If not, time to hit the gym.

After a long wait of three years, Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar made his effective debut in Parliament by asking a question.

Sachin, who was nominated for the upper house in 2012, not only has a poor attendance record, but had never asked a question before.

He had recently submitted a written question wanting to know if the Railways planned to create a separate zone for the Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi metros on the lines of what it had done in Kolkata.

Manoj Sinha, the MoS Railways, Kolkata Metro Railway replied on Friday that Kolkata Metro had been treated as a unique case, and hence there was no plan extend the approach to other Metros, reports The Economic Times.

Sachin has also listed another question for Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on the changes in provisions for issuing of driving licenses.

It is early to say if these questions mean Sachin is planning to take his parliamentary role more seriously.

In August 2014, fellow MPs had noted that Sachin attended Parliament rarely and cautioned that  he ran the risk of losing membership.

If a member is absent from the House for 60 days, his seat can be declared "vacant". At that time Sachin had bunked the sittings for 40 days.

Myntra's ad on empowering women, featuring Radhika Apte, sends out a powerful message against discrimination of pregnant women in workplace.

If you look at the stats on working Indian women, there is a definite pause when they get pregnant thanks to the unspoken corporate bias, which adds to their biological complexity.

Radhika Apte is an architect who is expecting. Her projects are being given away to a male colleague who is promoted as well. As Radhika Apte protests, her boss, also a woman, wants her to take it easy .
The sensitive ad takes a dramatic turn, which proves the boss horribly wrong as Radhika Apte decides it is time to speed up not slow down.

This is the second time Myntra is using a corporate ad to empower women. The first ad The Visit released a last year ago on a lesbian couple had also gone viral.

December 5, 2015, NewsCrunch

Floods have turned SR Ramanan, Director of Cyclone Warning Centre Chennai into a folk hero in Tamil Nadu.

The nonstop TV coverage and social media buzz, including fan pages on Facebook,  have made him a household name in the state.

Ramanan has been speaking on TV on weather for sometime now. But the recentfloods catapulted his fame and created him a huge fan base especially among students.

As rains started drenching Tamil Nadu in early November, government shut down schools and colleges for two weeks, forcing many institutions to postpone their exams.

Many believed that Ramanan’s warnings had prompted the government’s decision and that made him a hero among students, notes Scroll.

Fan pages and nick names - Rain Ramanan, Rain God, Cyclone King, Student’s God – proliferated celebrating Ramanan’s forecasts, which became the most keenly watched media events of the day.

In a culture which encourages over-the-top adulation Ramanan was not spared.

His wikipdiapage notes “…his extraordinary skills in predicting Cyclones despite…” and credits him for “…saving millions of lives of fishermen along the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu…”

But Ramanan had his feet firmly planted on the ground when he told Scroll that he was just the face of the operations. “A number of departments collaborate and put together data. I only make observations and present it to the media,” he clarified.

But his dedication to his duty vindicates the adulation he has been receiving. During the peak flood, Ramanan’s family which lives in an apartment in West-Mambalam got stranded as the area got flooded.

Ramanan, who was also stuck in the meteorological office, was unable to help as all roads to the area was flooded. He continued to focus on giving timely updates on the weather, while other government officers arranged for his family’s rescue, notes The News Minute.

A post graduate in physics from AnnamalaiUniversity, Ramanan has a PhD from the MadrasUniversity in the field of Agricultural Climatology.

He joined India Meteorological Department in 1980 and has worked as a forecaster in Northern Hemisphere Analysis centre in New Delhi and at Aviation Meteorological Office of Chennai Airport.

December 6, 2015, NewsCrunch

With the passing away of the former Maharaja of Tigiria, Orissa, in abject poverty, history has turned a page.

Brajraj Kshatriya Birbar Champuti Singh Mohapatra was the last surviving royal, who signed the Instrument of Accession to merge his kingdom with the newly independent India.

Champuti Singh, 97, died in his mud hut in Tigiria, 87 kms from Bhubaneshwar. After losing his wealth, the Maharaja survived on the hospitality of his villagers, whose affection he continued to  command.

In his heyday, Chamupati Singh was a playboy prince who led an envious life in India’s royal party circuit.

He had a fleet of 25 vintage luxury cars and lived in a palace. He married a princess and was famous as a hunter-prince, who had shot 13 tigers and 28 leopards.

After independence,  Champuti Singh was granted a purse of Rs 11,200, which was taken away  in 1975. His fortune dwindled after that and he was forced to sell his palace.

He separated from his wife, Rasmanajari Devi, a former MLA and three sons, in 1987 and has been living away from them.

Among the 26 princely states of Odisha, Tigiria was the smallest with an area of 119 sq km. His ancestors came from Rajasthan and set up their kingdom in 1245 AD.

Chamupati Singh eldest son  Bikram Pratap, 70, has been coronated as the next king of Tigiria.

The Chief Justice of India T S Thakur said on Sunday he reads Bhagwad Gita in Urdu as he could not understand Sanskrit. He also pointed out that the Gita he reads had been translated by a Muslim.

All religions - Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Sikhism - lead to the same God, a report in The Telegraph quoted him. .

Responding to a question on intolerance, the Chief Justice was seeking to emphasise his commitment to upholding the pluralistic nature of the  country.

Justice Thakur was emphatic in saying the country could not be divided on the basis of religion as it had already rejected the two-nation theory.

Dismissing intolerance as a political issue, he said there was no bias in judiciary.

"We are committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens. There is no fear to any section of society," said Justice Thakur.

Speaking on other issues, he supported Delhi government's plan to allow odd and even numbered on alternate days.

Justice Thakur, who has taken over as the 43rd Chief Justice of the country, was informally interacting with the media.

He has advocated tolerance earlier also.

He had refused a Jain organisation's plea to overturn Bombay High Court's stay on a state government ban on sale of meat and slaughter in Mumbai during the Paryurshan festival period.

Justice Thakur had quoted an Urdu couplet by poet Kabir, “ Why do you peek into the homes of those who use meat, let them do what they do, but why are you so bothered about them, brother'.

US academic Wendy Doniger's book The Hindus, which had drawn the ire of  right-wing groups, is back on sale in India.

Penguin India had withdrawn and pulped The Hindus: An Alternative History in February 2014 after an RSS ideologue Dina Nath Batra filed a case saying it had hurt his religious feelings.

A new publishing house Speaking Tiger has printed 7,000 copies of the book, which are being cautiously displayed at the retail book shops, reports Mumbai Mirror.

The copies of the book can also be bought online at Flipkart and Amazon.

Speaking Tiger was founded in September 2014 by Manas Saikia and Ravi Singh, who was Doniger's editor in Penguin India.

Saikia told Mirror that Penguin withdrew the book as they did not want to spend money in defending Wendy Doniger. "

It would have been thrown out in High Court...I have read the book and I am a Hindu myself. I didn't find anything that was upsetting," Saikia added.

A movie that promised to bring together Shahrukh Khan and Alia Bhatt may not happen, say media reports.

Bollywood Life says the movie may get shelved due to creative differences between director Gauri Shinde and one of the producers Karan Johar.

Johar, who was seen as the main backer of the movie, had tweeted about it sometime ago, setting off frenzied reporting on the movie.

The initial talking point was the gaping age difference between the supposed lead pair. At 49, SRK is twice as old as Alia, 22.

While in South film, heroes commonly pair up with young heroines, Bollywood audience is not very keen on that.

Though filmmakers took pain to emphasise that it would not be the regular boy-meets-girl love story and that SRK would play a lengthy cameo, the awkwardness about the movie persisted.

There were also report that SRK was not happy as the movie was drawing attention to his age.

Infosys chief Narayana Murthy has denied that he made the speech praising Modi that has gone viral.

Narayana Murthy posted a message on his Facebook page saying that the speech that has been attributed to him is fake, reports The Times of India.

The fake speech has the celebrated IT entrepreneur giving different reasons for calling Modi a good Prime Minister.

The speech is very rhetorical  and uses a language Narayana Murthy would not be associated with. For example, one line says, “I don't say Modi is the best pm, but its the first time when pakistan is totaly screwd up and china is scared (sic).”

But lack of grammar and credibility did not stop the post from going viral, prompting Narayana Murthy to issue a public denial.

On his Facebook page, he said, while he had respect for the PM, the speech was a fake.

“This style of prose is not reflective of how I think, write, or speak," Narayana Murthy added.

Sanjay Dutt will reportedly walk out of jail in March 2016, well before his sentence runs its full course.

After getting convicted for the possession of an AK-47 before the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Sanjay Dutt is currently serving a sentence of five years at Pune’s Yerawada jail.

He has spent time in jail in multiple stints after 1993, enjoyed multiple paroles and furloughs, and has now become eligible for an early release.

So, how much time has he spent in jail in all? Here is the complex math.

In March 2013, the Supreme Court upheld Sanjay Dutt's conviction and ordered him to serve a sentence of five years or 60 months.

Between 1993 and 2007, he had already spent 18 months in jail during the trial. So deducting for that, he was to serve a sentence of only 42 months or 3 years and 5 months.

His last stint in jail started in May 2013 and was to end in October 2016.

He is getting out 6 to 7 months early as Maharashtra prison rules allow prisoners to earn leaves for good behaviour and work.

There is some confusion on the exact number of leaves Sanjay Dutt has accrued – some reports peg it at a total of 114 days.

Prison and police officials have good leeway in deciding the total amount of leave a prisoner gets.

Between October 2013 and August 2015, Sanjay Dutt was also out on parole and furlough four times for 100 days.

So, his total time comes down further. Depending on his actual release, Sanjay Dutt may have managed to shave off between 10 to 12  months of his five year prison sentence.
