They had a successful professional collaboration as well with Adhuna playing a strong creative role in all of Farhan’s projects.

Tim Friede, from Wisconsin, is on a strange quest – to develop immunity to snake bites.

In the last 16 years he has inflicted upon himself 160 bites from poisonous snakes.

A chilling video shows him pulling out a black mamba at his home and offering his hand to the poisonous creature.

The snake delivers two back-to-back bites and he bleeds profusely, but survives with a smile.

Tim Friede does this in the name of science – to help scientists develop a human vaccine for snake bites.

His effort seems to be paying off. His body has double the amount of antibodies to snake venom, according to Dr Brian Hanley, a PhD Microbiologist from the University of California.

Dr Brian Hanley told Daily Mail that his company Butterfly Sciences would help Tim develop his vaccine.

But the journey has been far from smooth for Tim Friede. He nearly died in 2011 when he got himself bitten by a cobra. He went into coma, but managed to survive.

His wife of 20 years divorced him over his obsession with snakes.

But there is no stopping Tim Friede, who continues to keep five deadly snakes at his home for his experiments.

The heart-warming viral story from Kerala that took over the Internet on Thursday is only partly true and comes with a disappointing twist.

The man with the golden heart has been  identified as the Dubai-based engineer Akhilesh Kumar; the hotel which hosted the incident is Hotel Sabrina on Pattambhi Road, Mallapuram.

When NewsCrunch took note of the story in the afternoon, key details were missing and we stated that we could not ascertain if it was true.

To recap, Akhilesh Kumar had gone to Hotel Sabrina for dinner. He saw two rag-picker children, a brother and sister, looking through the glass window from outside.

He invited them in and bought them food, which they ate and left quietly. When he asked for the bill, it came but without any amount mentioned. It just carried a hand-written message in Malayalam:

"We don't have a machine that can bill humanity. May good happen to you."

Akhilesh Kumar's generosity and the cashier's poetic large-hearted response  made people cry and the story went viral.

So, what is the disappointing twist in this story:

1) The incident, according to Akhilesh Kumar, occurred in 2013. He wrote about it on his Facebook page  only this month.

2) After the story went viral, reporters went to Hotel Sabrina to trace the cashier who had written the stunning message. But he could not be found. The hotel owner and none of the other staff could not remember the incident.

3) Akhilesh Kumar told media that he did not get any bill from the cashier, who seems to have just  waived it off. So, who wrote the message on the bill, the image of which has gone viral. Akhilesh Kumar himself. He says he downloaded the bill from the Net and wrote the line.

But he vouches that the incident is for real. He says in 2013 he used to live in a nearby place and would go to the restaurant to eat. He was eating parota and chicken one day when he saw two kids staring. He called them in and bought them food.

4) To be fair to Akhilesh Kumar, he seems to have written the incident as a story and not as a recollection of an actual incident. He also had not reportedly revealed details of the hotel or about himself in the post.

But then he was not counting on nosy reporters to snoop on his Facebook page and start the hunt.

Farhan Akhtar's crackling chemistry with Wazir co-star Aditi Rao Hydari was reportedly the last straw that broke the camel's back, in this case his 15-year-old marriage with Adhuna Bhabani.

Farhan had identified the kitchen scene in which he reconciles with Aditi as his favourite moment in the movie. In the scene, he tries to help an unhappy Aditi in doing the dishes but gets rebuffed. When he starts leaving, she holds him back.

There was also an intense lovemaking scene between Farhan and Aditi, which looked so sensuous, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra decided to chop it off to avoid problems with the censor board.

Quoting Bollywood grapevine, The Telegraph  said the scene was "...The last straw that broke the actor-director's 16-year marriage with hair stylist Adhuna Bhabani."

Of course, no Bollywood marriage crumbles over a scene, however passionate. But The Telegraph quoted an unnamed director saying gossip has linked Farhan to other women over the years testing Adhuna's patience.

The director is quoted saying Farhan had been involved with an assistant director while shooting Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Then, on the sets of Dil Dhadakne Do Farhan was reportedly linked to another co star.

"Adhuna was getting fed up... I think eventually with Wazir she threw in the towel," said the director.

Adhuna is Farhan's second wife. He had been briefly married to Riya Jain after a long relationship with Suman Ranganathan.

She was born in London to a Bengali father and a British mother. She grew up in London and came to India for the first time after her father's death to meet his family in Calcutta.

Adhuna made her Bollywood debut as hairstylist in Dil Chahta Hai, which was Farhan's maiden venture as director.

She runs a hugely successful BBlunt salons and has now launched a range of hair products by the same name.

Noted writer and Nehru clan member Nayantara Sahgal has agreed to take back the award from Sahitya Akademi, which she had returned last year protesting rising intolerance in the country.

ABP Live reports that nine other writers have agreed to take back the award though only Rajasthani writer Nand Bhardwaj has gone on record till now confirming the development.

About 40 writers had returned their awards over the Akademi's  silence and inaction over the killing of rationalists.

Speaking to The Hindustan Times, Nayantara said  the Akademi had written a letter to her saying it was against their policy to receive the returned award.

The Akademi has also returned a Rs One lakh cheque, which she said would be used on worthwhile causes.

Bhardwaj told HT that he was “satisfied” with the response of the Akademi.

Yielding to the pressure from writers Sahitya Akademi had passed a resolution in October condemning the murders. But it remains to be seen how other writers who had returned the award would react to the development.

Shashi Deshpande, for instance, had said clearly that she was returning the award as the Academy had failed to address the issue. She had pointed out instances in which Akademi had a chance to respond but had failed to do so.

While the response of other writers is awaited, Twitter is aleady out with its verdict. Nayantara and team seems to be heading for some serious bashing over what many described as politically motivated campaign.

Happy Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara cast - Le, sabka divorce hogaya!
January 22, 2016, NewsCrunch

With Farhan Akhtar and wife of 15 years Adhuna separating, the jinx of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
is complete.

All of its lead cast - Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Kalki Koechlin and Katrina Kaif - have separated from their wives or husbands or live-in partners.

The 2011 hit movie was about self-discovery and finding the truth in relationships even if it got messy. Elements of the film seem to have eerily played out in real life of the actors as well.

The first to go on the Splitville road, after the movie released, was Kalki Koechlin. She had married filmmaker Anurag Kashyap in 2011. In late 2013, they issued a joint statement saying that they were getting separated and eventually filed for divorce.

Next in the list was Hrithik Roshan whose 14-year-old marriage to Sussanne Khan ended in late 2014. Both are now happily divorced.

Abhay Deol, the reluctant groom in the movie, was third. He was in a live-in with actress Preeti Desai since 2011. The couple called it off in 2015.

The love lives of the remaining two - Katrina Kaif and Farhan Akhtar - unravelled almost simultaneously.

Katrina's  increasing rocky relationship with live-in boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor reportedly ended this month.  It was almost immediately followed up by Farhan and wife Adhuna issuing a separation statement.

The report, a little sketchy, even says Mahesh had tried to sell his kidney in desperation.

January 23, 2016, NewsCrunch

Mahesh Balmiki, a  second-year mining student at IIT-BHU, has reportedly dropped out to work as a sweeper due to poverty.

He had borrowed Rs 2.7-lakh to fund his education and had come under pressure to pay it back. He had also gone through a long bout of illness.

The Times of India reports that Mahesh’s father is paralysed and mother is a domestic help. Without support he had to take up a job as sweeper at his village in Rajasthan's Alwar, for just Rs 4,000 a month.

There was some help from social activist Sandeep Pandey, who was at IIT-BHU, as a contract lecturer. Pandey reached out to BHU alumni to raise funds to pay off Mahesh’s loan.

It is not clear why Pandey did not press the alumni further to save Mahesh's studies.

Pandey himself was controversially terminated by IIT-BHU allegedly for being a Naxal sympathiser.

The Times of India report, a little sketchy, even says Mahesh had tried to sell his kidney in desperation. But there were no takers as he was a dalit, he claims.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar hoisted India's biggest tricolour on Netaji's birth anniversary on Saturday on top of Ranchi Hill in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

The Ranchi Hill was once called Phansi Tongri as the British used to hang freedom fighters there.

The Ranchi Hill tricolour measures a massive 99X66 feet and flies on the country's tallest flagpost at 293 feet. Since it is located on a hill, the tip of the flagpole is almost 500 feet from the ground.

The cost of fabricating the world’s largest and tallest Indian flag came to Rs 1.25 crore and was raised through voluntary donations and government contribution.

The flag is the handiwork of the committee that manages the iconic Pahari Mandir, which stands atop the Ranchi Hill.

The Pahari Mandir has been hoisting the tricolour every Republic Day and Independence Day since 1947. Its new record-breaking flag, will however,  will be a permanent feature at the spot.

Successive Indian governments refused to bring back Subhas Chandra Bose’s ashes to the country from Japanfearing there could be a political backlash.

Instead, the opted to pay Tokyo’s Renkoji temple money for the safe keep of the urn containing the ashes.

Netaji’s family and political parties such as Forward Block were sceptical that Netaji had died in a plane crash in 1945.

Fearing an adverse reaction from them, Indian governments opted to keep the  ashes at the Renkoji temple.

In August 1976, TV Tajeswar, joint director in the Intelligence Bureau, noted that ashes should not be brought back as they would “create complications”.

He warned that if the ashes were brought back, the government would be accused of “foisting a false story upon the people of West Bengal and India, taking advantage of Emergency, and this may well figure as an important plant of propaganda if and when the elections are announced”.

The government also started paying Renkoji temple in 1967 for the upkeep of the urn containing ashes.

After 2002, Yen 1 million has been given annually from the Special Diplomatic Expenditure budget.

The revelations are part of the 100 secret papers on Netaji de-classified by Modi government on Saturday.

Noted historian Ramchandra Guha has dismissed a letter that was allegedly written by Jawaharlal Nehru calling Subhas Chanrda Bose, a war criminal, as fake .

The controversial letter on Netaji, which has been attributed to Nehru is dated Dec 27, 1945. It is addressed to Prime Minister of England, Clement Attlee, and refers to Netaji as a 'war criminal.'

The letter has been in circulation for sometime and different variants of it have been available in social media for sometime now. There is one version loaded with spelling mistakes, typing Downing streetas Down street.

Nehru’s critics have cited the letter as evidence of his antipathy to Netaji, while Nehru’s supporters have dismissed it as propaganda.

But a report filed by India Today on Saturday gave it credence and sent it viral.

Senior journalist Rahul Kanwal reported an exclusive claiming that in one of the newly declassified files, Jawahar Lal Nehru had referred to Subhas Chandra Bose as a 'war criminal.'

His report, published before the 100 files were declassified on Saturday, was based on “sources in the Modi government who have knowledge of the Netaji files.”

Kanwal also added that the “letter by Nehru was likely to set off a political furore in India as it feeds the long held notion that Nehru was unfair to the legacy of the great Netaji Bose.”

Aaj Tak TV, also from India Today group, reported on the letter.

There seems to be some support to Guha’s claim that the letter is fake.

A DNAreport publishes a newly declassified file in which the UK Government says it had not classified Netaji as a war criminal.

"Dear Mr Attlee,

I understand from reliable sources that Suhas Chandra Bose, your war criminal, has been allowed to enter Russian territory by Stalin. This is a clear treachery and betrayal of faith by the Russians as Russia has been an ally of the British-Americans, which she should not have done. Please take note of it and do what you consider proper and fit."

Yours Sincerely,
Jawaharlal Nehru.

Shahrukh and Aamir have been in hot water with their remarks on intolerance. But Saif, who has not spoken on the subject, still got slammed.

Appearing on ABP News show Press Conference Uma said, besides Aamir, Shah Rukh, Saif, there were another four or five actors who were making controversial comments. However, she did not name them.

The Telegraph quotes  Uma asking Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir not make "make an ideological statement wrapped in politics."

If they do they should "be prepared for a reaction from the other side," she adds.

She pointed out that freedom of expression was not a defence as the other side would also claim the same right.

Uma also assured that if actors remains actors, everybody would like them irrespective of political ideology,

As Amit Shah is set to head BJP for a full three-year term, party insiders expect him to change his style of functioning and assume a consensual approach.

Amit Shah, who led BJP to a spectacular victory, along with Modi, was elevated as BJP president in 2014 to complete  the remaining term of  Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

He lost no time in alienating key sections of the party, who complained of his arrogance and unilateral approach, which relied more on a coterie than tested local leaders of states.

In Delhi, he ignored the claims of popular leaders like Harsh Vardhan and brought in an outsider, Kiran Bedi, to fight a crucial poll. More than the expected negative verdict in Bihar, it was the AAP sweep in the capital that stung him.

The Delhi defeat was particularly humiliating as it came at a  time when the Modi aura was still shining bright.

Shah refused to change his approach in the Bihar and relied on a hand-picked team drawn from Delhi and Gujarat, ignoring local BJP leaders.  R.K. Singh complained about candidate selection, Shatrughan Sinha was not even enlisted to campaign

After Bihar results, there was a mini revolt by the old guard  - L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Shanta Kumar and Yashwant Sinha -  which had been kicked upstairs as margdarshaks.

Shah's second term would see tough assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat, and culminate in the 2019 general elections.

He is under pressure to deliver and it seems to have sunk in that he needs to change his track. Party men say it is happening.

He, of course with Modi's consent, recently allowed BJP Chief Ministers in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh to retain their preferred state unit presidents - Ashok Parnami, Nand Kumar Singh Chauhan and Dharamlal Kaushik, respectively.

The chief ministers - Vasundara Raje, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Raman Singh - wanted these incumbent presidents to continue and when they approached Shah they found him surprisingly receptive.

All the state presidents are strong allies of their respective chief ministers. Their continuation in the office would strengthen the CMs politically and increase their bargaining power vis-a-vis Shah and Modi.

This was exactly the scenario Shah worked overtime to avoid in his first term.

To agree to the CMs request for fresh terms for their party chiefs, Shah also had to overlook a strong preference within BJP to have just one term  state presidents.

As The Hindu points out atleast in Rajasthan's case Shah was not comfortable with Ashok Parnami getting a fresh term as it clearly puts Raje beyond the reach of the central leadership.

When Raje was embroiled in the Lalit Modi controversy, BJP wanted her to quit, to blunt Congress campaign. But she had successfully rallied her MLAs and resisted Central pressure.

It was Ashok Parnami, as state party head, who had run her campaign, jumping the gun to give her a clean chit, and then by keeping MLAs on her side of the fence.

Accepting him as Rajasthan BJP president is the sign of Amit Shah 2.0, say his party men.
