Staff correspondent, September 8, 2015, NewsCrunch

A Delhi-based typing enthusiast Vinod Kumar Chaudhary set a new Guinness World Record for typing with nose.

Chaudhary took just 46.30 seconds to type the phrase: "Guinness world records have challenged me to type this sentence using my nose in the fastest time."

He beat the existing record narrowly with a second to spare.

Chaudhary, who is a professional typist, practiced four hours a day to break the record.

He beat the record in December 2014 in New Delhi. But Guinness verified his feat recently and declared him a record holder.

India's highest paid lawyer Ram Jethmalani's fees secrets have been authoritatively outed.

The 93-year-old lawyer charges Rs 25 lakh per appearance both at the Supreme and the  High Courts.

Legally India surveyed top lawyers in Delhi to find out how much seniors such as Ram Jethmalani charged to take up a case. Many senior lawyers, whose fees was outed, confirmed the findings.

It costs Rs 25 lakh to just to get Ram Jethmalani to read your case file and then he charges the same amount for each appearance.

In the most recent case he handled and won, Ram Jethmalani got Ansals off the hook in the Uphaar fire case. As the victims' parents lamented, he hogged the Supreme Court time, argued endlessly, found all means to drag the case for years until his clients came out without any additional prison time.

You may try to guess how much Ansals may have paid for his legal services though there is no exact count of his appearances in the case in the public domain.

Born on 14 September, 1923, in Pakistan, Ram Jethmalani built a successful practice in Karachi before fleeing to India during partition to start all over again. The Nanavati case of 1959, where he represented the prosecution, was his first big break.

He made his fortune in the 1960s by defending a string of smugglers, while also building his reputation as a 'smuggler’s lawyer'. There was no turning back after that, he joined politics, and rose to serve as Union Law Minister.

Off and on a BJP leader, Ram Jethmalani has remained a constant maverick and dissident.

Jethmalani says that the majority of the cases he takes up these days are pro bono - that is he fights them without charging a fee. He has also become very selective in accepting briefs and appears in only a few cases per week.

Other names in Legally India's big buck-lawyers  list: Fali Nariman, KK Venugopal, Gopal Subramanium, P Chidambaram, Harish Salve, AM Singhvi, CA Sundaram,  Salman Khurshid, KTS Tulsi, Kapil Sibal, Shanti Bhushan, Parag Tripathi and Dushyant Dave.

Trolls target Sonakishi Sinha after she asks if India is a free country
Staff correspondent, September 9, 2015, Newscrunch

Bollywood continued its campaign in support of Indians' right to eat what they wanted, with actress Sonakshi Sinha tweeting on Tuesday, protesting the ban against meat during the Jain festival Paryushan.

Without  naming meat ban, Sonakshi Sinha slammed the general tendency of the government to press the ban button frequently. The Maharashtra government had controversially banned beef in the state sometime ago.

"Welcome to BAN-istan... I meant india.. Stupid auto correct," her tweet read.

She also sent a follow-up tweet saying ignorance and negligence should be banned instead. Indians were worrying about meat when Assam was reeling under floods, she commented on the misplaced priorities of the country.

As to be expected, Sonakshi Sinha's  tweets red-flagged the trolls who descended upon her foul mouthed and swearing.

They were upset that she had dared to call India Bani-stan. They took it as an attack on their idea of India and also as a personal criticism of Prime Minister Modi and responded in full force.

They called Sonakshi Sinha fat, befitting daughter of Shatrughan Sinha, who is equally outspoken in BJP. They commented on her her movies, acting skills, raked up her old tweets and tore into them as well.

Older Bollywood actors try to avoid controversies by playing it safe. In a recent interview with Arnab Goswami Amitabh Bachchan claimed he did not even know that beef had been banned in Maharashtra.

But the new generation of Bollywood speaks its mind without bothering about the trolls. Before Sonakshi Sinha,  Sonam Kapoor had also come out strongly against ban on meat.

Petra Laszlo, a video journalist of Hungary's N1TV, was fired after she tripped and kicked fleeing Syrian refugees, making them fall.

A video shows that a middle-aged refugee man, who was carrying a child, stumbling down after tripping over the outstretched leg of Petra Laszlo, who was covering the event.

On Tuesday, hundreds of Syrian refugees started fleeing from a police registration point near Hungary's border with Serbia. It is not clear what triggered the confrontation with the  police.

As refugees ran in an open field, police and journalists pursued them.

A video footage released by German reporter Stephan Richter, shows a number of journalists filming the refugees. Petra Laszlo, who is seen recording with a camera,  intentionally trips a man as he flees while carrying a young child, causing both to fall to the ground.

The footage called an outrage on social media prompting N1TV to post a statement on its Facebook page, saying Petra Laszlo had been fired.

Hungary lies along a popular migrant route between Turkey and Germany. The refugees are popular neither with the Hungarian people or their government. Petra Laszlo  probably gave vent to her country's anti-refugee sentiment when she decided to kick the fleeing refugee man.

Or, she was probably just engineering an incident to get a better shot.

A Kannada film "141", which deals with cross-border lesbian love,  is set for release on September 11. Dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions would follow a week later.

The film director Bhavaji told India Today that the movie was ready in 2013 but struggled to get clearance from the censor board due to its theme.

After the Regional Censor Board refused to clear the movie saying it was against the Indian culture, Bhavaji had to approach a revising committee to secure the clearance.

He is unhappy that 141 was given an A certificate  even though it is completely free of any explicit content.

The fist-time director has roped in Tanya (Russian), Kavya and Farooq Khan  in lead roles.

141, which was shot secretly at locations around Karnataka, now reportedly faces threats from fringe groups.

A 11-minute long video from Scoopwhoop throws light on the illegal gun trade in North India especially Uttar Pradesh.

It speaks to the buyers, one of them a woman, and the people who make them.

Illegal gun buyers shown in the video seek security from wild animals and criminals. As one of them says thieves don’t touch your house if they know you keep a gun. But it also makes criminals more effective and menacing.

The illegal guns are available for just Rs 5,000, way cheaper than the legal weapons which cost lakhs. They may not work well all the time, may backfire or may kill only when used at close quarters.

But they are available easily – which means their number keeps growing.

Indiahas 40 million firearms, of which only 5.5 million are licensed. This means the country has the second-highest number of guns in the world, only after the US.

Jackie Shroff’s daughter Krishna has again underlined that she is a star kid with a difference by posting her nearly-topless pictures.

The photos show her covering her breasts with her hands, but were enough for the media to go gaga over them.

It is not the first time though, Krishna Shroff is making a statement through Instagram. A few months ago she had posted an intimate selfie with her Brazilian boy friend, Spenser Johnson, whom she likes to flaunt.

During the debut of her brother Tiger’s debut film Heropanthi, she was seen with Spenser Johnson, whom she introduced to everyone including pesky journalists.  This was in contrast with star kids, who go all hush-hush with their personal affairs.

A 1993 born, three years younger to Tiger, Krishna Shroff  is a girl with a mind of her own. She wants to make a mark  in the film industry but from behind the camera.

She is busy editing a documentary on transgenders, which has reportedly got even Aamir Khan excited. Though Aamir is a close family friend, Krishna Shroff insists on calling him “Sir”.

Kejriwal with Veerendra Heggade at Manjunatha Swamy temple in Dharmasthala

Staff correspondent, September 10, 2015, NewsCrunch

Arvind Kejriwal's visit to Dharmasthala shrine in Dakshina Kannada district has led to some political speculation in Karnataka.

In AAP's national design, the State figures prominently though the party has languished in Bangalore - it did not even try contest the just concluded BBMP polls.

Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Veerendra Heggade said the Delhi CM was there on invite. It is common for the religious organisations in Karnataka to invite political leaders for their events.

Kejriwal visited the Manjunatha Swamy temple observing all local practices that included removing his shirt. He took part in a convocation, inaugurated a women's hostel and made speeches.

AAP volunteers of the district had gathered to receive him at the airport.  He also attended a party function where he was to address the media, but backed off at the last minute.

If AAP wants to expand in Karnataka, Mangalore offers a fertile ground, besides Bangalore. The highly educated, wealthy and media saturated district has witnessed severe Hindu-Muslim polarisation.

The saffron camp is in a perpetual state of mobilisation, often making news for the wrong reasons. The Muslim groups are far from being push overs; equally organised, they offer  stiff resistance and indulge in their own version of moral policing.

AAP may like to offer a new style of politics that goes beyond communal camps and offer many disenchanted  youth an alternative.

But to take this path, AAP would have to eat into Congress votes, which will not be easy in Dakshina Kannada district. The Congress may not be in a visible street battle with BJP; but it is a well-entrenched force with its steadfast support base of minorities and backward castes.

In the last Assembly elections Congress routed BJP in seven constituencies and lost in only one. Among the seven Congress MLAs from the district there are two Muslims, a Christian and a Jain. And two of them U T Khader and Ramanath Rai are powerful state ministers.

Ola cabs has released a promo video featuring Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan.

Imagine hailing an Old cab and you see Narain Karthikeyan in the driver’s seat. He is also accompanied by Some Mathew, a self-anointed You Tube comedian.

The video was released two days ago on YouTube and has barely got 5,000 views. Here‘s why.

It’s a missed opportunity. Customers are drawn from the same demography and their responses are too scripted to be real. So, what you get is a staged encounter, where a self-conscious Narain Karthikeyan gently steers the car with an uncomfortable smile.

It would have perhaps worked if Narain Karthikeyan had floored the gas pedal and spun the car around to drain the blood off the customers face.

That’s what Red Bull would have done.

A complaint has been filed against a teacher, Somasundara Shastri, who was caught on video beating up a eight year-old boy, at Vital town of Mangalore.

Besides thrashing the boy, the Veda Pathshala teacher also made a casteist remark.

A mobile video shows Somasundara Shastri beating up the boy, who already had a fractured hand. He made the boy remove his shirt and slapped him repeatedly while scolding him in Tulu.

According to local TV channels, the immediate provocation was the boy coming late. But going by the teacher’s shouts, he seems to have been angry on few other issues as well.

The boy had also reportedly sat on a chair donated to the Vedic Pathshala by a local chieftain, who was a kshatriya.

Hitting the boy hard, Somasundara Shastri is heard asking the boy, if he was a Kshatriya or a Brahmin. His comment, which is open for interpretation has become, controversial.

Either he meant the chair was meant only for kshatriyas or implied that it was beneath the Brahmin boy’s caste to sit on the chair.

The 5-minute video was shot in May but went viral recently when the local channels picked it up.

The complaint against the teacher has been lodged by Dalit Seva Samiti leader Sheshappa.

The ultimate aphrodisiac, Lingam Swamy, as tweeted by
Rishi Kapoor seems to be fake

Staff correspondent, September 11, 2015, NewsCrunch

Veteran actor and Twitter's favourite rogue Rishi Kapoor has tweeted about a certain Lingam Swamy whose  private parts are worshipped by devotees seeking life long sex.

The photo shows a devotee, who has stooped down uncomfortably close to Lingam Swamy's private parts, to seek his blessings.

Though Rishi Kapoor called the photo "ridiculous" suggesting that he opposed the blind devotion, his tweet opens up a new treatment venue for believers struggling with sex-related problems.

In a country, where exotic treatments find many takers, it would not be a surprise if Rishi Kapoor's tweet prompts many to go in search of Lingam Swamy. If they do, they are likely to be disappointed.

The photo is genuine but Rishi Kapoor's caption seems to have come from his imagination.

The sadhu in the photo is obviously a recluse Naga sadhu, who has come down from his Himalayan Cave during Kumbh Mela.

Naga sadhus  do bless devotees, but these are touch and go affairs. They do not build a following nor offer specific cures. They usually do not disclose their names and chances of a repeat meeting with a Naga sadhu are remote.

Naga sadhus live in akharas and derive their names from them - Shri Panchadashanam Juna Akhara , Shri Panchayati Mahanirwani Akhara, Shri Taponidhi Niranjani Akhara, Shri Taponidhi Anand Akhara, Shri Panchayati Atal Akhara, Shri Panchadashnam Awahan Akhara, Shri Pancha Agni Akhara and Shri Panchayati Akhara.

There is no akhara, which can lead to a name like Lingam Swami, which has a Bollywood ring to it.

So, why Rishi Kapoor cook up a caption to send devotees on a false hunt?  He has been tweeting against Radhe maa, meat ban, protesting against the excessive religious fervour the country seems to be suffering from.

What better way to make this point than tweeting about Lingam Swamy, who private parts can be worshipped to seek eternal sex life.

The Modi government, which is struggling to take Robert Vadra off the no-frisk list at airports, may extend the controversial exemption to Baba Ramdev and Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh as well.

Both the religious leaders have requested the government to add them to the list of VIPs, who are exempt from frisking at airports. Ramdev wants to save time, while Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has security concerns.

Junior Aviation Minister Mahesh Sharma told The Telegraph that government was exploring if the demand for "fast passage" through airports, made by these two "saints"could be met.

Both Ramdev and Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh have considerable clout at the BJP dispensation.

While Ramdev is part of the saffron establishment,  Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's Dera Sacha Soudha  has sizable following in Haryana and Punjab. In the last Assembly election, he had asked his followers to vote for BJP in Haryana.

The Telegraph also quoted an aviation risk expert, who said entertaining no-frisk proposals was a bad idea.

You can take a man out of his village, but you cannot take the village out of him.

The saying is especially true when it comes to Bollywood actor Nawazuddi Siddiqui, who spent a week recently at his village Budhana in UP growing vegetables.

The new Bollywood sensation reportedly visits his village twice a year and spends time doing what he did before, farming.

Nawazuddi Siddiqui, who comes from a humble background, told Mumbai Mirror that he did farming till he was 22. He says that when he goes back to his village, he works along with other farmers, who are busy with their chores.

He does not seem to get any star treatment from them.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui famously struggled for long years in poverty before breaking into big time.

Despite his phenomenal success, he says he is uncomfortable in designer clothes and the glamour that surrounds him now.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui says his success still surprises him. When fans run behind him, his first instinct is to think that they are chasing someone else.

Why no ban on fish? Dinesh Jain a BJP corporator
from Mira-Bhayander explains

Staff correspondent, September 11, 2015, NewsCrunch

Defending the meat ban for four days during Jain festival Paryushan, the Maharashtra government told the Mumbai High Court that the prohibition did not extend to fish.

It said fish was exempted as they die after taken out of water; there is no violence as they arrive to the market dead.

While the logic may sound strange, the government lawyer just repeated that the Jain community has been saying.

In an interview with Rediff, Dinesh Jain a BJP corporator from Mira-Bhayander had said three days ago that it was ok to sell fish during Paryushan.

“You know that when fish is taken out from the sea it is dead,” said Dinesh Jain.

In contrast, he said, “keeping meat in shops and cutting it was like taking a life.”

It was Dinesh Jain, who had moved the original proposal to ban the sale of meat and shut abattoirs, during the Jain festival.

The exemption on fish is also driven by practical considerations. Jain leaders fear that asking for a ban on fish would lead to a confrontation with Kolis, the fishermen community, who are supported by MNS.

“Some want to instigate a fight between the two communities (the Jains and Kolis). You read our proposal for the ban. It clearly states nothing about fish,” said Dinesh Jain.

“We (have) conveyed to them (the MNS) that we never wanted a ban on fish,” he added.

ISIS recruiter Afsha Jabeen, who was known by her other aliases Ayesha and Nicky Joseph so far, is a big catch for Indian intelligence.

Her interrogation will help them piece together the exact picture on the Indians under the sway of ISIS.

Among the Indians, who have joined ISIS, a large number are the expats, especially those went abroad to work especially to West Asia. It was where Afsha Jabeen was active ensnaring them with a false identity.

Afsha Jabeen had gone to Abu Dhabi as a child and completed her schooling there. PTI reports that she came to Indiaand graduated from Shadan college in Hyderabadand later married Devender Kumar alias Mustafa.

Afsha Jabeen’s  unravelling began in October last year when she came under the scanner of FBI. The US agency was trailing Salman Mohiuddin, an Indian from Hyderabad, who had gone to a university in Texasfor a master’s degree.

He had stayed back to work as a salesman, but his increasing radicalisation brought him to the notice of FBI.

Salman Mohiuddin had met Dubai-based Afsha Jabeen online, who initiated him into ISIS propaganda. Under her influence he spent a lot of time on ISIS websites and even started running a support group on Facebook, which reached 2,000 members.

In October last year, US refused to extend his visa and sent him home, but not before tipping off the Indian agencies.

Salman Mohiuddin continued pro-ISIS activities in Hyderabadspreading propaganda and influencing others till he was arrested in January when he was trying to fly to Dubai. His  contact Afsha Jabeen had promised him a passage to Syria.

The relationship between Salman Mohiuddin and Afsha Jabeen was not clear. Reports described her variously as his wife, girlfriend and an acquaintance.

Afsha Jabeen posed as British Muslim, whose husband was a cardiologist in Dubai.

After Salman Mohiuddin’s arrest, Afsha Jabeen fell off the radar till she was deported by UAE on Friday.

More than 100 devotees were killed at Mecca's Grand Mosque after a massive construction crane collapsed on Friday evening. Over 200 have been injured and the toll is likely to rise.

Islam's holiest site Grand Mosque, holds Kaaba,  a cuboid building which is considered the House of God, at its center.

Mecca has been experiencing bad weather and the crane collapse has been blamed on strong winds and heavy rains, though only a detailed probe can establish the factors that led to the accident.

The crane fell on the Al-Tawaf bridge, the walkway that surrounds the holy Kaaba. Had the  Al-Tawaf bridge not broken the crane's fall, the toll would have been much higher, say eye witnesses.

An University of Delaware researcher has developed sophisticated microphones to show that mice break into complex mating songs when they want to have sex.

It was known that male mice initiated these songs to attract females. But neuroscientist Joshua Neunuebel has now found that female mice respond in kind, sing back to perform a duet.

Unfortunately, these melodies register in a pitch far beyond the reach of human ears.

The highest range the human ear can detect is about 20 kilohertz. The high-pitched voice of a mouse registers at about 35 to 125 kilohertz.

It takes special microphones to pick that up, which have been developed by Neunuebel and his collaborators to collect all sorts of mouse sounds and related data.

The video report below shows mice breaking into songs. But the video is a little dated, so it does not capture the sound, but you can watch them crooning nevertheless.
