Bollywood star Salman Khan, who created a major controversy on Sunday by coming out in  support of Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon, deleted his controversial tweets and issued an unconditional apology.

Earlier in the day, he had criticised the imminent execution of Yakub Memon saying the hanging of one innocent man would  lead to the loss of the entire humanity.

Stating that Tiger Memon was the main culprit of Mumbai blasts, Salman Khan said he should be brought to justice and not his innocent brother. He had even requested Pakistani PM Shariff to surrender Tiger Memon if he was present in his country.

Salman Khan's tweets came under harsh criticism. He was faulted for supporting a convicted terrorist and ignoring the death of hundreds in the blasts. Many said Salman Khan who is also battling out several charges in the court was sympathising with a fellow criminal. The issue also took a communal turn with many saying Salman Khan was supporting a fellow Muslim.

Salman Khan's father Salim, alarmed by the controversy, called up his son and asked him to retract his comments saying they were creating a huge misunderstanding. A dutiful son Salman Khan deleted his tweets and apologised for the controversy.

He said he had faith in the judicial system of the country and reiterated that Tiger Memon should be brought to justice. He also said said he had never called YM innocent and maintained that his tweets did not have any religious angle.

"I respect all faiths and I will always will," he said.

The terror attack on a police station in Gurdaspur has killed at least five, including a Superintendent of Police.

The terrorists in Army uniform, came from across the border and started attacking random targets before landing on a police station at Dinanagar.

An India News Hour  video which captures the early response of the local policemen shows how unprepared they were to face a crisis like this. They are gathering around the police station, chatting casually and even breaking into an occasional smile.

As the media arrives, a journalist walks with the cops, sharing a joke and a hi-five.

Very few of the police are in any battle gear.

The baffling lack of alarm is shared by curious civilians, who try to peep over the  compound to get a better view of the holed-up terrorists.

They are joined by more policemen; one of them with a stunning pot belly is carrying a pistol. Mind you, you can hear gunshots all along.

The video shows a few men in bullet proof vests and fatigues walking in reluctantly. They ask the civilians to be packed off and for a helipad spot to be identified.

For some reason, they also do not inspire any confidence.

A dramatic video of a KLM Boeing 777 wavering dangerously in the stormy conditions of Amsterdam's Schiphol airport before landing safely has gone viral.

The day old clip uploaded on the YouTube by user '17splinter' has already garnered nearly 1.95 million views.

It shows a wobbly plane rocking gently from one side to another, almost like a playful child, as it approaches the ground;  but the sharp dip of the right wing towards the ground just before the safe landing makes the viewers draw in a sharp breath.

The Netherlands was lashed by high speed gales and rains during the weekend. The country's meteorological service issued a 'Code Red'. With wind bursts upto 121 kmph in the coastal regions, the country experienced its most violent July storm since record keeping began in 1901.

It has been reported that numerous flights were delayed, travelers were advised against taking the road and a man even lost his life when a tree fell on him.

Director Kabir Khan got shouted at by a  journalist during the launch  of Phantom trailer on Saturday.

The journalist, who is identified only by his first name Rajiv, got furious when Kabir Khan said the extremist elements in both Indiaand Pakistanhad to be removed for peace to set in.

The video, which shows the journalist losing temper, and daring Kabir Khan to name terrorist elements in India,is getting eyeballs.

As Katrina Kaif watched on nervously, Kabir Khan said he never used the phrase “terrorist elements”  and asked the journalist to calm down.

As the journalist continued to scream, Kabir Khan also shouted back asking him not to talk to him like that. “Come over here, let me see your face and have a normal conversation,” he said.

Kabir Khan controlled his temper and said: "If you make this discourse a bit more civil, then I'm ready to talk to you. Why are you screaming like that? Calm down, have some water."

The organisers of the event and a few scribes also tried to pacify the journalist.

Pee-proof paint is getting popular, may come to India someday - it splashes back, if you pee on it (With video)

Pee-proof paint coated wall splashes back the urine on the urinator. A still from YouTube video. (Video below)

Staff correspondent, July 27, 2015, NewsCrunch

Imagine. You pee on a wall. The wall has been coated with pee-proof paint. And it pees right back on you.

Not fiction. The fact? The special UV-coated pee-proof paint is so hydrophobic – dislikes water- that rather than allow pee to run down on it, it simply splashes back, wetting the pants and shoes of the unsuspecting urinator.

The CNN reports that the city of San Francisco has already painted 10 walls with pee-proof paint to reduce the menace of public urination.

Originally developed by 'Nissan' to keep cars clean, the concept was first put to use against public urination in the St Paul red light district of Hamburg in Northern Germany. While copious alcohol consumption fueled spending in the district, the local communities found it also led to many party goers urinating in the public. Enter, the pee-proof paint!

The idea then spread. The Australian lawmakers publicly discussed the relevance and utility of the technology, while San Franscisco has gone ahead and adopted it.

Not everyone is thrilled with this however. Critics worry about the impact that pee-proof paint wall coverage could have on homeless people. And argue that the same money used for painting can be diverted to provide more public rest rooms.

Will pee-proof paint make its way to India? After all, public urination is very common here. The city of New Delhi even launched a billboard campaign against this in 2009. Well, we don't know. One key concern will definitely be the cost. Considering that it takes $700 to cover six square meter area with pee-proof paint, maybe we'll just stick to random inserting of tiles with images of Gods and Goddesses into our walls.

Amorphophallus Titanum, the world’s largest flower has bloomed in Jindai Botinaical Gardens in Chofu, Japan, after five long years.

The garden officials were forced to extend opening hours to manage the crowd, which came to enjoy the rare sight.

Amorphophallus Titanum or Titan Arum blooms just a few times in its four-decade life span. Different flowers bloom at different frequencies, with some taking even up to 10 years to bloom. The time-lapse video below compresses the long-drawn blooming process into a four minute capsule.

One of the most ancient of the flowers, Amorphophallus Titanum can grow up to 10 feet.

It also produces a foul odour of rotting meat to attract pollinators such as flies and, is hence, called the corpse flower as well.

This plant is native of rainforests in western Sumatara, Indonesia.

The barely five year old Punjab Police Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team proved itself by gunning down all the three heavily-armed terrorists who crossed over from Pakistanon Monday.

The Punjab Police SWAT team had already started the operations when NSG arrived. The government took a bold decision to keep Punjab SWAT in-charge and NSG on standby. Indian Army covered the outer ring of the combat zone.

The attack by Pakistani-backed LeT terrorists left eight persons dead. They included three civilians, Superintendent of Police (Detective), Baljit Singh, a Punjab provincial service officer, two home guards and two policemen.

The Punjab Police SWAT arrived at the Dinapur police station, where the terrorists were holed up, and decided not to rush into combat to minimise casualty. They did their recce, assessed the movements of the terrorists, who kept firing indiscriminately, and mounted their attack.

The 12-hour-long-operation eliminated all the three terrorists with zero casualty to SWAT. The Punjab SWAT members emerged shouting their victory chants and uttering Punjab Ki Jai.

Punjab decided to build its own SWAT team to ensure quick response to emergencies especially terror strikes in 2009.

An Israeli company Ultimate Tactical Private Limited, was contracted in 2010 to train them, reports Indian Express. They are equipped with state-of-the-art assault rifles, support weapons, bullet-proof transport, light weight bullet-proof jackets and helmets. Each member carries a hands-free radio set.

The Punjab SWAT team was ready for active deployment in 2011.

Last year, a 30-member team was deployed at Attari border in Amritsar to back-up BSF after terrorists attacked the Paksitani side of the joint check post.

The SWAT team is trained at a discreet camp at Bahadurgarh Fort near Patiala.

At present, Punjab Police have three teams of SWAT, one of which is permanently attached to Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Money-hungry Indian astrologers, called witch doctors by the local media, have become a controversy in  New Zealand.

Many of them have set  up shops in South Auckland, which has a high concentration of people of Indian origin,  and are trying to con unsuspecting locals, says New Zealand media.

Pratima Nand, an Indian community leader, who went undercover to investigate these astrologers, is leading a campaign against them, reports 3News.

It has been revealed that these astrologers travel on tourist or temporary work visas, set up shops in houses or seedy rooms in commercial areas and advertise liberally in both print and local Indian TV channels. They promise  '100% guaranteed results' against various problems like black magic, money and marital discord.

They charge those who arrive at their doorsteps an 'office fee' of about $20 to simply grant an audience. They then diagnose the problem, which could happen over a series of consultations, and demand additional sums for the prayers and rituals they do on behalf of the visitors.

Engaging these astrologers costs hundreds or thousands of dollars; a man reportedly spent twelve thousand dollars for availing their services.

According to Pratima Nand, local Indians, who sublet their premises for these astrologers, are partly to blame for the problem.

The New Zealand Immigration Department has taken a serious note of this issue and is said to be investigating six astrologers, who could be deported. They are also linking with community members of Indian origin to resolve the issues.

As Indians grieve the passing away of their most loved President A P J Abdul Kalam, many are angry at Jharkhand Minister Neera Yadav, who had paid a shraddanjali to him, a few days in advance.

The world has surely witnessed more stunning coincidences; but the fact that Neera Yadav had gone viral last week by prematurely paying homage to the former president is again emerging as a talking point.

At a function in Hazaribagh district, while inaugurating a Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir, Neera Yadav had put a tilak on a garlanded picture of Abdul Kalam. What she did amounted to paying homage to a dead person.

Neera Yadav was widely criticised her for not knowing that the former president was alive and in good health. As her idiotic homage photo went viral, Neera Yadav said she had only put tilak on the photo, which had been already garlanded.

But after Abdul Kalam actually passed way on Monday at Shillong, many were quick to recall Neera Yadav episode and comment upon it.

Gurdaspur Superintendent of Police Baljit Singh’s death has come as a cruel blow to his family which is aghast that three of them have died at the hands of terrorists.

Baljit Singh was shot dead by three terrorists at Dinapur on Monday, when he was leading the charge against them.

Amar Singh, his paternal uncle, from Dandowal village in Jalandhar village, is particularly devastated. In the last four decades he had lost his brother ASI Achhar Singh -- Baljit Singh's father -- and own son Sepoy Manpreet Singh as well to terrorists.

Achhar Singh died in 1984 at an accident engineered by terrorists in Moga. Sepoy Manpreet Singh fell to terrorists’ bullets at Tarn Taran in 1991 just after joining the service.

“It seems like terrorism has come haunting us back again. It took us years to revive from those horrendous days. It is almost like a history repeating in our family,” Amar Singh was quoted by The Tribune saying.

Monday was a traumatic experience for Baljit Singh family as the events unfolded right before their eyes. After he rushed to the Dinapur police station, his worried wife called him. He told her curtly not to disturb him till the terrorists were dead. They stayed glued to the TV, which flashed that he had been killed just before 1 pm.

Baljit Singh, who was born in 1966, joined Punjabpolice in 1985 on compassionate grounds after his father died. He got promoted to PPS in September 2006 and worked as a DSP at different parts of the state.

In May this year, he got promoted again and took over as SP (D) at Gurdaspur.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son; all children are studying in college.

Bollywood’s desire to see its superstar khans – Sharukh, Salman and Aamir –  in the same movie is buzzing again.

A report in Mid Day claims that Yash Raj Film’s boss Aditya Chopra has managed to convince Sharukh and Salman to act together and is planning to direct the movie himself.

Mid Day quotes an industry insider saying Aditya Chopra had earlier planned a movie with Sharukh and Ranbir Kapoor. He later, decided to replace Ranbir with Salman, thinking he would make a better fit.

A Yash Raj spokesperson asked Mid Day not to speculate and wait for the official announcements on their future films.

The reports of the three Khans coming together in some combination keeps surfacing. Most recently, during Salman Khan’s Sister Arpita’s wedding, reports said producer Sajid Nadiadwala was trying to bring all the three Khans together till all three of them denied the speculation.

The three Kanshave their own domineering personality and matching egos. Given their larger than life images and aggressive fan followings, writing a balancing role for all the three in the same movie would be a nightmare for any filmmaker.

The chemistry between Salman and Sharukh changes with the weather, prompting filmmaker Farah Kan to comment once that not even God could bring them together in a film.

Salman and Sharukh were last seen together in 'Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam' (2002).

An IIM alumnus Srijan Pal Singh, with whom former President Abdul Kalam spent the last day his life, shares an anecdote that reveals the true nature of the former President.

Srijan Pal, who has worked closely with Dr Kalam, travelled with him to IIM, Shillong, where the former President was due to deliver a lecture.

They took a flight to Guwahati, and from there drove  for 2.5 hours to Shillong.

Writing in IBN Live, Srijan Pal Singh says Abdul Kalam travelled in a convoy of six to seven cars, occupying the second vehicle.

The lead vehicle, in front of them, was an open gypsy with three soldiers carrying guns. One of them was standing alert, holding his gun.

After sometime Dr Kalam stared worrying that the man would have been uncomfortable standing for so long and got a wireless message sent, asking him to sit.

The soldier, who was following the protocol in VVIP protection, declined the request and continued to stand. Dr Kalam continued to fret and asked Srijan Pal Singh, a few times to signal the soldier to sit down, which also went unheeded.

After they reached Shillong, Dr Kalam asked for the man. When he came Dr Kalam apologised for making him stand for so long and offered him something to eat.

The soldier was taken aback and was speechless. He managed to say “Sir, aapke liye to 6 ghante bhi khade rahenge,” writes Srijan Pal Singh.

A short video, which shows two reportedly Meerut girls in a catfight over boyfriend has gone viral.

Besides being shared on social media, the video has been picked by many mainstream media outlets as well.

But the video which was first posted by a US-based website has not been verified. There is no confirmation if the incident in the video was recorded at Meerut and if so, when.

But the fact that two girls in a small Indian town are fighting over a boyfriend is a significant development.

A discussion in Reddit mentioned that two decades ago it would have been difficult for a girl in small town to even point at someone as her boyfriend.

As the thread also mentioned, such fights are perhaps possible in Meerut as it fancies itself as the most modern of the UP towns, almost a part of NCR.

People of Meerutlook down upon people from the eastern UP, who are seen as backward.

There is also an observation that the catfight is not out of place in Meerut, which takes pride in its rustic, gun-toting culture.

A Kuwait Airways captain who called himself 'the naughty pilot', reportedly invited former porn star Chloe Mafia and her model friend to the cockpit during a flight from London's Heathrow to JFK International Airport, New York.

The 24-year-old Chloe Mafia, once a controversial participant of the hit British TV show 'X Factor', is a former porn star, Playboy model and owner of a business involving webcam stripping which made her a millionaire.

Chloe Mafia and her friend were offered champagne, a quick lesson in what the various buttons in the cockpit were meant for and a chance to sit on the pilot's knee, wear his hat and fly the plane.

The captain told the girls he could let them into cockpit since 'he made the rules.'

Other than regulations against allowing passengers into cockpit following 9/11, the captain who smoked 40 cigarettes during the journey also broke  a 'no smoking' rule existing since 2007.

Kuwait's communication minister Isa Al Kindari has ordered an urgent investigation following the media reports. 'The naughty pilot' has been summoned from Bangkok to Kuwait City for questioning.

Kohinoor, the diamond Queen Elizabeth II wears in her crown, is an emotive issue for Indians.

A short video by Israel's Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum on Kohinoor, which was discovered 5,000 years ago in India, explains why.

Kohinoor symbolises the centuries-long colonial rule by the British and Indians want it back to correct the  injustice. But the British have refused saying it is their policy not to return any precious assets extracted from former colonies.

Senior British MP Keith Vaz supported the Indian demand to get Kohinoor back on Tuesday, while backing Shashi Tharoor's demand that the UK compensate for its colonial damages.

A short documentary by Israel's Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum explains why the stone is so precious and the long history behind it. Kohinoor passed between Indian rulers till it landed in the British hands.

The documentary also introduces the lesser known a 140 carat Regent Diamond, which was also mined at Golkonda mines and is currently on display in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum keeps the exact replica of the world's most famous diamonds, including Kohinoor.

While the trailer of the soon-to-be released film 'Hero' has provided evidence of sizzling on-screen chemistry between Athiya Shetty and Sooraj Pancholi, the media is abuzz that they had to put up with a strict 'no-dating' clause during movie making and subsequent promotional activities.

The parents of both the stars were apprehensive that the constant physical proximity and their young age would make them fall for each other.

The parents considered Sooraj Pancholi's recent trouble with the law over Jiah Khan's suicide and also felt that the debutantes were too young to be in a relationship, reports DNA

Dainik Bhaskar reports that Hero's producer Salman Khan also supported the no-dating' policy clause.

But whether Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty will adhere to this  'no-dating' clause post-film production and promotion needs to be seen.

Yakub Memon was lured back to India with promise of fair treatement, say former Raw and CBI officers

Staff correspondent, July 29, 2015, NewsCrunch

A former CBI official Shantanu Sen says Indian security agencies promised fair treatment  to Yakub Memon to make him come back to the country.

Shantanu Sen was the head of the CBI's special task force that investigated the Mumbai blasts.

He told NDTV that there were disagreements within the Memon clan; Yakub Memon and his family felt unsafe and claustrophobic in Pakistan.

Though Tiger Memon was against their return to India, several Indian agencies including the Intelligence Bureau, and R&AW persuaded them to come back to India.

"We offered them the great justice of India," says Shantanu Sen, while adding that there were no false promises.

But another CBI officer OP Chattwal told NDTV that there were no instructions from anyone to show any favour to Yakub Memon. He also says evidence was not handed over by Yakub Memon, but was recovered from him.

The two voices emerging from CBI supports the argument of B Raman, former RAW official who said Indian agencies had let Yakub Memon down.

In an article written posthumously Raman says Yakub Memon returned on his own and was very cooperative during the investigation. His testimony was crucial in nailing Pakistan's role in Mumbai blasts.

Raman, who retired just after Memon's return to India, says Indian security agencies withheld Yakub Memon's cooperation from the court, which eventually lead to his death sentence.

A promise made by one section of security agencies, was not honoured by another. Many say Yakub Memon was let down as the P V Narasimha Rao government feared a backlash if the deal became public.

The just announced Magsaysay winner Anshu Gupta founded Goonj, an NGO, in 1999 to give aid to weaker communities. It works in 21 Indian states distributing over 1,000 tonnes of materials, from clothes to books, to the needy. It sources its supply from the rich and the middle-class families free of cost.

Goonj's work has been well-recognised. In 2012 NASA called it a  "Game Changing Innovation" and in the same year, Forbes magazine recognised Anshu Gupta as an influential  Indian rural entrepreneur.

In an interview with Business Standard last year, Anshu Gupta spoke about two experiences that got this former IIMC graduate and an aspiring journalist on the path of developmental work.

Anshu Gupta had met with a nasty accident during his late teens and was taken to a government hospital in Dehradun. The doctor asked for bribe to treat his fractured leg. But Anshu Gupta's father, an honest government officer, refused to pay and the doctor did a bad job deliberately.

"As a result, even today, I can't stand for long periods without experiencing pain," Anshu Gupta told Business Standard. And each time it hurts, he says, he remembers his father's honesty.
.
The second incident occurred when Anshu Gupta was an IIMC student. He had gone to old Delhi on a chilly December night with a professional 'unclaimed body collector'. They came across an unidentified man who had died of cold, wearing nothing but a thin cotton shirt. That is when Anshu Gupta realised that clothing was a basic human right
