Statement released by Devanuru Mahadeva on returning his awards

I believe that intellectuals, artists and writers have a role to play in keep governance sensitive and people oriented.

When others started returning awards due to rising intolerance I refrained from doing so showing an uncharacteristic patience.

But when a section of intellectuals and artists stood up to defend the government, I got fed up and decided to return the awards in disgust.

My decision is only symbolic as I would not be able to return the position and stature I may have received along with the awards.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may send poll strategist Prashant Kishor to Rajya Sabha in 2016.

Five Rajya Sabha members from Bihar retire next year  and Prashant Kishor has emerged as a hot favourite to replace one of them.

Coomi Kapoor notes in Indian Express that Nitish Kumar may also nominate Prashant Kishor to a body structured on the lines of Sonia Gandhi's National Advisory Council.

Prashant Kishor, who had crafted Narendra Modi's victory in 2014, shifted loyalty to Nitish Kumar after failing to find a suitable position in the new dispensation at the Centre.

Prashant Kishor wanted to start a policy organisation and continue as an adviser to he Prime Minister. But Modi's other confidants led by Amit Shah, reportedly scuttled it, to preempt the emergence of one more power centre.

That is the mistake Nitish Kumar wants to avoid.

The Congress party is reportedly in race with Mamata Banerjee's TMC to hire the services of celebrity poll strategist Prashant Kishor, who has just anchored a resounding victory to Grand Alliance in Bihar.

2016 will see five states going to elections and in a  climate of heightened political rivalry, his services are in demand.

Sankarshan Thakur of The Telegraph reports that Prashant Kishor met with both Sonia and Rahul Gandhi after Bihar poll results came out. He has been meeting top Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi.

The interactions which initially focused on Bihar campaign is now possibly broadening in scope to strike a relationship for the future.

The talks, as Telegraph notes, have been a closely guarded secret and would take sometime to resolve given  the tough conditions Prashant Kishor places before he takes up any assignment.

He demands a complete free hand,  unlimited access to top leaders and even physical proximity to them.

While campaigning for BJP in 2014, he worked out of Modi's official residence, a trick he repeated in Bihar, when he set up his office at the CM's bungalow in Patna.

His demands would unsettle many in the faction-driven and crony-led Congress party. Anticipating opposition, Prashant Kishor would not likely step in until he gets ironclad assurances that Congress means business.

For the floundering Congress party, which has struggled to hammer its strategy into shape, Prashant Kishor may be what the doctor has ordered.

Dalai Lama comments on rising intolerance in the country (Video below)

Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama hailed Bihar election results on Saturday and said the outcome showed that majority of Hindus believed in harmony.

Attending the convocation of a private university at Jalandhar, Dalai Lama made the statement while responding to a question on intolerance.

Despite a few "mischievous elements" and "a few problems", he said, India had stood by its value system of secularism and harmony.

"Bihar elections have proved that majority of Indian people still believe in harmony," he added.

He did not name any party or go into the specific incidents he was responding to.

The Times of India quoted him saying as the longest staying guest of India he did not want to get into its politics.

He also said there could be a few problems but overall the situation was very good and India had been following the principles of Ahimsa and harmony.

On Sunday, Dalai Lama's statements grew into  a controversy after BJP leader Subramanian Swamy criticised him. "His statements are uncalled for and shows his ignorance," Swamy said.

A writer from Bangalore, Sandhya Ramesh, has turned a propaganda video on Modi dedicated by Censor Board Chief Pahlaj Nihalani, into an object of ridicule.

The video India under Modi is playing at select theaters and online since November 10.

Sandhya Ramesh has painstakingly exposed that the video uses visuals of scientific accomplishments of other countries while showcasing Modi's work.

The list of visuals in the video include: International space station, California solar farm, Tour de France, NASA's Atlantis space shuttle, Japan's HTV-3 exiting the ISS, Moscow's International Business Centre, US Air Force's Tomcat and expressway construction in Dubai.

The video is more than a mindless compilation of attractive visuals. It is an attempt to pass off these accomplishments as Modi's contribution to humanity.

The filmmakers have used Atlantis space shuttle removing NASA logo with shabby photoshop work. The Make-in-India campaign's Lion mascot has been superimposed on the International space station photo.

The Modi propaganda video was released in theaters last week along with Salman Khan's movie Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. It has been drawing adverse comments as many found it to be in poor taste.

It compares Modi to Mahatma Gandhi and shows him meditating in Himalayas, again using a photoshopped image.

Pahlaj Nihalani had defended the video saying it was not meant to glorify Modi but to prompt everyone to work for the betterment of the nation.

Sandhya Ramesh, a New York University alumnus, is a published writer and a highly rated Quora member. Her tag line on Quora says she is curious about very specific things. Pahlaj Nihalani's Modi tribute turned out to be one of them.

Mumbai's Chatrapati Shivaji Terminal (CST), which had suffered a terror attack in 2008, similar  to what  Paris endured on Friday night paid home to French victims but with a glaring blunder.

The iconic building lit up with red, white and blue, which signify the colours of the Netherlands flag.

It was trying to emulate other landmark buildings around the world, which had draped themselves in French national colours - blue, white and red.

The French and the Dutch flags share the same colours though in a different order. The Dutch colours are horizontal while the French colours are vertical.

The mistake seems to be a casual oversight though you may expect the officials concerned to be more diligent on issues that sentimental in nature.

Why Air India One next to Air Force One looks like an MEA plant

November 16, 2015, NewsCrunch

Indian media rushed to cover itself with ridicule after it reported that Modi's Air India One was seen parked next to Obama's Air Force One.

Both the leaders are attending G-2- Summit at Antalya, Turkey.

Twitter was quick to seize the utter insignificance of the event and the extensive coverage that surrounded it.

The culprit in question was Press Trust of India (PTI), which is among the few media outlets that accompany Modi on his foreign trips. After PTI filed the report, it was mindlessly carried by many heavyweights including NDTV and Times of India.

But the report seems more like a Ministry of External Affairs plant than a reporter's initiative.

It also notes the different planes other leaders rode to Antalya -   737 Boeing (Australia's Malcolm Turnbull ), Airbus A319 (Brazil's Dilma Rousseff), Boeing 747 (Japan's Shinzo Abe.)

This is the sort of leisurely information an MEA bureaucrat would be better placed to gather than a humble reporter, who is running behind the PM's entourage.

The bureaucrat, and the perhaps the reporter as well, would have thought of putting a gloss on Modi's image by drawing a comparison with Obama. But it ended up as another PR stunt that went wrong.

The toxic foam at Bangalore's infamous Bellandur lake has bloated and descended on the overbridge in full force thanks to the heavy rain, the city has been receiving over the last few days.

The low pressure belt at Bay of Bengal, which is growing into a depression, has unleashed heavy rain over large parts of South India.

The residents of the Bellandur area in India's IT capital Bangalore are among the worst affected.

The highly polluted lake breaks into a snowy froth caused by the sewage and industrial pollutants, which flow into it. Whenever it rains, the froth builds up imposing itself  on the nearby roads.

The recent heavy rain has turned the foam into a mini avalanche making it difficult even for large motor vehicles to pass through the over bridge.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her daughter Priyanka Vadra met Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday evening.

Their visit, described as a courtesy call, follows BJP leader Subramanian Swamy's sensational disclosure that Rahul Gandhi had declared himself to be a British citizen in the documents of a private company floated and dissolved in Britain.

Swamy has threatened to write to Lok Sabha Speaker asking her to refer the matter to the Ethics Committee for stripping Rahul Gandhi of his membership of the House.

Congress sources maintained that Sonia's visit was scheduled earlier and not connected to the current controversy.

British Government documents show Rahul Gandhi as the director and secretary of the Backops Limited which functioned between 2003 and 2009.

When the company was incorporated the company documents identified Rahul Gandhi as an Indian national. But in two annual returns that later followed, he is identified as a British Citizen.

The Congress party has informally sought to dismiss the discrepancy as a clerical error and says it will write to British officials to correct the error.

A drunk NRI from Canada tried to get into Pakistan ramming through Indian and Pakistan check-post gates at the Wagah border on Monday.

He rammed his SUV through the Indian gate successfully, entered the  zero line but failed to breach the Pakistani side of the border, reports Dawn.

The NRI, who has not been identified,  is from Canada and is under the custody  of Indian authorities.

The Pakistanis reportedly took away his SUV but returned it later on the request of BSF officials.

His drunken adventure badly damaged Indian gate and dented Pakistan's, says Dawn.

The Indian is lucky to be alive. A suicide bomber killed 60 people on the Pak side of the border last November. Since then both the troops are on high alert and would be more than happy to shoot down anyone  acting suspiciously.
