Dropping "Indian flag" on moon was Abdul Kalam's idea, says former ISRO chief Madhavan Nair

In 2008, India became the fourth country to drop a national flag on Moon, and former ISRO chairman Dr. Madhavan Nair credits the idea to Dr Abdul Kalam.

To be precise, it was not the Indian flag you may be familiar with that was planted on the moon. It was actually the Moon Impact Probe (MIP), a microwave sized instrument, with the national tri-colour painted on its sides.

It was ejected out of the lunar orbiter Chandrayan 1 and took 25 minutes to reach Moon's surface.

The MIP got scattered over the surface of the Shackleton crater of the moon, when it landed violently at a speed of more than 3,100 mph. But this was on purpose, to enable the scientists collect data and images required for the 'soft landing' in future.

Writing in the Bangalore Mirror, Dr. Madhavan Nair, who headed the Chandrayaan 1 programme, says he had gone to the Rashtrapathi Bhavan on the invite of his former colleague, Dr Kalam.

During a post-dinner walk through the Mughal Gardens, the then President Kalam brought up this topic with him while excitedly discussing details concerning Chandrayan.

"You should put a flag on the moon," Dr Kalam said. "How else will you let the world know your country has made an impact?"

Three years later, on  14th November 2008, 8.34 pm Indian Time, India landed its flag on the moon.

A photo of a young man, who took a selfie in front of a hearse carrying Dr Abdul Kalam’s body is going viral, leaving behind a trail of disgust.

The unidentified man in white shirt is standing in front of the ceremonially decked-up hearse bringing in Dr Kalam’s body to his official residence at 10, Rajaji Marg.

He is holding his camera in landscape position to immortalise the moment.

As the Telegraph reports he was not the only man with selfie on his mind; many people, who had gone to Rajaji Marg to pay their last respect to Dr Kalam, came back with selfies.

Some of them even requested visiting dignitaries for a selfie opportunity, Amit Shah and Sitaram Yechury were among those who obliged.

A soldier from Kerala approached Sitaram Yechury and took a selfie with his camera. Sitaram Yechury thought he was being asked to clear the road, when the soldier approached him. But the soldier said: "No comrade, just one selfie."

The practice of taking selfies at funerals was started by Barack Obama, who did that at Nelson Mandela's funeral service. He posed with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and clicked, setting of a new craze.

A slickly produced fan teaser of Raees has come to the notice of Shah Rukh Khan Khan.

Released on Monday, by TKKFC & TeamFX Production, the teaser has been getting media attention, though not really grabbing the eyeballs, even after King Shah Rukh took note of it.

TKKFC, which stands for The King Kan Fan Club, has about 11,000 followers on Facebook. TeamFX Production seems to be a rookie.

But the fan teaser they have made stuns with its quality. It uses the soundtrack of the original, but matches it with its own visuals, replacing the liquor bottles with cigarette packs.

It was filmmaker Rahul Dholakia, who brought the teaser to Shah Rukh Khan’s notice. And Shah Rukh Khan responded with his inimitable sarcasm.

Let them finish the remaining part of Raees shooting, he said.

Wishing on her 29th birthday, Rishi Kapoor tweeted:

"Happy Happy Birthday dear @humasqureshi. God Bless.  The more you weigh, the harder you are to kidnap.. Stay safe.. Eat cake!"

The angry response that followed made him delete his tweet and say sorry. He said it was a personal joke with Huma on her birthday.

However, Huma graciously thanked him for the wishes and asked angry folks to take a chill pill.

Rishi Kapoor had got into trouble earlier for sharing a meme that made fun of Sonakshi Sinha’s weight and Alia Bhatt’s IQ.

Pixels, the new Adam Sandler science-fiction movie, blows up the world heritage monument Taj Mahal.

A bunch of extra-terrestrials invade earth using technology you find in vintage video games such as Pac-Man and Space Invaders.

A young man proposes a pretty girl in front of Taj Mahal, the monument of love and that is when the attack starts. The extra-terrestrials disintegrate Taj Mahal with their high-energy beams and later annihilate the man also, who got busy taking a selfie against the collapsing monument.

In the film, extraterrestrials misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, and invade earth. To counter the assault, a former arcade champion steps in.

The Taj Mahal disintegration teaser was personally released by Adam Sandler and the director Chris Columbus, saying Namaste for the Indian audience.

The movie has bombed in the US, the latest in the string of disasters for Adam Sandler.

The video was shared on Wednesday and titled  Horrible accident, Man Died In Wings of Airplane (Sic).

The visual shows a parked aircraft with maintenance crew milling around. A worker walks past the turbine and is sucked in. He is destroyed instantly and all you can see from outside is a flash of fire emanating from the rotating blades.

ABN Andhra Jyothi started operations in 2009 and describes itself as the no 1 Telugu news channel.

After its social media team failed to spot the obviously fake video, they had to suffer nasty comments from trolls.

Recountung the final days and hours of Yakub Memon

By Staff Correspondent, 30 July 2015, NewsCrunch.

Yakub Memon, who was hanged early Thursday, had given up hope  stopped eating and begun to hallucinate.

He had hoped for relief in the curative petition filed before the Supreme Court. Bur after it was turned down on July 21, he gave up, seeing the writing on the wall.

As he refused to eat, Nagpur prison doctors put him on an intravenous  saline drip to keep him going, reports The Mumbai Mirror.

Yakub Memon, who'd been transferred to the 'condemned cell' neighboring the hanging yard started hallucinating as the execution date approached.

There was some relief when his wife Raheen and daughter Zubeida visited him last week. His brother met him yesterday evening.

After the three-member judge bench refused to stay his execution on Wednesday, Yakub Memon broke down cursing his fate of being the only person from his family to face punishment for the blasts.

He seems to have accepted his fate finally. IANS reports that he changed into fresh clothes and took a bath on Thursday morning. He also read Quran and prayed before walking to the gallows.

Staff correspondent, July 30, 2015, NewsCrunch

A simmering discontent with Supreme Court Justice  A R Dave's quotes from Manusmriti blew up into a full scale war between Brahmins and Dalit activists on Twitter on Wednesday.

While hearing Yakub Memon's mercy petition Justice A R Dave on Tuesday took a strong line that as he had killed 257 people in Mumbai blasts it was the duty of the state to punish him.

To reinforce his argument, Justice A R Dave recalled verses from Manusmriti, and said a King must punish the sinners or the sin will fall on him and that a ‘danda’ (stick) has to be used for those who inflict cruelty on the innocent.

The quotes did not go down well with the Dalit opinion, which considers Manusmriti as a treatise, which sanctioned the oppressive caste system. Dr Ambedkar had famously burnt Manusmriti in 1927 to protest the Indian varna system, which the doctrine considers to be divine.

After Yakub Memon's mercy pleas were rejected by the Supreme Court on Wednesday a few Dalit activists started tweeting that the hanging was a brahmincal act to uphold a brahmincal notion of the country.

That led to a fierce response from Brahmin accounts and in no time Twitter descended into a raging battle between the two groups. The topic, Brahmins, trended for a few hours across the country.

Last year, Justice A R Dave had said that he would have introduced Gita and Mahabharata in class one, if he were the dictator of India. The comment was criticised by many, who said India was a diverse and a secular country to study any religious book in schools.

Time bomb: With outdated population control policies, India in rush to overtake China - 1.7 billion Indians by 2050

India will overtake China as the most populous
country in the world in 2022
By Staff Correspondent, 30 July 2015, NewsCrunch

India will overtake China's population six years sooner than expected.

The United Nations (UN) reported on Wednesday that contrary to its forecast in 2013, India will become the world's most populous country in the world in 2022 rather than 2028.

At present, India's population is 1.31 billion compared to 1.38 billion of China. It is expected that both will account for 1.4 billion people each in 2022. But then, the numbers in India will increase to 1.5 billion in 2030 and 1.7 billion in 2050. China's population on the other hand will be nearly stable in 2030s, after which it is expected to decline.

By 2050, it has been forecast that the world population will be 9.7 billion compared to the present 7.3 billion. India is one of the nine countries which will be responsible for half of the growth of all population.

Indian population-related policies on the other hand, are said to be 'stuck in the past'.

Sterilisation of women remains India's biggest contraceptive method. Lack of other forms of birth control, especially for women in rural areas, remains the biggest challenge . Of the 4.7 million women sterilised in 2013, 77 percent had never used any other forms of contraception.

Though the government has acknowledged this problem and promised to deliver more modern birth control methods to its women, half of whom are of reproductive age, the existing public health system is in no position to provide this. Incentives for getting sterilized however, have been increased.

The UN population projection again draws attention to the need for a more comprehensive and healthy family planning services in India.

Saathi, IIT Bombay’s queer support group has released a new video Mera Saathi, to sensitise the incoming batch on the sexuality issues.

The video, directed by Anisha Bajaj, has a group of students – gay and non-gay – speaking up about their experience in the campus.

What you hear is touching, honest and for a change, agony free.

Coming out and declaring your sexual orientation can be a joyous occasion, these students say. It can bring families closer, make you build a tight bond with your straight roommate.

The video has students identifying themselves as gays and lesbians thanking their non-gay pals for the support and the friendship. You have non-gays saying being a homosexual is no different than being anything else.

But all this nice and groovy experience happens within the eggshell of a campus. The world outside can be traumatic and there is a hint of that.

Two students speak in Oriya and Telugu, addressing the people they left behind when they came to IIT Bombay. Their message: value friendship, not orientation.

The video is sublime, edited to perfection. We wonder why its director Anisha Bajaj, who is the lesbian in the video, is wasting her time in IIT.

Saathi has in the past organised queer film festival inside the campus and hosted talks on queer issues to sensitise the students.

Singer Abhijeet threatened lawyer Prashant Bhushan on early Thursday saying he would beat him up with a worn-out shoe.

The singer was upset that Prashant Bhushan had the gall to wake up Chief Justice Dattu at midnight with a petition to save Yakub Memon.

Prashant Bhushan had strongly opposed the death sentence to Yakub Memon, a view opposed by a sizeable number of people in the country. However, Abhijeet became the first person to turn his anger into a threat of physical assault.

He also felt that the entire country wanted to bash up Prashant Bhushan. So, he tweeted saying he may have to seek an appointment to carry out his threat.

Abhijeet’s tweets may amount to inciting violence against Prashant Bhushan as one of them was tagged to right-wing activist Tajinder Bagga, who had earlier assaulted Prashant Bhushan to oppose his stand on Kashmir.

Abhijeet had courted controversy earlier as well with his reckless comments. During the Salman Khan hit-and-run verdict he had caused an outrage saying those slept on the road like dogs deserved to die like one.

Actor Rishi Kapoor has retaliated saying Abijeet’s balls should be cut off.

Whistle-blower Sanjiv Chaturvedi, who did India proud by winning the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award, has decided to give away all of his award money.

Sanjiv Chaturvedi will receive $30,000 (Rs 20,00,000) with his Magsaysay award, which he won with five other Asians, including fellow Indian Anshu Gupta.

Speaking to Governance Now, Sanjiv Chaturvedi says he will donate his award money to poor patients, who visit All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, for treatment.

AIIMS is close to Sanjiv Chaturvedi's heart as he built a national reputation as its tough Central Vigilance Officer (CVO). He had exposed the wrongdoings of Vineet Choudhury, an IAS officer close to BJP leader JP Nadda, who lobbied for his removal. Nadda is now the Union Health Minister.

Despite the Magsasay award and his announcement that he will give away the prize money,  Sanjiv Chaturvedi is yet to receive any congratulatory message from the Prime Minister.

The Mumbai Mirror notes that Prime Minister Modi has generally been quite generous in reaching out to people and organizations with congratulatory messages.

The PMO is reportedly upset with Sanjiv Chaturvedi for accessing a 2012 internal communication regarding the corruption cases he was pursuing, using RTI. He also moved the CIC against the PMO when it withheld information from him.

After the Magsasay award was announced Sanjiv Chaturvedi said PMO had been silent on fighting corruption in the country.

On Wednesday night, the Supreme Court assembled at well past mid-night to hear Yakub Memon's petition - the first time it had done so in its entire history.

Judges do hear late night petitions at their home; but the Supreme Court getting fully functional at the odd hour was a first.

The Telegraph legal correspondent R Balaji explains how the events unfolded:

He came to know that Yakub Memon's lawyers were making a last-ditch effort to save him after 10 pm.

The defence lawyers went to the Supreme Court and filed the petition with the night duty officer, who informed CJI Dattu and sent him the papers.

The media gathered in front of Dattu's  residence, about 4 kms away from the court, and waited till 1.30 am when Dattu decided that the three member bench headed by Justice Deepak Mishra would hear it.

There was some confusion among the media on where the hearing would be held  and many shuttled between Dattu's and Mishra's residences.

Learning that the Supreme Court would open at night, they rushed there to see the building illuminated and the security personnel in their position.

The three judges arrived at 3 am and the hearing commenced at 3.20 am. For an hour, till 4.20 am,  the defense lawyers and the Attorney General Mukul Rastogi argued.

Justice Deepak Mishra took 35 minutes to dictate his order, sealing Yakub Memon's fate.

Netaji papers lost?

Staff Correspondent, 31 July 2015, NewsCrunch

The Government may have lost the papers concerning the mysterious disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose due to poor record keeping.

A PTI report quotes the first Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of India Wajahat Habibullah saying the Subhas papers were not being disclosed because they were not there.

"Either they have been eaten up or disintegrated or lost. That is how records of Government of India are being maintained, " said Wajahat Habibullah.

He was speaking during an event marked to release the book 'RTI Use and Abuse.'

Successive governments have steadfastly refused to release any records related to the Netaji's disappearance and this has been an evergreen controversy.

After Independence, the Indian Government has constituted three commissions of inquiry, two of which confirmed Netaji's death in the plane crash.

The third however said that Bose faked his own death, and the report was rejected by the Government without citing any reason.

Another popular theory argues that Subhas Chadra Bose survived the crash but was taken prisoner by Stalin and died at a labour camp.

PM Modi came under praise for his gesture when he bent to touch the feet of 99-year-old and skullcap-wearing brother of Dr Abdul Kalam, A.P.J.M. Maraikayar.

Modi had gone to attend Dr Kalam's funeral at Rameshwaram. When he saw A.P.J.M. Maraikayar, he went to him and touched his feet. He also sat next to him, holding hands to comfort him.

Modi's gesture was quickly noticed and appreciated on Twitter. Many said they had never seen an Indian PM doing it and praised Modi for his humility.

Some were quick to interpret the gesture and said Modi was not against Muslims. They pointed out that Modi had refused to wear a skullcap in the past as it was just symbolism, but had no qualms in touching the feet of a skullcap-wearing Muslim elder.

A.P.J.M. Maraikayar is Dr Kalam's only surviving sibling. At 99 his memory plays games and he had tough time believing that Dr Kalam had indeed passed away.

The Kalams have lived in a small one-storied house in Rameshwaram for generations.

A YouTube grab of Harnaam Kaur

Staff correspondent, July 31, 2015, NewsCrunch

Body confidence activist Harnaam Kaur has made an anti-bullying video called Labels, which depicts the trauma she went through in her growing up years in the UK.

Twenty-four-year-old Harnaam Kaur has a beard as she suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome.

The video shows her enduring persistent taunts at school, where students stick yellow post-its on her calling her ‘freak’. She rushes to her home and climbs to her room, where the walls are covered end-to-end with the post-its gifted to her.

The powerful anti-bullying movie shows what Harnaam Kaur went through before she decided to challenge her fate and emerge as a plus-size model and a body confidence activist.

He problems started at 11, when she started growing facial hair – no amount of waxing, bleaching or shaving, cold keep it away and the teen was ready to give up on life.

It was from that low-point she pulled back and decided to step out of her bedroom, her safe refuge. She converted to Sikhism, which adores facial hair, and decided to flaunt hers’.

Recently, she shot into global fame when she posed for Urban Bridesmaid magazine in a bridal attire.

Harnaam Kaur’s stirring message: “Live happily, live contentedly. You have one life, live it right. Help each other achieve greatness, and empower each other to reach limits that you thought you couldn’t ever achieve.”
