The Statue of Unity, which is being erected in honour of India's iron man Sardar Vallabhai patel, is being made in China. Seven hundred workers of Jiangxi Tongqing Metal Handicrafts Company, which runs the "world’s biggest foundry”, at Nanchang province are racing against the time to finish it in two-and-a-half years, reports The Outlook.
Statue of Unity, pride of India, but Made in China

October 20, 2015, NewsCrunch

The Statue of Unity, which is being erected in honour of India's iron man Sardar Vallabhai patel, is being made in China.
Seven hundred workers of Jiangxi Tongqing Metal Handicrafts Company, which runs the "world’s biggest foundry”, at Nanchang province are racing against the time to finish it in two-and-a-half years, reports The Outlook

Due for installation in 2018,
Statue of Unity would stand 182-metre tall and set Guinness record as the World’s Tallest Statue. Larsen & Toubro, which won the Rs 2,989-crore project, decided to outsource the work to China reportedly on cost and time considerations.

Larsen & Toubro told Outlook that it cannot comment on the matter citing contract obligations. But Huan Chang, the son of the owner of Jiangxi Tongqing foundry said they had been selected to make the Statue of Unity as they had scale and also the previous experience of building similar tall structures.

He also endorsed that it was a good decision to honour Sardar Patel, whom he described as India’s Iron Man, with a record-setting Statue.

Outlook said the outsourcing of the Statue of Unity work, which is being projected as the pride of India, was ironic. "...The irony of a ‘Made in China’ stamp on the man who made India is too difficult to miss," it commented.

Indian Express reported on Sunday that 5,000 pieces of the Statue would brought to Sadhu Bet, the site of the statue, and assembled with the help of hundreds of Chinese workers.

Express also said it was not able to contact Jiangxi Tongqing as its emails failed to get a response.

Successful arranged marriages are made in heaven and Reliance founder Dhirubhai Ambani knew how to make them happen.

The man, who built an empire navigating through the maze of Indian bureaucracy, brought all his skills and subtlety to arrange a match for his elder son, Mukesh.

He and his wife saw Nita at a Gharba dance and were bowled over. The first time Dhirubhai called Nita’s home, she banged it down thinking it was a prank call. But he persisted and spoke to his father, took both Nita and Mukesh into confidence, though independently.

Mukesh says he let his parents find a match on the condition that the final decision would be only his.   A short successful courtship followed with Mukesh proposing to Nita in the middle of a busy road during peak traffic hour, blocking the vehicles behind.

As irate drivers honked, Mukesh popped the question and Nita said, “May be”.

In this delightful video recorded for an old BBC programme, India’s power couple share the story of how they met and live happily ever after.

Virender Sehwag, who wanted to retire on his birthday on Tuesday, unwittingly leaked it on  Monday night. Though a round of confusion followed – many reporting and  later carrying the denial – the writing on the wall was clear.

It was over for India’s most dashing batsman, the man who wielded the willow like a  sledgehammer. On Tuesday, he tweeted his retirement and followed it up with a gracious letter thanking everyone for the role they played in shaping his career.

He misses his father and is happy with his family. He also reminds that he had always done what he felt was right and not what conformists thought to be right.

As he gets on with his life, we reproduce the full text of his letter:

Full text of Sehwag's statement after announcing his retirement:

"To paraphrase Mark Twain, the report of my retirement yesterday was exaggerated!

However, I have always done what I felt was right and not what conformists thought to be right. God has been kind and I have done what I wanted to do - on the field and in my life.

And I had decided some time back that I will retire on my 37th birthday. So today, while I spend my day with my family, I hereby announce my retirement from all forms of International Cricket and from the Indian Premier League.

Cricket has been my life and continues to be so. Playing for India was a memorable journey and I tried to make it more memorable for my team mates and the Indian cricket fans. I believe that I was reasonably successful in doing so. For that, I wish to thank all my team mates over the years - some of the greatest players of the game. I would like to thank all my captains who believed in me and backed me to the hilt. I also thank our greatest partner, the Indian cricket fan, for all the love, support and memories.

I have also played against a lot of great players and it was an absolute pleasure and honour to do so. It was possibly the greatest motivation there was to play to the best of my ability.

I have lived my dream and played at the finest of cricket grounds across the globe and I want to thank the groundsmen, clubs, associations and everyone who painstakingly prepare the arena for our performances.

I miss my father today, he was there when the journey started and I wish he could have been there today as well but I know I made him proud and wherever he is today, he is watching me with pride. I want to thank my coach, Mr. A.N. Sharma sir, who was possibly the only coach who could have groomed me into the player that I became. I would probably have struggled to play for my school under any other coach. My mother, my wife Aarti and my children Aaryavir and Vedant are my biggest strength and their presence in my life keeps my mind without fear and head held high.

I would like to thank the BCCI for all its support over the years. The work that the BCCI does at such a scale is phenomenal and it has had some fine administrators over the years who have led the Board in developing the game, appreciating the contribution of players and have brought a lot of benefit to the players.

I would also like to thank the Delhi and District Cricket Association and particularly Mr. Arun Jaitley who always supported me and sought our feedback and implemented what the players wanted and his presence ensured that I always had someone to rely upon personally and for the furtherance of the game's best interest in Delhi. I would like to thank everyone at the Haryana Cricket Association who have welcomed me with so much love and affection and it is really exciting to work with some really talented youngsters. I would especially like to thank Anirudh Chaudhary and Ranbir Singh Mahendra, who has always had words of motivation for me during the toughest of times and I have felt safe in the knowledge that I can always turn to him for well considered advice which I value immensely.

I would also like to thank the Delhi Daredevils and the Kings XI Punjab, the franchisees that I represented, for believing in me and letting me be a part of them. I always gave my best for my team and consider myself fortunate to play with some brilliant players in the IPL.

I would also like to thank the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC). Very little is known about the effort they put in to promote sportsmen and sportswomen across various disciplines. ONGC gave me the security to pursue my game and the organization will always have a special place in my heart.

I must also add that I have enjoyed every Press conference and every interaction with the members of the media through out my international career and the presence of Indian media on foreign tours has left some very pleasant memories that I shall always cherish.

I want to thank all my sponsors for believing in me and all the bat manufacturers that have been associated with me over the years for providing me the willow that I love.

I want to tell everyone at the SehwagInternationalSchool, Jhajjar that I now hope to have a higher frequency of visits to the campus to be with you all. I also want to thank everyone for all the cricketing advice given to me over the years and I apologise for not accepting most of it! I had a reason for not following it; I did it my way!"

The staff at the AhmedabadSolaCivilHospital played Garba in an ICU ward with loud music on Monday.

A video of the incident, which went viral on Tuesday, sparked an outrage across the country.

The Garba was performed at the newly-opened Hemodialysis ward for patients suffering from kidney-related ailments.

The video shows nurses in uniform and other staff in colour dress dancing in a line in the narrow space between hospital beds.  The laughter and gaiety of the Garba-performing staff contrasts with the gloomy looking patients all of who look on at the odd spectacle meekly.

As the video was widely condemned as a show of insensitivity the hospital authorities promised to take action against the errant staff. Gujarat Health Minister Nitin Patel, who inaugurated the new ICU ward, said the dancing took place after he had left the venue.

He told reporters that he had asked the hospital superintendent to serve show cause notices to those who were involved.

The Amitabh Bachchan family has become eligible to secure a monthly pension of Rs 1,50,000  from the Uttar Pradesh government.

Three Bachchans, Amitabh, Jaya and Abhishek, have won Yash Bharti Samman, the state's highest honour for excellence in public life.

The UP Cabinet on Tuesday decided to award a monthly pension of Rs 50,000 for the recipients of the award, reports The Times of India.

Despite the offer, the Bollywood's first family is likely to decline the offer with alacrity. While the money may not even tempt the uber-rich Bachchans, the adverse publicity would surely singe them.

Instituted in 1994 the Yash Bharti awards now come with Rs 11 lakh, a shawl and a citation. Closely associated with the Samajawadi Party, they were discontinued by the BSP government and were revived again in 2013 when Akhilesh Yadav became the chief minister.

This year 56 people received the awards though the number of recipients varies from year to year.

Many truly big names such as Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal seem to have gone out of the Garba circuit opting to perform only at their personally-branded live shows. But for many others it is moolah time.

According to Mid Day Mika Singh and Himesh Reshammiya are top of heap of the celebrity Garba singers, with each  charging Rs 30  lakh or above for a night’s performance.

Then you have either over-the-hill or upcoming names such as Kumar Sanu,  Udit Narayan, Ankit Tiwari,  Rahul Vaidya, and Neha Kakkar in the Rs 10 - 15 lakh range per show.

Singers like Prajakta Shukre,  Bhoomi Trivedi, Mauli Dave are said to charge around Rs 5 lakh per event.

Garba organisers are awash with funds and compete hard to net these singers, who are usually booked two to three months ahead of the D-day.

A video shot at KhaoYaiNational Park went viral after it captured a herd of elephants attacking a biker and then sparing his life.

The video of the last Sunday incident has generated nearly 2 million views on YouTube.

It shows the herd cornering the biker and trumpeting angrily, but retreating without hurting him after he apparently begged for his life.

While many interpreted it as a humane gesture by the elephants, who took pity on the man, experts say it was never the elephants intention to kill him.

Bangkok Post reports that bikers ride through KhaoYaiNational Park creating loud noise and irritating the animals. The man who took the video of Sunday’s attack said four bikers had passed through the same spot, before the incident, angering the elephants.

Experts told the newspaper that elephants never felt threatened and had no intention to kill. They were doubtless angry and what they did was the animal equivalent of humans waving finger in face angrily.

After the incident KhaoYaiNational Park officials are reportedly planning to regulate traffic through the forest.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi lost his cool on Wednesday and claimed on camera that people were dying left and right in this country.

The Congress leader was on a visit to the Kaili village at Haryana where two Dalit children had been burnt alive. He said the arson attack on the Dalit family was a result of "saffron policies".

After visiting the affected family he had a brief interaction with the media when a reporter asked him if he saw the tragedy as a photo opportunity.

Rahul Gandhi got visibly angry and said that was not the case as people were dying left and right in the country. Perhaps realising that he had overstated the case, he corrected himself. People are being beaten up left and right in the country, he said.

An old video of Canadian PM-elect Justin Trudeau doing Bhangra with a troop of Sikh dancers has gone viral.

It shows him in ethnic Indian dress, matching Punjabi girls step-for-step, with impressive grace and energy.

The video was shot in 2012 when he was the Liberal Party's points person for issues pertaining to youth, multiculturalism, citizenship and immigration. Trudeau has been a keen supporter of minority rights and says wearing veil for religious reasons is a fundamental right for Canadians.

In contrast, his conservative predecessor Harper had proposed a ban on public servants wearing a niqab.

Interestingly, 2012 was also the year Trudeau, who was then a young Canadian MP, announced his bid power and started a campaign that culminated in Liberals sweeping to power recently.

Justin is the eldest son of the 15th Prime Minister of Canada Pierre Trudeau.

V K Singh's controversial statement on Haryana's dalit children
is widely criticised as insensitive (video below)
October 22, 2015, NewsCrunch

Union Minister V K Singh triggered a controversy on Thursday when he made a shock comment on Haryana's murdered dalit children: "If someone throws stones at a dog, the government is not responsible," he said.

The two children were burnt alive when their house in Haryana's Faridabad district was set on fire on Tuesday.

While commenting on the incident V K Singh sought to give a clean chit to the government.

He pointed out that there was a running feud between the two families that ended in the attack.

Then he said the Haryana government had started an inquiry on the issue. He also drew an analogy to state that government could not be held for everything that happens in a state.

It was then he said,  "If someone throws stones at a dog, the government is not responsible."

After he came under criticism for his insensitive remarks, V K Singh tweeted saying he had not sought to draw an analogy between a dog and the dead dalit children. As a soldier he had put his life on line to defend the nation ignoring caste, creed and religious considerations, he reminded.

The statement echoes a statement made by Modi in an interview with Reuters last year. Talking about the 2002 Gujarat riots Modi said he felt sad but was not guilty about them. He then added saying he would be sad even if a “puppy” came under a car.

Ancient capital Amaravati is being reborn after 1,800 years.

The ancient capital Satavahanas in its heyday ruled large parts of India and held close sway over present-day Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Though there are disagreements over the dates, historians believe the empire lasted between 230 BCE to 220 CE, for about about 450 years.

The Sātavāhanas were vassals to the Mauryas, who shot into prominence after their decline. They competed with the Shungas and Kanvas of Magadha to establish their rule and later protected a huge part of India against foreign invaders such as the Sakas, Yavanas and Pahlavas.

Though Sātavāhanas were patrons of Hinduism, Buddhism also spread under their watch. A great stupa was built at Amaravati between the 2nd century BCE and the 3rd century CE.

In the 3rd century CE the Sātavāhanas empire split into smaller states and declined. Amaravati survived as a large village in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, India.

PM Modi laid foundation for the new capital on Thursday at Uddandarayunipalem, which is located around 23 km from the Amaravati village.

Dasara - Mysore's tryst with history (Video below)

October 23, 2015, NewsCrunch

Mysore Dasara has a majestic history of more than 400 years. Closely associated with Wodeyars, the kings of Mysore, the city celebrates the 10-day festival with cultural and religious fervour.

The festivities, which culminate with a jamboo savari or elephant procession on Vijayadashami, is indeed a walk down the memory lane.

An hour long documentary captures  the different facets of this long running tradition, which flowered under royal patronage.

It brings alive centuries of myth and legacy with a narration rich in anecdotes.

Raja Wodeyar, who revived Dasara, decreed that the festivities would not be interrupted even if there is a death in the royal family. Ironically, his will was tested by the death of his eldest son Nanjaraja in 1610.

Raja Wodeyar kept his grief private and ordered the Kingdom to celebrate Dasara as in any other year.

A sea-cliff that looks like a giant elephant dipping its trunk into the sea is a major tourist attraction in Heimaey, a remote island in Iceland.

The island is so remote and vulnerable to weather conditions, many adventuring souls return failing to get a proper view of Elephant rock, which is made of basalt.

Heimaey is the only populated island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, which has been formed by volcanic eruptions.

Eldfell, a volcano on Heimaey, erupted in 1973, destroying half the town and the harbour, its lifeline. The locals famously pumped cold seawater onto the flowing lava in a successful attempt to redirect it from their harbor.
