A touching video of villagers hooting and welcoming the flooding of  Kalavapalli river in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh has gone viral globally.

The video originating in a Facebook page and distributed by the likes of The Guardian has clocked millions of views on different platforms.

The video shows a large group of villagers, spread over the dry river bed, shouting in joy as the water begins to flow in. The Kalavapalli river had reportedly gone dry two decades ago.

In large parts of South India, tanks and smaller streams  have gone dry due to over exploitation of water. For the affected villagers, loss of water meant destruction of a lifestyle and forced migration to nearby cities in search of manual labour.

Many massive projects are now being undertaken to lift water from major rivers over large distances through canals and pipes to fill up tanks and rivulets, though largely for drinking purposes.

It is not clear when the Kalavapalli river video was taken and the source of its new water.

Interestingly, Ananatpur - where Kalavapalli river is located - is one of the beneficiary districts of the Andhra Pradesh project that diverts surplus Godavari water to Krishna largely to quench the thirst of the parch dry Rayalseema region.

Kurnool, Anantapur, Chittoor and Cuddapah, which constitute  Rayalseema, have suffered from parched fields and lack of drinking water.

On September 16, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu flagged off the project by switching on a pump at Pattiseema to commission the just built 54-kilometre canal linking Godavari to Polavaram Right Canal, which will carry water to Krishna.

The Kalavapalli river video was uploaded on September 8, nearly a week ahead of the formal flag-off of the Godavari-Krishna project.

Till we get confirmation from the field, we can only guess that the filling up of Kalavapalli river could have been a possible dry run by the officials to ready the project for formal inauguration.

The video footage shows two men, followed by police, accosting Chand Nawab and roughing him up. One of them slaps as Chand Nawab stands his ground.

92 News identified both assaulters as policemen in civil dress as the video which showed the unwarranted police action went viral. Chand Nawab also started trending on Twitter.

Ironically, a video which had captured Chand Nawab struggling to report amidst Eid rush at Karachi Cantonment Station had gone viral a few years ago.

Nawaz Siddiqui’s opening scene in Bajrangi Bhaijaan was completely based on that video – from the dialogues to the visuals -- and had made Chand Nawab famous on this side of the Indo-Pak order as well.

PM Modi’s visit Silicon Valley from September 25 to 27 is set to face multiple protests from several groups opposed to him.

The protests would be spearheaded by Alliancefor Justice and Accountability, the Sikh for Justice and, also possibly, by a few Patel organisations of the Kaduwas sect.

The highpoint of the opposition to Modi would be a gathering of 5,000 protesters on September 27 at the SAP Centre in San Jose, where he is scheduled to address the Indian-American community.

The Telegraph reports that the USpolice has permitted the protesters to assemble at a designated area outside the SAP Centre.

Opposition to Modi has swelled as the US West Coast, a liberal domain, hosts two universities at Berkeley and Stanford, which may contribute a  large number of protesters.

A few weeks ago over 100 noted USacademics had written to Silicon Valley firms on the Modi government’s moves to restrict digital freedom in India.

The Telegraph said the Overseas Friends of the BJP is working overtime to mobilise Modi supporters and outnumber his opposition.

A video, which shows a hijra-woman beating up a “fake” transgender, has gone viral.

The video was uploaded on YouTube on Tuesday by the Logical Indian and has been viewed by about 50,000 people. It was possibly shot in Lucknow.

It shows a hijra-woman stripping and thrashing a person, who identifies himself as Najma.  Alleging that Najma was a man, the unidentified hijra-woman accuses him of faking his identity.

She alleges that he is trying to take the easy way out by begging instead of working for a living. Adding that he was bringing a bad name for transgenders, the hijra-woman threatens to castrate Najma.

There have been documented cases of men faking as transgenders.

Four years ago in Bangaloretwo NGOs, Sangama and Mangalamukhis' Association, had stated that men were resorting to begging at traffic signals in the guise of transgenders.

They had urged the then police commissioner Shankar Bidari to take action on the men, who were depriving the livelihood of transgenders.

Offering a different take on the video, the News Minute quoted an expert, who said it was the right of the individual to state if he was a transgender.

The gender status of a man or a woman cannot be ascertained on the basis of the bodily organs they possess, the expert said.

JNU after FTII – Swamy in contention for crucial post

September 23, 2015, NewsCrunch

Subramanian Swamy confirmed media reports on Wednesday that the Modi Government was planning to shortlist his name for the post of JNU VC.

He tweeted saying there had been no formal offer, and said, he would consider the post only if his pre-conditions were met.

However, he did not specify what his preconditions were.

PTIhad reported on Wednesday evening that HRD Minister Smriti Irani had sounded out Subramanian Swamy about the job, which will fall vacant soon. The term of the current VC S K Sopory is set to retire in January next year.

The HRD Ministry would have to send three name to the President, as suggested by a search committee. The President would then pick the new VC.

The news that the Government was considering a radical right-winger like Swamy to head JNU, the left bastion of the country spread like wild fire.

While many of Swamy’s fans saw it as too small a post for him, some saw it as an opportunity to "clean up" JNU of its leftist elements.

Interestingly, the government’s move on JNU comes on the heels of FTII controversy, where a group of agitating students have successfully stalled the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as chairman.

Twitter witnessed a punch and a series of massive counter punches between Bollywood personalities Rishi Kapoor and Kamaal R Khan on Thursday morning.

The personal attack was not likely to go unnoticed and KRK was hitting back within two hours.

In a series of tweets, he called Rishi Kapoor a side actor and a drunkard, who finished a litre of alcohol every night and took out his frustration on others.

He also went after Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbir Kapoor, calling him Jimmy Sherill of Bollywood, a reference another good looking actor, who had failed despite his stunning good looks.

Viciously, he also alleged that Rishi Kapoor had made his son compromise with a well known Bollywood director

Yakuza gangs, which run Japan's underworld, form one of the most secretive crime syndicates of the world.

Belgian photographer Anton Kusters spent two years filming a prominent Yakuza family. He managed to get access after reaching out to them for ten months. When he spoke to the Yakuza God Father with his request, the senior in the middle in the picture above, the amused  man agreed.

Over time, they accepted Anton Kusters so much that they called him to film when a senior member died, giving him access to a rarely seen gathering of the Japanese underworld.

So, what did Anton Kusters find out? These are no blood thirsty teenage gangs. They rely more on hierarchy, pressure and control than actual violence to run their criminal enterprise.

But do not underestimate the Yakuza proclivity for the gore. As Anton Kusters' photos show, when a Yakuza member makes a mistake and says sorry, he is expected to cut off his fingers in regret.

Before JNU, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, was involved in another controversy with IIT-Delhi and it took no less than a Rajat Gupta to challenge him successfully.

The events detailed by Sandipan Deb's Book Fallen Angel (Rupa, 2013), however, occurred in 1971 during Rajat Gupta's final year in the mechanical engineering department.

Rajat Gupta was a star student, who took part in 17 plays during his stay, headed students union and was universally popular. Among the toppers of the batch, he was also a rare IITian, who had a girl friend, whom he went on to marry.

In his final year, Subramanian Swamy joined IIT Delhi to teach economics.

The book says Swamy started radicalising the campus with his Hindutva ideology as soon he stepped in, and managed to get support of a section of students as well as class four employees.

An RSS shaka came up on IIT-Delhi campus and Swamy-affiliated students started talking about banning jeans and promoting an Indian dress code.

A group of Hindutva supporters even warned students from playing rock and roll in public, and asked them to switch over to Indian classical music.

More dangerously, the book says, Swamy started mobilising students and staff against the IIT-Delhi director Dr Dogra - and this effectively divided the campus.

This is when Rajat Gupta decided to step in to oppose what Swamy was doing. He rallied his friends to keep politics out of the institution and started a counter-campaign, which he personally led.

His contemporaries remember Rajat Gupta courageously confronting militant students and saying: "If you burn down the  buildings we will call fire engines and build another."

Dr Dogra was emboldened by the support he was getting and banned RSS shaka from the campus, which calmed down after that.

When Rajat Gupta applied for Harvard, he was given a recommendation letter, by a grateful Dr Dogra.

"Here is a student, who saved our campus," the letter said.

While a repeat of Delhi IIT's experience would have been alarming for JNU, it never ran the risk of Swamy  taking over as its VC. Media reports say at 76, Swamy is beyond the 65 years, which is the age limit for the post.

A letter written by PM Modi’s principal secretary Nripendra Misra has said the surface transport ministry under Nitin Gadkari has done better than Railways under the much fancied Suresh Prabhu.

The letter, which has been interpreted as the view of the prime Minister, slams Prabhu for "less than satisfactory performance" of his ministry, reports The Telegraph.

The passenger and freight traffic has dropped and the Railways’ utilisation of the record Rs 40,000 crore budgetary support has been unimpressive.

It is also struggling to give wings to Modi’s pet high-speed rail project.

In contrast, Nitin Gadkari – usually in news for wrong reasons - is believed to have done a better job.

Under him, Surface Transport Ministry has been building 3 km of road every day and has plans to crank it up to 30km.

He has awarded contracts for nearly 1,900km of expressways between April and August this year, a 90 per cent jump over last year, reports The Telegraph.

It is not confirmed if Modi signed the national flag
or a piece of fabric resembling it.

Staff correspondent, September 25, 2015, NewsCrunch

Indian officials have taken away a fabric resembling Indian Tri-Colour allegedly signed by PM Modi to check for code violation, reports ABP News.

Modi landed in new controversy on Thursday when he signed a fabric, which resembled Indian flag, which Chef Vikas Khanna was to hand over to US President Barack Obama.

News agency ANI tweeted a photo of the fabric, which created an immediate controversy.

It is not confirmed if Modi signed the national flag or a piece of fabric resembling it.

If he did sign the flag, Modi would have violated the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 as amended in 2003.

The Explanation 4 of the Act prohibits “putting any kind of inscription upon the Indian National Flag.”

The offense is serious and the punishment for insulting the national flag may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.

Vikas Khanna met Modi when he prepared the menu for PM’s dinner with 40 top executives of Americalast night. He is scheduled to present his coffee table book on festival cuisine in Indiato President Obama.

Interestingly, three months ago Modi had been embroiled in a similar controversy. On the Yoga Day, Modi had come dressed in a simple kurta and pyjama sporting a stole around his neck, which interestingly was designed in Indian Tri-colours.

As he took part in the 35-minute long Yoga session, Modi visibly grew tired and used the stole to wipe off the sweat from his face, creating a social media uproar.

A harmless remark made by Celebrity Chef Vikas Khanna during TV interviews landed PM Modi in a new national flag controversy.

Vikas Khanna had been invited to oversee the dinner hosted by Modi to 40 US CEOs on Thursday.

Speaking to the TV channels on Thursday evening, Vikas Khanna was more than willing to share details of his arrangements.

He said he had cooked festival food of India for the distinguished guests  of the PM, singling out a ravioli dish as his favourite.

Modi reportedly told Vikas Khanna that he made him proud, a news the chef could not wait to share with his mother.  He described Modi’s praise as a big deal.

Then someone pointed out at a book and the Tri-colour he was holding, and that got him to talk about his book Utsav, a collection of Indian festival recipes as improvised by him.

Vikas Khanna said he was planning to give the book to President Obama in a week’s time and said he had two choices before him.

He could have placed the book in a golden box and presented it to Obama or gifted it along with an Indian flag he had received from a girl with Smile Foundation. The flag had been made of pure khadi, he emphasised.

When Vikas Khanna requested Modi to sign it, the PM seems to have gladly obliged.

But after the controversy broke out Vikas Khanna tweeted denying that Modi had signed the Tri-Colour. He said the fabric had a "Make in India insignia with Ashoka Chakra gears hand painted by Smile Foundation children."
