the late Nirupa Roy or approach Ekta Kapoor for a suitable role in her daily soaps.

Or, it told him to wipe his eyes dry and do what he does best- make people laugh.

Media jumped the gun, Twitter played politics and even police rushed to announce an award after DU student Jasleen Kaur complained on her Facebook that a man on a silver Bullet bike had passed obscene comments at her.

Delhi CM Kejriwal and DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal made statements supporting her, possibly even before police officials could brief them on the facts of the case.

Delhi police arrested Sarabjit Singh, 26, on Monday and booked him on serious charges, including sexual harassment.

NewsCrunch advocates a zero tolerance policy on women’s safety. But that should happen through the due process of law, not through a digital equivalent of mob lynching on social and mainstream media.

Jasleen Kaur wrote on her Facebook late Sunday night that a man had passed obscene comments on her at Tilak Nagar. When she cautioned him that she would file a police complaint, he dared her to do so and also allegedly threatened that there would be consequences.

When she took his photo, he posed.

There is no information in her post about the circumstances which led to incident.

Later on Monday she told IANS that she came in front of the bike when she was crossing the road. She pointed at the red signal and said he should have stopped. In response, he made obscene remarks," she alleged.

It is for the police to probe and bring out facts of the case and apply relevant provisions. Sarabjit Singh is presumed innocent until proven guilty and that is the cornerstone of Indian jurisprudence.

But media picked Jasleen Kaur’s post and amplified what she said. They published Sarabjit Singh’s photograph and went to town without his version of the story, with headlines that were partisan. In some media reports, Sarabjit Singh became a pervert, even a molester.

Here’s a sample of headlines that reported the incident:

When the Rohtak sisters made their allegations against three boys, media put them on trial. The Indian Army even cancelled recruitment order for one of the accused. A SIT team, which probed the case, recently rejected the allegations against the boys.

While media failed to learn from its past mistakes, Twitter users came in support of Sarabjit Singh though for the wrong reasons. They found that Jasleen Kaur had AAP sympathies and that made her the political opponent, and Sarabjit Singh, the wronged man.

An orange-coloured Lamborghini Gallardo caught fire and burnt down on Monday morning at south Delhi's Badarpur area.

The unidentified driver escaped unhurt in the incident, though most of the Italian luxury car was  destroyed.

The incident occurred around 9 am under the Badarpur flyover. The police have towed away the vehicle to probe how the Rs 2.5 crore vehicle caught fire.

Lamborghini Gallardo, which was discontinued in 2013, comes with a 5.5 litre V10 rear engine.

The Hindustan Times said a leakage in the oil tank of the car, which was on its way back from a service centre, was the cause of the fire.

After women engineers, it is the turn of women surgeons the world over to go viral on twitter, with the hashtag #ILookLikeASurgeon.

As of August 19th, following 19,000 tweets by nearly 5,000 participants, the hashtag had received more than 67 million impressions.

Heather Logghe, a North Carolina-based resident surgeon ignited this twitter storm on about August 7th, when she posted her selfie with the hashtag. But soon, she and another fellow-surgeon from Chicago got nervous and deleted their tweets.

Quickly picked up by Alison McCoubrey, a consultant surgeon in Northern Ireland, who posted and left her selfie on, the hashtag gained ground among women surgeons all over, and is running full steam ahead even today.

Plans for consolidating this expression of solidarity in the form of an exclusive website are afoot.

As with their engineering counterparts, women surgeons are trying to draw attention to gender-based discrimination they face in the field of surgery. Research shows that even in a developed nation like the UK, more than half the male and two thirds of female doctors did not think that surgery welcomed women.

In order to link the global with the local, NewsCrunch has previously featured women from India who actively participated in the #ILookLikeAnEngineer campaign on twitter.

Keeping track of these extraordinary endeavors, we present below ten women from India, at least those who have roots in India, who are part of the #ILookLikeASurgeon crew.
