Video review: Indian National Anthem by The Sports Heroes is a lost opportunity

Jana Gana Mana  is preceded and followed by a screeching narration
on the merits of pursuing sports seriously. (Video below)
January 24, 2016, NewsCrunch

Former India left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni has assembled a galaxy of sport stars from
Sachin Tendulkar to Sania Mirza to sing national anthem to celebrate the 67th Republic Day.

Like the national anthem, sport is a strong uniting force. Bringing them together is an exciting prospect.

On Sunday, Sachin Tendulkar released the video “The Sports Heroes”, featuring Sunil Gavaskar, Sania Mirza, Mahesh Bhupathi, Dhanraj Pillay, Bhaichung Bhutia, Gagan Narang and Sushil Kumar.

The video, which has been directed by Abhjit Panse, is marked by good execution.

But the video unfortunately widens its scope to issue a call to youngsters to take up sports. The anthem is preceded and followed by a screeching narration on the merits of pursuing sports seriously.

It would also have been more authentic if the sports persons were coached to carry the Jana Gana Mana tune in their own voice instead of lip syncing professional singers.

Here was perhaps a chance to make the present generation's Mile sur mera tumhara. An opportunity that was indeed lost

January 25, 2016, NewsCrunch

The shooting for gangster bipopic Haseena has been delayed – one of the reasons that has been cited is Sonakshi Sinha needs time to put on weight for the movie.

Haseena is the biopic of a sister of Dawood Ibrahim of the same name, who build a notorious gang and was feared as the Godmother of Nagpada till she passed away in 2014.

After Sonakshi was chosen for the role last August, the shooting was scheduled to kick off in February, which has now been pushed to start later this year.

A source close to the project told Deccan Chronicle that Sonakshi needs to put on weight for the move in which she play a bulky 40-year-old woman.

She cannot do that till she gets her current films, Force 2 and Akira, out of the way.

Another account of the delay says Sonakshi is in two minds on doing the movie.

She is tempted that if she can pull it off, the film will put her in a different league. Sonakshi is flattered that Apoorva Lakhia even considered her for the role.

But Sonakshi is also apprehensive of playing a tough role knowing her limitations as a actor. The weight issue also seems to be troubling her mind.

An obese teen, Sonakshi struggled to lose pounds and transform into svelte heroine material. She still faces insensitive body shaming remarks that are thrown at her, as Rishi Kapoor did sometime ago.

She is not sure how looking like Aamir Khan in Dangal would impact her career.

She told PTI recently that she is yet to sign the dotted line.

The gossip has brought the short-lived Hrithik and Kangana dalliance into spotlight again

January 25, 2016, NewsCrunch

If Kangana Ranaut complains that Hrithik Roshan has treated her real shabbily, there would be takers for that.

Not only he refused to go public with their relationship when it was on, he also has reportedly got her ejected from Aashiqui 3.

T-Series was considering Kangana for the female lead of Aashiqui 3 till Hrithik put his foot down and blocked it, reports SpotBoye.

But reports say Aashiqui 3 cast is pretty fluid and even Hrithik is yet to fully commit to it. He has already announced that his next film would be an action adventure film to be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya under the Yash Raj banner.

Though Hrithik likes to do one film at a time, he reportedly wants to see if he can manage one more, not very demanding movie, simultaneously. Aashiqui 3 seems to fit the bill.

Whatever the fate of Aashiqui 3, the gossip has brought the short-lived Hrithik and Kangana dalliance into spotlight again.

The couple had been paired in the hit movie Krish 3 three years ago and become good friends. After Hrithik and Susanne  divorced, they dated last year for sometime, but fell out quickly.

While it is said that Kangana still pines for him, Hrithik for some reason was not willing to commit to her. He not only avoided any public appearance with her, but also went out of his way to dismiss all talks of an affair as trash.

Why has Pakistan failed to produce IITs? A Physicist from the country finds out

In Indian campuses you see a large number of foreigners, who
are a rarity in Pakistan, says Hoodbhoy
January 25, 2016, NewsCrunch

Pervez Hoodbhoy, a noted columnist, activist and physicist from Pakistan, was in India recently. He toured academic institutions, including IITs, giving talks and went back to share his experience with the Dawn leaders.

One of the questions he grapples with is why Pakistanhas failed to develop its version of IITs, the face of modern India, as he puts it.

Hoodbhoy notes that an essential condition is openness to the world of ideas, which requires the physical presence of foreign visitors.

In Indian campuses, Hoodbhoy says, you see a large number of foreigners — American, European, Japanese, and Chinese, who come for short visits as well as long stays, enriching universities and research centres.

But in Pakistanforeigners are regarded with suspicion and are a rarity. Hoodbhoy gives an example.

The National Centre for Physics in Islamabadis under Quaid-i-AzamUniversity. But it is actually ‘owned’ by the Strategic Plans Division, the custodian of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons.

“Academic visitors are so tightly restricted that they seek to flee their jails soon after arrival,” says Hoodbhoy.

He also recounts the experience of delegates, who came from Canada, Turkeyand Iran, to a recent conference in Pakistan. They protested in writing and said they would never want to come back.

Hoodbhoy also hints that the Indian openness might be at risk due to the rising tension between secular and religious forces under Modi.

He says Hindutva ideology has put the Nehruvian ‘scientific temper’ under visible stress.

Hoodbhoy also notes that the recent Indian Science Congress at Mysore had Hindutva scholars blowing ‘conch’ to exercise rectal muscles and claiming that Lord Shiva was the world’s greatest environmentalist.

The Sikh protester, who was thrown out of a Donald Trump rally on Monday, has been identified as a writer and comedian from Iowa, Arish Singh.

A Sikh American, Arish Singh, was escorted out after he unfurled a banner saying 'Stop Hate'.

Mistaking him for a Muslim, Trump mocked at his turban calling  it a "hat", though it is not clear what he meant by that.

After the incident, Arish Singh tweeted saying he was not a Muslim. But you don't have to be  Muslim to stand up against anti-Muslim bigotry, he stated.

Speaking to Daily Mail, he said, since 9/11 attacks on Muslims and Sikhs had increased.

He added he had no problem if Trump thought he was a Muslim,

"We all have to stand with the Muslims and reject the hate that is being directed towards them. How can anybody stand up and say Muslims should be banned from this country?" he asked.

Arish Singh's popular show includes a ventriloquist act with a dummy, who is a white terrorist. The satire is aimed at fellow comedian Jeff Dunham, who uses a dummy labelled Achmed the dead terrorist, to crack offensive jokes at Muslims,

Dunham has angered Sikhs as well as his dummy often sports a turban sacred to Sikhs.

Arish Singh told Daily Mail that Trump was both childish and muttered like an old man, who had no control of what he was saying.

He said he decided to protest as Trump had been attracting support from white supremacists.

Arish Singh has promised to visit Trump during his next rally as well with his now famous banner: Stop Hate.

The crackdown on Bhumata Brigade’s members enroute to Shani Shingnapur temple and the arrest of its leader Trupti Desai has reignited the intolerance debate in the country.

Bhumata Brigade has made repeated attempts to enter Shani Shingnapur temple, where it says the worship practices discriminate against women. Men are allowed to make offerings such as oil while women are prohibited.

Trupti Desai says there is nothing traditional about the ban on women. She says she used to offer oil when she was a child. The prohibition is just a whim of the local villagers, she claims.

The controversy started when a woman jumped on the temple platform, which has Shani idol, in November, and worshipped it. The temple priest purified the platform provoking Bhumata Brigade to step in.

Trupti Desai’s struggle is getting international attention as well.

The Independent recently reported that Trupti Desai’s group of female activists will help bring about a “revolution” against gender inequality in India.

Not much is known abut Bhumata Brigade except that in 2011 it had come out in support of Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign and organised several rallies.

But her activism drew the ire of the Hindu groups on social media, which dismissed her as an AAP agent, who was targeting Hindus.

A French military contingent comprising 124 soldiers became the the first foreign soldiers to take part in the Republic Day parade.

This was not the first time they had marched in the Indian subcontinent. Over 230 years ago they were on active combat duty assisting Tiger of Mysore Tipu Sultan's battle against the British.

Seventy-six French soldiers, who marched on Rajpath on Tuesday, were drawn from the 35th Infantry Regiment of the French Army, which was formerly known as 35 Aquitaine Regiment.

That was the unit which fought the Second Anglo-Mysore War (1780-84) taking Tipu Sultan's side against the British.

The battle saw 12,000 French and Tipu's troops, taking on about 10,600 European and Indian soldiers under the British.

As history records, on June 25, 1783, Mysore lost the battle forcing Tipu to retreat.

According to a Times of India report the French withdrew from the battlefield after 450 of their men were killed or wounded and 150 taken prisoners.

One of those taken prisoner was Jean Baptiste de Bernadotte, who later became the king of Sweden and whose descendants are still nominally in charge.

The Aquitaine Regiment was withdrawn from the Indian subcontinent in 1784 and was to return only in 2016.

The villagers heard her cries and moved in swiftly to rescue her. They made a makeshift rope with their shirts and lowered it down the 30-feet well. As the terrified woman grabbed it, they pulled her up.

A curious onlooker had the presence of mind to pull out his mobile camera and make a video of the incident.

An ABP report says the Austrian tourist, identified as Frieda, had gone to visit the Junagadh fort and slipped while taking a selfie.

She suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

xHamster, a top 75 porn site, celebrated Indian Republic-Day on January 26, by giving a minor tweak to its mascot.

Its cute hamster donned a turban made of the three colours of the Indian flag – Green, White and Saffron.

The US-based adult site’s tribute to visitors from the country shows the growing patronage of the porn sites by Indians.

A recent survey by Porn Hub, the alpha site of porn industry, had found that India sent the most traffic after USA and UK.

As net connectivity spreads in India, a surging number of Indians --  a quarter of them women --  are enjoying porn.

It is also not the first time, xHamster, has flaunted its Indian connection.

When the central government had tried to ban porn sometime ago, it had led a campaign against it urging Indians not to give up.

xHamster had also tweeted quoting Chetan Bhagat and saying ban non-consent, not sex.
