Hamtramck, a city next to Detroit in Michigan, is the first city in the US where Muslims are in majority.

The city was known for its Polish immigrants, who gave it an East European character. But as the Polish population dwindled, Muslims became the majority community in this city of 22,423.

A Muslim-majority city council was also elected recently.

A Polish pastor in the video below laments that the City will lose its East European character, but says it is a natural development.

A Muslim Maulvi says though there was opposition to the Muslim call to prayer through loud speakers initially, the city is at peace now.

A Muslim elected  member of City Council says he will represent all disregarding their colour of skin.

I am not sad, just empty, says Rohith Vemula in final note - Full text of Hyderabad Dalit Student's suicide letter

In his final and extremely moving note Rohit transcends his bitterness and gets philosophical.

January 19, 2016, NewsCrunch

An expelled Dalit student Rohith Vemula hanged himself on Sunday morning at a hostel room in Hyderabad University campus.

Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, and 4 others, have been booked for abetting his suicide. The Minister had written a letter to his HRD counterpart, Smriti Irani, about anti-national politics of Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) at the campus. Rohith was a key member of ASA and called it family.

He was a son of a security guard from Guntur district. Following expulsion, Rohith's stipend of Rs 25,000 was reportedly stopped. His family struggled to support him, running up debts.

Rohith was a second year PhD student, who wanted to be a writer like Carl Sagan.

His suicide note brings out his romance with the stars and a writing skill that is surprisingly, for an amateur, polished.

In his final and extremely moving note, Rohit transcends his bitterness and gets philosophical.

"I am writing this kind of letter for the first time. My first time of a final letter. Forgive me if I fail to make sense,"he notes.

As you read on, you will find  that Rohith's final letter makes perfect sense for the world he left behind.

 Good morning,

I would not be around when you read this letter. Don’t get angry on me. I know some of you truly cared for me, loved me and treated me very well.

I have no complaints on anyone. It was always with myself I had problems. I feel a growing gap between my soul and my body. And I have become a monster. I always wanted to be a writer. A writer of science, like Carl Sagan. At last, this is the only letter I am getting to write.

I loved Science, Stars, Nature, but then I loved people without knowing that people have long since divorced from nature. Our feelings are second handed. Our love is constructed. Our beliefs colored. Our originality valid through artificial art. It has become truly difficult to love without getting hurt.

The value of a man was reduced to his immediate identity and nearest possibility. To a vote. To a number. To a thing. Never was a man treated as a mind. As a glorious thing made up of star dust. In every field, in studies, in streets, in politics, and in dying and living.

I am writing this kind of letter for the first time. My first time of a final letter. Forgive me if I fail to make sense. My birth is my fatal accident. I can never recover from my childhood
loneliness. The unappreciated child from my past.

May be I was wrong, all the while, in understanding world. In understanding love, pain, life, death. There was no urgency. But I always was rushing. Desperate to start a life. All the while, some
people, for them, life itself is curse. My birth is my fatal accident. I can never recover from my childhood loneliness. The unappreciated child from my past.

I am not hurt at this moment. I am not sad. I am just empty. Unconcerned about myself. That’s pathetic. And that’s why I am doing this.  People may dub me as a coward. And selfish, or stupid once I am gone. I am not bothered about what I am called. I don’t believe in after-death
stories, ghosts, or spirits. If there is anything at all I believe, I believe that I can travel to the stars. And know about the other worlds.

If you, who is reading this letter can do anything for me, I have to get 7 months of my fellowship, one lakh and seventy five thousand rupees. Please see to it that my family is paid that. I have to give some 40 thousand to Ramji. He never asked them back. But please pay that to him

Let my funeral be silent and smooth. Behave like I just appeared and gone. Do not shed tears for me. Know that I am happy dead than being alive.

Uma anna, sorry for using your room for this thing. To ASA family, sorry for disappointing all of you. You loved me very much. I wish all the very best for the future.
 For one last time,

 Jai Bheem

I forgot to write the formalities. No one is responsible for my this act of killing myself.

No one has instigated me, whether by their acts or by their words to this act.  This is my decision and

I am the only one responsible for this.

Do not trouble my friends and enemies on this after I am gone.

(No Name)

(This note was reportedly found by the Police in the room, where Rohith's body was found. It made its way to Scribd.)

Continuing the trend that surfaced last year, there has been a steep fall in the number of candidates registering for JEE (Main) 2016.

Compared to 2015, one lakh less candidates have registered for this elite exam this year.

The Times of India reports that CBSE has received about 12 lakh applications till last week. Last year, 13 lakh students had registered for the test.

The decline was first witnessed in 2015, when the number of candidates appearing for JEE (Main) fell by 50,000.

The fall seems to have occurred across the states. Maharashtra, which sends the most aspirants, saw their number dropping by more than a third.

Candidates seem to be losing interest in engineering as it no longer guarantees a good job. As NewsCrunch had noted lack of opportunities is forcing graduates totake up odd jobs. Indiasaw a mushrooming of engineering colleges following the IT boom, which created a huge demand for technically qualified  employees.

A decade ago, the IT industry, which was growing by 30%, was annually hiring hundreds of thousands of engineering graduates.

But after the 2008 recession, the industry growth dipped and the last big hiring of 2.5 lakh freshers was recorded in 2012.

The glut of engineering graduates in the market has made these degrees unattractive, prompting students to explore alternative careers.

CNN IBN anchor Bhupendra Chaubey interviewed Bollywood actor Sunny Leone – who is promoting her movie Mastizaade– recently.

The interview was slotted for Hot Seat, a programme in which CNN IBN asks tough questions to celebrities.

Even then, the Bhupendra Chaubey’s journalistic masterpiece stood out or its inelegance. The senior journalist threw an incessant list of questions that have been described as rude, disgusting and insulting to Sunny Leone, all focusing on her past as a porn star.

He asked her if married women saw her as a threat; would Aamir Khan like to work with her;  how she felt when an MP held her responsible for corrupting Indian morality.

"Since you have come to Indian cinema, the number of people watching porn has increased proportionately... Can you respond to that," he asked.

Sunny Leone, who has a reputation for never losing her cool, took the questions sportingly and gave the best answers she could.

But the interview angered many of her Bollywood colleagues. They came to her defence and said Chaubey had no business embarrassing her in the way he did and slammed the interview as sexist and insensitive.

Batchmates say Prathyusha was a bubbly girl and had no problems in her studies.

January 20, 2016, NewCrunch

IIT-Madras has lodged a complaint with Kotturpuram police that a second year student Prathyusha L Vedantam has gone missing from its campus.

Prathyusha has reportedly left behind notes in her hostel room saying she was heading to Himalayas to attain sainthood.

Prathyusha, 26, from Brodipet in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, is an almunus of RVRJC College of Engineering. She joined IIT-Madras's department of engineering design in 2014.

In the notes she left behind in English and Telugu, Pratyusha says she wants to do research in spirituality and attain sainthood, reports The Times of India quoting a police officer.

She also reportedly says she would be under the protection of god and hopes never to be found again, reports Deccan Chronicle.

DC also quoted a staff of Sabarmati hostel where she stayed, saying Prathyusha had an ever-smiling face, and was nice to people.

Her batchmates said Prathyusha was bubbly girl with no signs of depression and had no problems in her studies.

“We were stumped to hear that she left her studies to attain sainthood,” one of them said.

Media reports said Prathyusha's social media presence showed a deep concern with  spirituality.

But NewsCrunch finds that she had presence in Quora, Facebook, Linkedin and YouTube.

Prathyusha was not very active on these platforms, nor was there any sign that  she was obsessed with spirituality.

Prathyusha went missing on Sunday after checking out of the hostel during the early hours.  Her parents alerted the university authorities after she failed to reach home.

An outfit known as Hindu Swabhiman is training Hindus, including children as young as eight years, to fight ISIS.

The `Dharma sena', as the militant force is called, believes that by 2020, ISIS will occupy western UP and has already reportedly trained 15,000 Hindus in over 50 camps in the region.

There are three known training camps in Meerut city and five in Muzaffarnagar district, which train men and women  in the use of weapons.

The leaders of the outfit, headquartered at a temple at Dasna in Ghaziabad district, have lost faith in Modi government. They say Modi was elected on the Hindutva plank, but has gone soft, and failed to deliver.

The leaders say the Hindu soldiers are not afraid to die as they are reborn.

The Times of India has a detailed report on the Hindu force, which can add to tensions, in a highly communally sensitive  region.

The best quote in the report comes from the IG Meerut Zone, Alok Sharma, who says he has no idea about Dharma Sena.

" We do not have any report on such activity taking place. I will certainly look into the matter,“ he told TOI on Monday .

This is not the first time media has dug deep into Hindu Swabhiman. The Hindustan Times had a report on the rise of the Hindutva warriors in western UP in October 2015. A month later The Quint had documented the group in a three part video series.

That does not seem to be sufficient to wake up the IG and his political masters.

Aamir Khan posted a Facebook message on Tuesday saying he wanted work with Sunny Leone.

In a controversial interview aired on CNN IBN, anchor Bhupendra Chaubey had speculated that Aamir Khan may not like to work with Sunny Leone due to her past as a porn star.

Bhupendra Chaubey has been roundly slammed for the cringe-worthy interview, which saw him posing insensitive and sexist questions focusing on Sunny Leone’s past life.

Aamir Khan said he had absolutely no problems with Sunny Leone’s "past" and would be happy to work with her.

He also pointed out that Sunny Leone conducted herself with a lot of grace and dignity in this interview.

“I wish I could have said the same about the interviewer,” Aamir Khan added

Bhupendra Chaubey’s speculation on Aamir Khan avoiding Sunny Leone was one of the highlights of his interview. His contention was that top stars like Aamir Khan stayed away from Sunny Leone.

Here is how the conversation went:

Bhupendra Chaubey: Would Aamir khan ever work with you?

Bhupendra Chaubey: Why?

Sunny Leone: Because of my background.

Bhupendra Chaubey: Do you want to work with Aamir Khan?

The mystery of Ranjit Katyal – the man does not exist, just a fictional hero of Airlift

Airlift, a highly awaited Akshay Kumar movie is due for release; but the man, whose heroics it celebrates, Ranjit Katyal, is nowhere to be seen. The movie is about how Ranjit Katyal, a rich and influential, Kuwait-based businessman uses his contacts and resources in Gulf to evacuate 170,000 Indians during the first Gulf war.
Where is Ranjit Katyal? Search Google, there is not one image of the man who organised the world’s largest evacuation.
January 20, 2016, NewsCrunch

Airlift, a highly awaited Akshay Kumar movie is due for release; but the man, whose heroics it celebrates, Ranjit Katyal, is nowhere to be seen.

The movie is about how Ranjit Katyal, a rich and influential, Kuwait-based businessman uses his contacts and resources in Gulf to evacuate 170,000 Indians during the first Gulf war.

Nobody had seen or heard of Ranjit Katyal before Airlift shooting started. Search Google, there is not one image of the man who organised the world’s largest evacuation.

Media reports have in the recentweeks celebrated the legend of Ranjit Katyal without really asking where he is now.

Akshay Kumar says he has not met him. But he adds that the director of the movie, Raja Menon, has.

Raja says that to make the shots authentic, Akshay Kumar would ask him what Ranjit Katyal would do in a given situation.  Again, the suggestion is the man  is for real.

Akshay Kumar also says the man was a multi-millionaire, who lost everything and is now back to being a millionaire.

So, where is he now – some reports say Gujarat and some say Kuwait. He is reportedly sees himself more as a Kuwaiti, where he made his fortune, than Indian.

So, what’s the truth about Ranjit Katyal.

The man is pure imagination. The film may be portraying real-life events. But it has woven them around a central character, who is pure fiction.

The Airlift story of massive evacuation against odds is for real. The real heroes were Indian embassy and air Indiaofficials. They raced against time to move Indians to Amman and airlift them from there.

As a post in Quorapoints out none of the Indian officials of the time have heard of a Ranjit Katyal. There are otheraccounts of the evacuation – the man is always found missing in action.

The character of Ranjit Katyal was created by the Airlift crew and they kept him real to make the movie more interesting. Now that the D-day is close by, they know they will have to let the cat out.

In a Filmfareinterview published on Wednesday, Akshay Kumar says  three or four people were involved in the evacuation operation.

“We’ve combined all their stories for the character but Ranjit Katyal was the main guy. We’ve changed his name in the film,” he adds.

The ABVP protesters said Siddharth Varadarajan was a pro-naxal, anti-national journalist.

Siddharth Varadarajan was scheduled to speak at the Senate hall of the Arts campus. After opposition surfaced, the AU authorities withdrew permission for holding the talk  at the venue.

The event organisers tried shifting the talk to the Students' Union Hall which does not need permission from university authorities. When they reached there, they reportedly found that ABVP members had got a religious leader to conduct a pravachan at the Hall.

Siddharth Varadarajan managed to deliver his lecture at Swaraj Bhawan, a venue outside the varsity campus.

Speaking to The Times of India, an ABVP activist, Yashwant Singh Rana, said  "If Yogi Adityanath was not allowed to enter or speak inside the varsity campus, why is this journalist allowed to enter the campus."
ABVP had invited BJP MP Adityanath to inaugurate a students union building on November 20. A group of students led by Richa Singh had gone on protest opposing his entry into the campus.

Richa Singh objected to including her name on the invitation card of Adityanath event and then went on a hunger strike opposing it. As the tension escalated, the district administration barred Adityanath's entry into Allahabad.

Speaking to Rediff, Richa Singh said the two programmes were different and there was no connection between them. She described Siddharth Varadarajan's talk as an academic event and Adityanath as a controversial man, who spoke against women and Muslims.

Richa Singh is the first women president of AU students union in 128 years. She fought the election as an independent candidate and emerged victorious owing to the support of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha.

The SP students wing decided to back her after its official candidate's nomination papers were rejected during scrutiny.

The head and the body of a rare Hindu idol, Harihara, have come together after 130 years at the NationalMuseum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Harihara, a deity who represents the unison of Shiva and Vishnu, is a symbol of prosperity in the Cambodian culture.

French scholars had removed the head of the 7th century idol from a temple in Takeo province in 1882 and displayed it at France's GuimetMuseum.

Cambodia had continued to display the headless body of Harihara and had been urging France to return the missing body part.
