National TV channels struggled to provide accurate results as the counting of votes progressed in Bihar on Sunday. Even after two hours of counting, different TV channels projected different figures with most saying BJP+ was ahead. At a point, Times Now was all set to declare BJP+ as the winner. Some of them corrected their numbers mid way. NDTV took a long break at about 10 am and when they came back they had made significant changes to their results table – JDU+ had replaced BJP+ in the leads.

National TV channels struggled to provide accurate results as the counting of votes progressed in Biharon Sunday.

TV channels gather poll results through private investigators, who are stationed at the counting centres. They note down numbers announced by their returning officers, which are presented on TV.

The investigators work for polling companies, which aggregate and sell data to TV channels.  And it is at this point, the messing up seems to have occurred.

Interestingly, local TV channels in Biharseems to have got the results right. They used their own reporters and stringers  to gather, aggregate and analyse data, which seems to have worked better.

Here is how Twitter  coped with the confusion on  Bihar results.

A TV grab of Chhota Rajan in custody

November 8, 2015, NewsCrunch

Underworld don Chhota Rajan, who is in CBI custody, seems to be leading a king’s life as far as the prisoners go.

He is put in an air conditioned lockup at the CBI headquarters in New Delhi, reserved for VVIPs who run foul with the law.

The Telegraph reports that the building is secured by 200 Delhi Police personnel on the outside. The inside of the building is under CISF control. Even the road is barricaded as Rajan faces threat from Dawood Ibrahim.

Rajan has been provided with four constables, more for company, who have been instructed to be friendly with him.

And instead of the regular lockup menu, CBI seems to be meeting all demands made by Rajan on food - toast with Vegemite spread, baked eggs with spinach, cheese sandwich, cornflakes with milk and burgers, lists The Telegraph.

The idea is to keep him good humour and make him cooperate with the probe.

The oddly named star pollster Today's Chanakya apologised for getting its exit poll on Bihar assembly elections completely wrong.

"We sincerely apologise all our friends & well wishers for not able to predict Bihar. Congratulations to the winning alliance," Today's Chanakya tweeted.

Today's Chanakya had predicted 155 seats for the BJP-led NDA and a mere 83 for the Grand Alliance of the Janata Dal-United, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress.

When the results came out, it was JDU-led alliance, which had got the seats Today's Chanakya had predicted for BJP.

Psychologists would be baffled by Today's Chanakya’s apology as exit polls are not an exact science and are expected to go wrong. But Today's Chanakya had built a stellar reputation by getting right the last two parliamentary elections and the state elections between them.

It was only in the last year’s New Delhi polls and today’s Bihar polls it saw its numbers going haywire.

But an apology was not enough, Today's Chanakya still got mercilessly trolled on Twitter.

In Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s New Age cabinet, it is the Sikh Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, who is hogging the headlines.

Canadian media has discovered that Harjit Sajjan took enormous personal risk during his deployment in Afghanistan, and was responsible for the killing or capture of 1,500 Taliban.

Harjit Sajjan took advantage of his long beard and Indian looks to mingle with the local population, and gather intelligence about Taliban activities. He put his own life in danger almost on daily basis.

It was this intelligence that was responsible for the killing or capture of 1,500 Taliban.

National Observer accessed a 2006 letter written by Brigadier General David Fraser to Vancouverpolice chief Jamie Graham thanking him for loaning Detective Constable Sajjan for the military duty.

He described Harjit Sajjan as “the best single Canadian intelligence asset in [war] theater” whose "hard work, personal bravery and dogged determination undoubtedly saved a multitude of Coalition lives."

The letter, which details Harjit Sajjan’s personal exploits reads like a Bourne Trilogy movie script, noted National Observer.

However, a truly modest Sikh, Harjit Sajjan remains reluctant to talk about his exploits, and is only concerned about deploying Canadian troops out of the harms way.

It is not just Harjit Sajjan’s bravery, even a photo of his in combat gear, has gone viral in Canada.

Nitish Kumar's poll strategist Prashant Kishor knew how Modi's mind worked - did not allow his wave to build up in Bihar

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar's poll strategist Prashant Kishor played an impressive role in crafting his victory. Ironically, Prashant Kishor was also the man behind Modi's electoral sweep in 2014.

After he lost out in the power struggle within Modi camp, Prashant Kishor shifted his loyalty to Nitish Kumar.

This turned out to be a huge advantage as Prashant Kishor knew how Modi's mind worked.

"...We knew the PM’s mind. The battle is half won, if one can rattle him,” Kishor told The Hindustan Times during the Bihar election.

The key to Prashant Kishor's strategy was not to let Modi wave build up. Unlike in 2014, Modi never managed  to get momentum in Bihar, while several other factors equally contributed, Prashant Kishor had a role to play

“Our purpose was limited: do not allow a Modi hype to build,” said Prashant Kishor, told HT.

Prashant Kishor ensured that Modi would not set the agenda, would react to baits and that Nitish Kumar would dominate the conversation.

The road Modi took to reach his rally venue at Muzaffarpur was flooded with Nitish Kumar’s posters.
Before he landed in Patna, Nitish Kumar's Twitter handle sent a series of tweets  firing questions at him. Modi walked into the trap and started his speech reacting to the tweets.

The idea was to put Modi on the defensive and it worked. Prashant Kishor's research team also ensured that Nitish Kumar always had enough ammunition to tear onto Modi's arguments and BJP was caught surprised, without a counter repartee.

Prashant Kishor's imprint was clear from word go. Working out of Nitish Kumar's official residence, he had access and clout, and used it to the hilt.

Even before the campaign took off, Nitish Kumar had jump started on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp.

Prashant Kishor also used print and TV ads, billboards, LED-mounted trucks, teams of analysts and copy writers to give a sharp edge to the JD(U) campaign.

He also crafted catchy slogans and campaigns such as Ghar Ghar Dastak and sending DNA samples, which put BJP on the defensive.

HT reports that Prashant Kishor also prevailed upon Nitish Kumar and Lalu to campaign separately, allowing them to reach out to a large number of people. .

All of this added up to a wave that swept aside BJP an its star campaigner Modi.

BJP’s anger with its dissenting party MP Shatrughan Sinha exploded on Monday when its General Secreatry Kailash Vijayvargiya compared him to a dog.

A video released by ANI shows Vijayvargiya launching a no-holds barred attack on  Shatrughan Sinha.

Trying to invoke the analogy of dogs chasing cars, Vijayvargiya said a dog may think that the car is moving because of it.

He was possibly answering a question on Shatrughan Sinha, which was not shown in the video.

He clarified that a party is run by a group not individual.

Vijayvargiya’s comments came just before when the BJP parliamentary Board convened to analyse the causes of defeat. After the Board meeting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley asked fellow BJP leaders to exercise restraint and ensure they did not cross the limits of decency in their speech.

Controversial and out of turn statements by BJP leaders is seen as a contributing factor to BJP’s massive defeat in Bihar.

BJP and allied organisations maintain that the former Mysore ruler was a Muslim fanatic, who demolished temples and converted Hindus by force.

While the historians probe the deeds or misdeeds of Tipu Sultan, there is strong evidence of several temples in Karnataka still cherishing their association with him. Many of them prospered under his rule benefiting directly from him.

Sharada temple, Sringeri

Tipu sent funds generously for the restoration of the temple and the re-consecration of the image of Sri Sharada. The temple has maintained its correspondence with Tipu Sultan in its archives. There are letters in which Tipu requests the Swamiji to perform Satachandi and Sahasrachandi japa to help him gain divine blessings.

The Sharada temple at  Sringeri, a seat of Shankaracharya, perhaps  has the best documented association with Tipu Sultan. When the temple was looted by Maratha  chieftains, the pontiff Sri Sacchidananda Bharati III appealed to Tipu Sultan for help.

When the Swamiji went to Pune to complain to Peshwas about their representatives’ misdeed, Tipu wrote asking him to return to his “motherland” and not spend so much time in a “foreign country”.

He also requested the Swamiji to visit Mysoreon the way back and spend a few days with him.

The ‘Modi not welcome’ image that was supposedly beamed on UK Parliament building is possibly a fake, just clever photoshop work.

The image released by Awaaz Network, a London-based activist group, was reportedly a snapshot of a larger clip that was projected on the iconic West Minster building.

Reports said the projection showed Modi wielding a sword in front of an Om sign, which appears to be transforming into a swastika, the hated Nazi symbol.

The image went viral and many media Indian publications rushed to report it.

Ibn Live‘s London correspondent Sanjay Suri reports that the image is a photoshop work. He checked with the Londonpolice, who said they have no knowledge of any projection incident.

AAP social media chief Ankit Lal, who seems to have played a role in distributing it, said the image was genuine. He said he stood by it and would get Awaaz Network to release a press note on the subject.

Awaaz Network also tweeted hinting but not explicitly stating that the image was genuine.

However, IBN Live seems to have got it right.

The image projection on Parliament building should have caught the attention of mainstream British media who seem to be oblivious to it.

There is also no video of the incident – which should have surfaced by now either through the organisers of the protest or trigger-happy onlookers.

The Awaaz Network website, which is organising a protest against Modi on November 12 makes no mention of any projection on any Parliament building.

Four senior BJP leaders -- LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Shanta Kumar and Yashwant Sinha today -- issued a joint statement on Tuesday asking the party to identify and punish those responsible for its defeat in the Bihar assembly elections.

They said the party had been emasculated and lost its consensual approach.

These words and sentiments have the imprint of Arun Shourie and Govindacharya, two Advani loyalists, known for their way with the words.  Both are fierce critics of Modi and they seem to have set the tone for the veterans' revolt.

It is easy to dismiss the revolt as the frustration of the spent forces.

But it is real bad news for Modi and Shah. There is widespread anger against them in BJP. In supreme self-confidence or arrogance, they have centralised too much, marginalising too many.

For those licking their wounds, a parallel leadership may just have come in place.

As in any BJP crisis  this is the stage where RSS steps in. And they also seem to think that Modi and Shah need to be contained. A popular view within the party states that Mohan Bhagwat's badly timed comments on reservation were calculated to make BJP lose Bihar and put Modi and Shah in their place

It is unlikely Murli Manohar Joshi would have done anything if he thought it would upset RSS.

In whatever way RSS arbitrates, it is going to leave a badly weakened Prime Minister. Modi, from now on, may be as constrained as Manmohan Singh.

The results of Bihar election show that no lesson has been learnt from the Delhi fiasco. To say everyone is responsible for defeat in Bihar is to ensure everyone is held responsible.

It shows those who would have appropriated credit are bent on shrugging off responsibilty for the disastrous showing in Bihar.

A principle reason for the latest defeat is the way in party has been emasculated in the last year. A thorough review needed for reasons for defeat.

In a rare flash of anger Home minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday he did not know why his top officer L C Goyal was removed as home secretary in August.

When journalists pressed with the question, he said, "I don't know why. Please ask the Prime Minister."

Rajnath Singh, who always measures his words with caution, was perhaps caught off guard.

The Telegraph quoted an unnamed senior official, who said PMO had centralised power and was taking all important decisions, including key appointments, across the ministries.

Rajnath Singh and several other senior ministers were not even allowed to appoint private  secretaries of their choice last year.

It is for the first time any minister has taken out his frustration in public.

Goyal was abruptly transferred after he protested that Home Ministry was not in the loop on the Naga peace accord. He had opposed PMO going after activist Teesta Setalvad and also reportedly had differences with  a key officer loyal to Rajnath Singh.

India has approached the US to buy armed Predator Avenger drones, which can carry weapons and strike at targets.

In contrast, the Avenger can fly nonstop for 18 hours, conduct long-distance missions carrying a payload of two tons.

Fortune reports that if India gets Avenger it would get the ability to strike anywhere in Pakistan using unmanned flights.

It increases the chances of Indian retaliation against a terror attack from Pakistan and spark a new arms race between the two neighbours, Fortune said  quoting experts.
