Vijayan and his wife Mohana - from Kochi to around the world
October 23, 2015, NewsCrunch

A Kochi tea seller Vijayan, who has traveled to 17 countries along with his wife Mohana, had a beautiful story to tell.

That happened when he met a brilliant young film maker Hari Mohanan.

The labour of love, a 10-minute documentary so aptly named Invisible Wings, is going Viral slowly picking up momentum, across the world. After the Indian media gave it a push, Mashable and others picked it up. We bet others will soon check in.

Vijayan should not be travelling the world. He is a poor man who runs Balaji Coffee House in Kochi, and can barely afford it. But the passion gave him invisible wings. He would take a loan, take a plane, settle debt over a few years and apply for a loan again.

The last trip to the US, which had gone missing from his itinerary, became difficult as banks had become apprehensive that Vijayan was getting old to be credit worthy. A spirited campaign by The News Minute got him to his destination.

People call him crazy, say he could have spent the money better on building assets for his future. Vijayan says the only assets that matter are his memories and the knowledge of what he has done.

In the aesthetically made Invisible Wings, he says life will stop you from doing things you should be doing. Don't get fixated on the hurdles, listen to your heart.

At the end of the short documentary, which is a  sheer delight to watch, he says thrice:

It is possible, it is possible and it is possible.

Lagaan 2: Aamir Khan okays concept similar to hit 2001 movie

Aamir Khan is reportedly considering a film, which would look like a sequel to his hit 2001 film, Lagaan.

Media reports say the movie would have a similar theme revolving around land tax and injustice, but have a contemporary setting with a social message. While some said the film would have new face for the female lead, Mid Day said Prachi Desai was being considered for the role.

The film is in the discussion stage, if reports are to be believed, with even the script still evolving, though Aamir Khan has reportedly okay-ed the concept.

Aamir Khan likes to announce his movies well in advance. He went public with Dangal when he was wrapping up PK's shooting.

Lagaan 2, if it sails through would be a surprise  as Aamir Khan, who dreads getting stereotyped, likes to bring in variation in his movies. Ghajini was followed by 3 Idiots and PK by Dangal, each movie as different as they can get and showing Aamir in an entirely new avatar.

But Lagaan 2, which follows Dangal, a movie set in rural India, would have a similar feel and breaks Aamir's obsession to do something new in each of his movies.

Lagaan was as much an Ashutosh Gowarikar movie as it was Aamir's. By the reports so far the brainy director seems to have nothing to do with the new project.

Adnan Sami gets top legal clearance, Indian citizenship to follow soon

October 24, 2015, NewsCrunch

Pakistani singer Adnan Sami's quest to get Indian citizenship is drawing to a close with the central government reportedly set to consider his application favourably.

The Attorney General has recommended granting him citizenship due to his distinguished service to the cause of art, reports The Times of India.

The newspaper quoted a Home Ministry official saying the government would grant Adnan Sami citizenship by naturalization under Section 6 of The Citizenship Act, 1955.

Adnan Sami came to India in 2001 on a one year visa and stayed back as he found professional success in the country. His multiple visa extensions and pronounced pro-India stance made him an unpopular figure in Pakistan.

There have been protests targeting him and burning his effigies, Adnan Sami has stated.

Though he has sought Indian citizenship for sometime now, his case acquired an urgency when Pakistan refused to renew his passport this May effectively rendering him a stateless person.

On his request, the Home Ministry agreed to let him stay permanently in the country on humanitarian grounds.

Adnan Sami says he could have chosen to acquire citizenship any country without any hassle. But he persisted with India as he is known worldwide as an Indian singer and has his heart set in the country.

In Thai culture representing death in any form is seen as bad omen and people there express surprise that Indians like to burn Ravan's effigies  reports Daily Yo.

The website also states that well-known Thai artist Somtow Papinian Sucharitkul, was forced to delete the scene of Thotsakan's death from his opera  "Ayodhya", in 2006, leading to a debate on the issue of freedom of expression.

In  change of script, organisers of a play at Gurgaon, pushed back alleged Shiv Sena activists who wanted to disrupt it to protest the presence of Pakistani artists.

After the Saturday night show, Pakistan artists thanked organisers and audience vowing that they would not allow the hatred of the few to upset them.

A small group of people claiming to be Shiv Sena workers barged into the play, which was in progress at Municipal Corporation's open theatre. They shouted anti-Pakistan slogans and removed flags of that country.

For a change the organisers, who outnumbered them, were not intimidated. They challenged the protesters  and evicted them from the venue even before the police arrived and ensured the play resumed.

After the play completed, Pakistani artists  spoke to media saying the love of 500 people mattered more than the hatred of five.

The Gurgaon  incident is the most recent of the spate of attacks Shiv Sena has made on Pakistanis in India.

In the last one month they have forced the organisers to cancel Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali's event and attacked BCCI office to prevent talks with Pakistani cricket board.

They also blackened former BJP ideologue Sudheendra Kulkarni's face for organising the launch of a book by former Pakistan minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri .

Jagjit and Chitra Singh - Recorded at BBC Pebble mill
Birminhgam 1979

October 25, 2015, NewsCrunch

A recording of an old BBC ghazal of Jagjit and Chitra Singh has been discovered and being shared by their fans with fervour.

BBC recorded Jagjit & Chitra Singh Live: Kothe Te Aa in 1979. The performance stands out because as a fan points out it shows two serious-natured soul mates in a playful mood. While Jagjit is in a mischievous mood throughout, there is a magical moment when he makes even Chitra smile.

The year would have held a special significance for the musical couple. They would have been married for a decade and overcome the stigma of the re-marriage of a divorcee which had caused a scandal then - Chitra had married after divorcing her first husband.

By 1979 they would also have left their strugling years finally behind and made their professional mark and begun to enjoy life.

Godse plot to kill Gandhi was known

October 26, 2015, NewsCrunch

An alert administration could have probably saved Gandhi from his assassin Godse's bullets.

There had been five earlier attempts on Gandhi's life. One of them by Godse himself, whose planned knife attack, had been thwarted when a policeman, who was trying to control the crowd, had pushed him away.

Ten days before Gandhi's death, Godse's friends had died while detonating a bomb. Godse's Mumbai host and partner-in-crime Narayan Apte was under constant surveillance by the intelligence agencies which knew that both had left for Delhi.

The Sunday Guardian states, quoting ICS officer Astad Dinshaw Gorwala, that the British knew about Godse's plan to kill Gandhi, but did nothing to stop it.

It has been noted elsewhere that despite Independence, the administration in the early years remained in the hands of the British-appointed officers, who were in the effective control of Lord Mountbatten India’s Governor-General.

A British police officer told Gorwala that instructions had come from the highest levels of British authorities asking police to ignore the developing plot. The British also reportedly tried to cover up that the assassins had been under surveillance.

Gorwala himself offered two theories on why the Britsh sat on the threat to Gandhi. One, they failed to take it seriously and take effective measures to protect Gandhi. Two, they made a cold-blooded calculation and allowed the assassination to happen as they did not like the then Home Minister Vallabhai Patel and wanted to cut him to size.

There was considerable heat on Patel after Gandhi's murder. The young socialist leader Jayaprakash Narain accused Patel of being criminally negligent. Patel tendered his resignation, which was rejected by Nehru.

Arun Shourie has spoken out against the Modi government earlier as well. He had said  Modi was centralising the country and remained clueless on economy.

The much-hyped Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's town hall event at Delhi IIT is likely to be anything but a live and spontaneous exchange of ideas.

He is expected to respond to only those questions that have been already been submitted and selected.

While there is no information on the format of the event, which is being managed by Facebook team, The Economic Times quoted a student saying Mark Zuckerberg would not take direct questions.

The student is among the lucky 10% of Delhi IIT students, who have been selected to attend the Town hall. But that may not prevent the discussion from veering into issues Mark Zuckerberg may not like to highlight during his visit - such as opposition to his pet project Free Basics.

Sabatold India Today that she was baffled as the EC considered them as one person.  Worldwide conjoined twins are treated as two legal persons. Though often conjoined for life they exhibit marked differences in personality and preference.

The EC's decision to issue just one voter id card to them seems to have flown out of a clerical error in the electoral roll that failed to list them as two separate individuals.

The electoral roll also enters their date of birth as January 1, 1990, while they were  born on March 1, 1997.

Manforce has released a new condom ad featuring adult star Sunny Leone though without any of the raunchiness, which had made its a older commercial controversial.

The older ad, which was released six months ago, was singled out and criticised by senior CPI leader Atul Anjan as vulgar. He had blamed such commercials for stoking rape incidents in India.

Perhaps stung by the controversy, Manforce has toned down the new commercial, which also features Sunny Leone, to promote its new chocolate-flavoured condoms.

The ad shows Sunny Leone driving with a hunk in an old convertible. She suggestively moves the gear to neutral, makes the car stop and gets on its bonnet. The voiceover says do something naughty and chocolaty as the man approaches her.

There is none of the wet clothes and beach-side antics, which made the first one a political talking point. But Sunny Leone’s mere presence packs enough power to send it viral. Released two weeks ago it has generated over 600,000 views.
