Gowri Ramesh, July 22, 2015, Bangalore, NewsCrunch

Facebook has unpublished a hugely popular pro-Kannada page Samanya Kannadiga (Ordinary Kannadiga)  for violating its terms of use.

Samanya Kannadiga had over 20,000 members and was active in taking on issues which were seen as offensive to kannadigas.

Most recently Samanya Kannadiga had campaigned against Chirag Mittal, a sales manager at Casa Grande, a Chennai based real estate developer.

Chirag Mittal had made a Facebook post making fun of Kannadigas. He had said that people were coming from outside to rule over local people while adding that five Kannadigas were working under him.

The post was picked by Samanya Kannadiga and shared widely, which led to angry reactions by fellow kannadigas.

Bangalore Mirror reported that though Chirag Mittal apologised, the anger and hate calls continued; concerned that their brand was taking a hit, Casa Grande terminated Chirag Mittal.

A day after that Facebook acted on a complaint that Samanya Kannadiga had violated its terms of use and axed its page as well.

Facebook rules prohibit any page from running campaigns against individuals or groups.

A new Lesbian magazine Straight! took a dig at German Chancellor Angela Merkel by featuring an actor, who looks her, in a racy advertisement.

The advertisement is seen as a comment against Angela Merkel, who remains opposed to gay marriages in Germany.

Straight! tweeted about the ad, along with a still from the video, which showed two women, including actor-Angela Merkel in close embrace. The tweet read: "Everyone in Europe hates Merkel? Apart from this woman..."

The video was picked by major German media, including Bild, and went viral.

It shows a young woman getting out of her bed and giving a kiss to actor-Angela Merkel.

Angela Merkel, a devout Christian, has been married twice. Though under pressure from civil rights activists, she has stuck to her stand that a marriage is a union of a man and a woman.

A series of photos taken at Morbi, Gujarat, which reportedly captured a snake flying have gone viral.

Many reports have identified the mid air spectacle as a “flying snake”.

Even if it can be assumed that the photos are authentic, we can safely rule out that what we are seeing is a flying snake.

Chrysopelea, or flying snakes have evolved to climb trees and launch themselves as projectiles. As the video below shows they can angle their long body to glide down even choosing a flight path.

They are common in South-east Asia and in the Indian sub-continent at Sri Lanka, Western Ghats, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal and North-east states.

Though Gujarat is not part of their habitat, flying snakes are known to migrate. Sri Lankan snakes have been sighted as far as Andhra Pradesh's Seshachalam forests

But there is no record of any snake being sighted in Gujaratso far. Also the height at which the snake is flying in the photos rules out a Chrysopelea specimen.

What seems to have happened is - a snake picked by a hawk or any other predator bird must have escaped the claws and fallen off, creating the sensational spectacle.

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi made a splash at Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu by making a spirited speech in pouring rain.

He was recalling the contributions of Tamil Nadu leader Kamraj at a rally when the skies opened up.

When the sizeable crowd refused to budge, Rahul Gandhi carried on spiritedly. The crowd broke into a roar when he refused an umbrella, which was brought in by an aide.

Seeing that the interpreter was struggling to hear him in the pouring rain, Rahul Gandhi even moved closer to him to use the same mike.

Besides bringing a human touch to the rally, Rahul Gandhi also underlined Kamraj’s contribution to the strengthening of democracy in the country.

The more it poured, the more the crowd seemed to love the Rahul show.

A simmering land dispute erupted in Bijnor, UP, on Wednesday when a tractor driven by a pistol-carrying female goon ran over a group of Christian women trying to defend the Church land.

The clash, which was captured on camera, has the shocking visual of the tractor driver, Mamata Agarwal, running over a young woman, who was trying to get the vehicle off the Church land.

The video shows the unidentified woman emerging from underneath after the tractor passes over her; she was lucky to have gone between the two wheels.  She was injured, though not grievously and  is recovering at a local hospital.

The drama unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when Mamata Agarwal, from a local influential family. started a tractor tucking a pistol under her saree fold at waist. She drove it into a large plot of land owned by a 100-year-old Church and started running over the crops.

A group of Christian women, who were anticipating the attack, tried to stall her by blocking her way and throwing sticks at her. It was then the unidentified woman came under the wheels of the tractor.

But the brave women managed to stop the tractor, disarm Mamata and give her a few slaps, when the police arrived.

Mamata is said to be the wife of a local thug Rajkamal Agarwal.

The local land mafia is reportedly eyeing the 17-acre of plot owned by the church, which  is reportedly worth between 300 to 400 crores. The 50 odd Christian families affiliated to the Church have been putting up a strong resistance.

Local residents say the land mafia had tried to fabricate the documents claiming ownership, which was successfully contested in the local courts by the Christian community.

On a change of tactic, the land mafia tried sending an armed woman on a tractor to intimidate the Christian families, who had a ready response, and let their women counter the attack, besides capturing the episode on a video.

Local residents blame the police for playing a partisan role and favouring the land mafia. The video below shows a policeman trying to record the video of protesting Christian women and ignoring Mamata Agarwal, who was caught with a pistol.

The police also arrived late, much after the confrontation had concluded, though the entire drama had unfolded in front  of the local District Magistrate's residence, which always has a police presence.

But after the incident came out in the media, Bijnor police booked Mamata under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt).

NDTV provided a different account of the incident suggesting Mamata had acted on her own. It said Mamata came from a rich business family, which had no inkling of her actions.

A month after listing him among criminals, Google ranks Modi  among Stupid PMs

Sujay Ghosh, July 24, 2015, New Delhi, NewsCrunch

A search for the keywords "Most Stupid Prime Ministers" on search engines such as Google and Bing alarmingly throws up Indian premier Narendra Modi prominently.

The search string also fetches Thailand's Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada and Yingluck  Shinawatra, Thailand’s first woman prime minister in the results.

But it is Modi's photo, which appears maximum number of times.

On Google, Modi appeared thrice among top individual 10 images in response to the search query, Most Stupid Prime Ministers.

On Bing, Modi appeared four times among top individual 10 images for the same search query.

The results are very upsetting for Modi supporters, more so, as Google had listed him among top 10 criminals barely a month ago.

A search for the keyword 'Top 10 Indian criminals' had revealed Modi in the company of Dawood Ibrahim, Hafiz Saeed, Sanjay Dut and Osama Bin Laden.

The results caused a furor forcing Google to issue an apology to the Prime Minister, along with a clarification.

It said the search query was pulling together multiple news articles, which had both Modi's images and his comments on politicians with criminal background. As the words "Modi" and "Crime" appeared in close proximity, he was appearing in the list of top 10 criminals of India, Google said.

While "apologising for the confusion or misunderstanding the results had caused," Google had promised to improve its algorithms to prevent unexpected results like this.

But it seems to have not delivered on its promise and its search results again end up offending Modi.

The new controversy also makes Google's earlier explanation doubtful. There are no articles, in which the words Modi and stupid appear in close proximity, in the results.

Yet, Modi is listed as the most stupid Prime Minister of the world.

Uneasy conscience: RAW officer B Raman, who brought back Yakub Memon from Nepal, opposed his death sentence

B Raman wrote the article in 2007 after Yakub Memon was sentenced to death, and sent it to Sheela Bhatt of Rediff. He, however, changed his mind decided against publishing it.
B Raman said hanging of Yakub Memon would be a blot on th record of Indian security agencies
Sujay Ghosh, July 24, 2015, New Delhi, NewsCrunch

Rediff has posthumously published a sensational article written by former head of RAW's Pakistan Desk,  B Raman, the man who brought  back Yakub Memon to India.

B Raman wrote the article in 2007 after Yakub Memon was sentenced to death, and sent it to Sheela Bhatt of Rediff. He, however, changed his mind decided against publishing it.

B Raman believed that Yakub Memon was involved in the 1993 blasts; yet he was aghast when the younger Memon was sentenced to death. He even accused the security agencies and the prosecutor of holding back evidence, which would have made the court go soft on Yakub Memon .

The key question in Yakub Memon's case is did he return to India on his own or was he arrested at Old Delhi Railway station by the police. Even the court, which sentenced him to death, ridiculed the police claim that they had found him at the Railway station.

As B Raman writes, Yakub Memon was uncomfortable with the ISI and went to Nepal to consult a lawyer to discuss his plan of returning to India. The lawyer advised him to go back to Pakistan.

But the Nepal police picked up Yakub Memon on suspicion and drove him to the Indian border, from where he was flown to Delhi by RAW and was formally arrested.

B Raman is silent on the exact circumstances of Yakub Memon's arrest by the Nepal police; Yakub Memon and his lawyers have claimed that he intentionally drew the attention of the Nepal police at the Kathmandu airport by spilling the content of a bag, which had several fake passports. They also claim Yakub Memon came to India with a suitcase full of evidence against ISI when he returned.

Raman declines to corroborate or refute these claims, but is highly appreciative of Yakub Memon's cooperation after arrest. Getting him back was an intelligence coup and he played a useful role in building up India's case against Pakistan.

B Raman is also silent if Indian security agencies made any promise to Yakub Memon. But Sheela Bhatt, who had been interacting with B Raman suggests that there were assurances. As she writes while introducing Raman's article:

The promise given by serving officers who represent a sovereign State is not negotiable. The system should uphold what is promised by representatives of the sovereign State.

Raman says Indian security agencies did spectacular work in probing the Mumbai blasts. He says they could have distinguished themselves better if they had told the court, the truth about Yakub Memon and opposed his death penalty.

Ironically, that is a charge B Raman himself is guilty of. He did go close to making his stand public, but backed off fearing that his revelation would make an adverse impact on the case.

While Yakub Memon case is a blot on the record of the Indian security agencies, it is not hard to imagine that B Raman himself died in 2013 with an uneasy conscience.

A startled horse sped away shaking off a Sikh groom at his wedding ceremony at Surrey, UK, recently.

The video shows the horse responding with discomfort as the groom mounts her. She starts spinning and the horse trainer Zsa Zsa Stiasny tries to calm down the animal.

But the animal runs away and the video captures the groom falling off the saddle.

The unidentified groom was hurt but not badly and is said to be recovering well.

Zsa Zsa Stiasny works for a firm called Equutrails, which rents horses for South  Asian weddings.

Zsa Zsa Stiasny said it was for the first time her horses had been involved in an incident like this. She blamed the groom for not removing his shoes and sword before mounting the horse. They must have poked the horse, causing it to panic, she suggested.

Many experts also said the groom mounted the horse from the right side which was against the norm, triggering discomfort in the animal.

Mid Day editor Sachin Kalbag
slams Logical Indian, Twitter pic

Staff, July 25, 2015, NewsCrunch

Mid Day editor Sachin Kalbag threatened to send a legal notice to Logical Indian after it copied a story without permission.

He was upset that Logical Indian had re-published a Mid Day story on a Mumbai diner refusing to pay service charges.

The hugely popular Logical Indian, aggregates feel-good stories from different publications, many a time copying large chunks of it. It, however, credits the original source and gives a hyperlink to them.

This falls short of the standard acknowledgement and crediting norms followed by the media and as Sachin Kalbag pointed out giving a link saying “Via” to indicate the original source was not enough.

He recalled that he had earlier cautioned Logical Indian against using Mid Day content and had forced them to acknowledge a photograph.

Sachin Kalbag’s  series of tweets on the subject seems to have made an impact. All Logical Indian photos now come with a disclaimer and email id; original copyright holders can send a mail and have their photos taken down. The “Via” link also seems to have vanished.

The court had had earlier granted bail to Sreesanth, and two other cricketers Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan saying there was not adequate evidence against them.

Sreesanth, 32, who is known to be an emotional person broke down at the court on hearing the verdict.

Later speaking to the media, he said, he would start his training to return to the selection process again. His movie, TV engagements would take back seat, as Cricket comes first, Sreesanth said.

He described his most touching experience as being able to go back to the cricket stadium and start practicing again. He recalled that after the scandal, he was banned from using the stadia, the worst thing that can fall upon a cricketer.

He remembered his new-born daughter, his wife and the family, which stood by him, during the trial.

Explaining why he broke down, he said, while the trial was on he would often ask why was he being subject to the suffering. Sreesanth said he could not control the tears when the verdict was delivered.

Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, which shows the hunt for the dreaded terrorist Osama sets a bench mark for realism, which Bollywood consistently fails to meet, and the just released trailer of Phantom explains why.

To make it clear there is nothing realistic intended about Phantom; it is a fantasy drama which gives voice to a wild desire of many Indians – to hunt terrorists, who are in Pakistan, the way Americans gunned down Osama.

The filmmakers Kabir Khan and Sajid Nadiadwala, and crime author Hussain Zaidi, did their best to give a touch of realism to Phantom. They shot parts of the movie, in the rife-torn Beirut, and many actors learnt Kurdish and Arabic for their roles.

But the film starts smelling like a plastic rose the moment Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaiff step in and the plot takes a familiar turn.

Saif Ali Khan is a mad agent sent by RAW to get Pakistani terrorists and Katrina Kaiff plays supporting role with guns. Saif Ali Khan is more convincing when he cracks a joke than when he picks up a gun. Katrina Kaiff is better off as an arm candy than a fighter woman.

A sorry tale of money and effort failing to meet expectations.

Kabir Khan, who tried to bring Indians and Pakistanis together in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, seems to be bent on separating them again.

Havaldar Mohammed Razzaq of the Dras brigade has built a fan-following for himself with his impressive homage to the martyrs at the Kargil war memorial, Drass.

A few videos, though a little dated, which show Havaldar Mohammed Razzaq speaking to groups of citizens, recalling the sacrifices of the  fallen Indian heroes, are being shared on the Kargil anniversary.

They show people listening in rapt attention to the matter-of-fact but a powerful speech by Havaldar Mohammed Razzaq.

As the Indian flags flutter to the wind, Havaldar Mohammed Razzaq stands erect in uniform, looking martial in his imperial mustache. Keeping his hands behind, raising them only occasionally to point at the direction of the battle fields, he begins his recap of the battle for the Kargill hills, which form the line of control between India and Pakistan.

The troops of both the countries would withdraw from the hills, which became very cold and inhospitable in winter. The periodic movement of the troops was considered so important, it was even sanctioned by the Shimla agreement.

But in the winter of 1998, Pakistani troops occupied the Kargil heights, to secure a strategic advantage over Indians. From their vantage positions, they could fire at vehicles plying on National Highway One.

In the summer of 1999, Indian troops began Operation Vijay to evict the Pakistanis. Moving up the hills, one by one, braving Pakistani fire, engaging the enemy in hand-to-hand and close gunfire combat, Indian Army  won back all the hills.

Havaldar Mohammed Razzaq recalls the battle for each hill, listing the officers, JCOs and soldiers, who gave up their lives.

A generation has passed since the battle for Kargil hills were fought. Many today seem to have almost forgotten the soldiers, who shed their blood to secure the country's borders.

These two videos, made on different occasions, but with similar content, has Havaldar Mohammed Razzaq' giving them a timely reminder.

India is observing the 16th Kargil anniversary this year.

Senior IAS officer Surya Pratap Singh, who is due to retire this December is so fed up with Uttar Pradesh, he wants to exit four months early.

He says it has become impossible to work with any honesty in the Akhilesh Singh Yadav Government.

He has written a long letter to the Chief Secretary asking it to be treated as a request for voluntary retirement.

According to The Telegraph, Surya Pratap Singh's letter comments that IAS officers, who did not fulfill the illegitimate demands of even petty local-level leaders, got either transferred or suspended.

"Every week 24 IAS and IPS officers get transferred in Uttar Pradesh," Surya Pratap Singh claimed.

Surya Pratap Singh's voluntary retirement letter may look a bit self-serving as it comes just four months before his superannuation.

But he has been transferred six times in the past year after he cracked down on mass copying.

A 1982 batch officer, Surya Pratap Singh, is now principal secretary in the bureau of public enterprises - a punishment posting.

Salman Khan faces boycott threats after he opposes Yakub Memon's death sentence .

Staff Correspondent, July 26, 2015

Bollywood star Salman Khan walked into a huge controversy on Sunday after he posted a series of tweets protesting the scheduled hanging of Yakub Memon.

In a gist, Salman Khan said India was hanging the wrong brother, Yakub Khan, while the real guilty was Tiger Memon.

Ridiculing Tiger Memon as a cat, Salman Khan lamented that India could not catch even that small animal.

Salman Khan's tweets flared up an instant response in India as many tweeple went into attack mode slamming his support to a convicted terrorist. Some of them recalled Salman Khan's own difficult encounters with the law and said he was supporting a fellow criminal.

A few of them threatened to boycott Salman Khan movies; one person said  he was cancelling his Sunday plan to watch Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman Khan's latest movie, which has been received on both sides of the border as a message of peace.

Celebrities in India refrain commenting on controversial issues. A few weeks ago Amitabh Bachchan had feigned ignorance that Maharashtra had banned beef in an interview with Arnab Goswami.  Amitabh Bachchan said celebrities avoided controversy as they were vulnerable to attacks.

Salman Khan said he had been thinking of tweeting about Yakub Memon for the past three days but was worried about the backlash. He says he went ahead and made his opinion public as it affected a family.

Salman Khan tweets became controversial in Pakistan as well. In one tweet,  he appealed to PM Sharif to return Tiger Memon to India, which many took as an anti-Pakistan stand in that country.

Yakub Memon's death sentence has been a controversy as many believe  that he came back on his own and cooperated with Indian agencies, and hence requires leniency.  The late RAW officer, B Raman, who brought back Yakub Memon to India, has written that  hanging Yakub Memon would be a travesty of justice.

Kerala nun Sister Seba also known as Remya George has hit out at CBSE for imposing dress code that violated he minority rights sanctioned by the Indian Constitution.

Sathya Das, the principal of Jawahar Central School at Thiruvananthapuram stopped her from writing the pre-medical entrance exam after she refused  to remove her headgear and cross, as required by the CBSE dress code.

In a Malayalam interview with Anwesham India, Sister Seba, who is a Catholic, pointed out that India was a democracy, which gave people the freedom to follow  their religious practices and beliefs.

Imposing a dress code without considering the sensitivities of the minorities was a violation of Indian constitution, minority rights and human rights as well, she pointed out.

To prevent the use of electronic devices to cheat during the pre-medical AIPMT exam, CBSE had banned students from bringing accessories such as belts, cap and scarf.  The Supreme Court had upheld the dress code on Friday leaving students no choice but to follow it.

In the interview, Sister Seba also recalls her confrontation with Sathya Das when she  went to write the exam.

She says she entered the school and stood in the queue to be frisked. It was then the principal approached her and told her about the dress code.

Sister Seba had gone to the examination centre with another nun. The principal suggested that she hand over her headscarf and the cross to her while she wrote the exam.

Declining to remove her articles of faith, Sister Seba spoke to her superiors and decided to skip the exam.

She said head gears are important or nuns, which are removed only when they go to bed.

Sathya Das, who is also a Christian, said Sister Seba refused to cooperate and decided not to write the exam after speaking to her superiors.

CBSE dress code drew angry reactions from Muslims and Sikhs in different parts of the country. Five Sikh students were told to remove their accessories. At least one Muslim girl in UP refused to write the exam after declining to remove her scarf.

CBSE dress code has upset minority groups, which say in the name of checking exam malpractice, religious symbols are being targeted.

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh responded to his Pakistani counterpart Shoaib Malik's challenge and gave a perfect demonstration of  Michale Jackson's moonwalk on late Saturday.

A video released by Yuvraj Singh shows him breaking into a short Michael Jackson jig; he moonwalks a few times  and freezes holding his crotch.

He also tweeted a comment, along with the video, telling Shoaib Malik: This is how it is done. I am always in the maidaan.

It all started last week when Indian tennis star Sania Mirza went to Sri Lanka to join her husband Shoaib Malik for Eid celebrations. As Pakistan had just won an ODI against Lanka, she joined the team in enacting a dubsmash dance video.

After the video went viral, especially in Pakistan, Yuvraj Singh, a  close friend of Sania Mirza, tweeted a comment saying Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik were great athletes but terrible dancers. Sania Mirza retorted immediately calling Yuvraj Singh motu and asking him to show his moves.

But after he failed to respond, on July 20, Shoaib Malik tweeted challenging Yuvraj Singh: come and play in the maidaan, he tweeted.

Saturday's moonwalk video was a response to that. Though it brings out the Punjabi flamboyance, Yuvraj Singh is well-known for, he has taken care not to tag Sania Mirza to his tweet - as many may find him holding his crotch offensive. That is respect for women, gentlemen, Yuvraj Singh style.

A popular celebrity guest in TV shows, Yuvraj Singh is known to hit the dance floor without any qualms. Bollywood choreographer and director Farah Khan had once commented that she was really impressed  with Yuvraj Singh's dance moves.
