Staff correspondent, August 3, 2015, NewsCrunch

In June, while attending a round table conference on India in London, Shaurya Doval announced that his think tank, India Foundation, would be organising an Indian Economic Convention 2015 in September in New Delhi.

He casually let it slip that PM Modi and his senior ministers would be attending the conference to showcase their policies.

Nobody, who knew Shaurya Doval or India Foundation, was left in any doubt that the conference would be a success.

The Economic Times has reported on the sensational rise of Shaurya Duval, the investment banker son of NSA Ajit Doval.

An alumnus of London School of Business and Chicago University Shaurya Doval runs Indiaunit of an investment fund, Zeus Caps, which puts Saudi money into productive use.

But it is his other role as the director of India Foundation, which he co-founded with RSS leader Ram Madhav, that is keeping him in the limelight. The high-power foundation has Nirmala Sitharaman, Suresh Prabhu, Jayant Sinha and M J Akbar as his other directors.

The profile of India Foundation has been rising in New Delhi along with its activities. It has access, talent and ambition. Speaking to ET Shaurya Doval said the idea was to groom it to play a “…major role in government policy formulation”.

India Foundation holds a closed-door meeting every Wednesday to debate policy. Invitations are extended to the who’s who of power elite – ministers, secretaries and experts. Everyone, reportedly turns up for the meetings, which is shut for the media.

Quoting senior government sources ET said India Foundation was beginning to play the role National Advisory Council had during UPA-1, when it became a source of major policy initiatives – from RTI to MNREGA.

The buzzing rumour that the Government has banned major pornographic sites in India is now officially confirmed.

India Today reports that the ban on porn has been slapped through order no. 813-7/25/2011-DS (Vol.-V). The order passed by the department of Electronics and Information Technology directs the Department of Telecom to notify internet service providers to block access to 857 URLs of adult websites.

The order jumps the gun on the ban as the Supreme Court is hearing as PIL that seeks a ban on porn sites. The Supreme Court recently observed that a ban on pornographic websites would violate the freedom of individuals.

Neera Yadav, Jharkhand’s education minister, described Bihar as a foreign country on Monday during an interaction with the media.

Neera Yadav has sparked off a controversy last month when she paid a floral tribute to former president Kalam when he was still alive.

The memorable moment was captured by the TV cameras and a video footage of her statement is buzzing around.

During an interaction with the press, a reporter asked her a routine question – if any a minister from Jharkhand would go to campaign in Bihar, where elections are due this year.

And pat came Neera Yadav’s reply: “Bihar is our neighbouring country and BJP will campaign there.”

Neera Yadav used the phrase padosi des, whichin colloquial usage may also meana neighbouring region. But you would expect an Education Minister to have a better play with the language.

Neera Yadav had shot into national infamy last month when she had paid shraddanjali to former President Kalam, when he was alive.

Unfortunately, her unwitting prediction  came true and Dr Kalam passed away in less than an week after Neera Yadav’s floral  tribute.

Researchers at the University of Wollongong in Australia are developing new generation condoms which will offer more lifelike experience than the latex condoms currently available in the market.

ABC Net Australia reports that biomedical engineer Dr Robert Gorkin and his team at the University’s Intelligent Polymer Research Institute are tinkering around with hydrogel, which feels like soft contact lens, to make condoms.

Hydrogel, while having similar mechanical properties as rubber, contains mainly water. So being soft and squishy, the condoms made of it will feel more like a second skin unlike the latex condoms, which feel like rubber gloves.

The research team was awarded a research grant last year by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to work on their project.

While their product is yet to be tested and there are manufacturing matters to be sorted out, the researchers say the cost of the new generation condoms would be similar to that of latex condoms.

Creating better condoms to beat latex is on the radar of scientists elsewhere too. Researchers in the US are working using silicone and collagen to achieve exactly what Dr Gorkin and his team are trying to do.

The video hows Shikar Dhawan at his home feeding his son Zorawar from a bowl.

Zorawar is using the family's pet dog's bed as his play bin and the black cuddly cocker spaniel facing an invasion of its territory is restless.

Wearing a T-shirt, shorts and his trademark smile, Shikar Dhawan says he is feeding his son who is standing on the dog's bed. As Shikar Dhawan points out the dog is not very happy about it.

The guy is a natural - Pakistani journalist Chand Nawab has gone viral again with a new video, which shows him spanking a boy on live camera.

Chand Nawab's earlier viral video provided inspiration for Nawaz Siddiqui's Pakistani journalist role in hit Salman Khan movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

In the new video, Chand Nawab is back in his favourite city, Karachi, looking older and greyer.

He seems to be reporting on a local poll and is reeling out numbers from a scribbled note held in his left hand.

A boy, who is probably witnessing the live reporting, decides to get a better view and gets closer. As he comes between Chand Nawab and the camera, the top edge of his head appears in the frame.

A clearly irritated Chand Nawab stops reporting and slaps the boy's head a few times and pushes it away.

He also scolds the cameraman and asks him to pan and capture more of the background.

In the first viral video, which inspired Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Chand Nawab was seen reporting on the Eid-time rush at the Karachi railway station.

Reporting from an overbridge of the Railway station, he was seen dodging and tackling passengers who were coming in the way.

For those angry with porn ban, a symbol of protest at Khajuraho

Protstng porn ban - Khajuraho violates modern interpretation of Indian culture
Staff correspondent, August 4, 2015, NewsCrunch

Though the ban on porn has unfolded over the last two or three days, there were some clues that this was coming. In November Telecom Minister Ravishankar Prasad had said porn was anti-Indian culture.

Nothing exposes the hollowness of this argument as the temple erotic art, which dates back to thousands of years, and are as intrinsic to Indian heritage as the four vedas are.

For many upset about the porn ban in India, the magnificent erotic art at Khajuraho is emerging as a symbol of protest against unwarranted moral policing by the government.

A few users at Reddit had proposed to trend a hashtag #Khajuraho to protest the online ban.

Firstpost said Indians were angry at the government move and are looking for an Anna Hazare to rally them. If anyone tries to do that the Khajuraho sculptures would come handy.

The Khajuraho temples feature a variety of art work, of which 10% is sexual art, depicted both outside and inside the temples.

Scholars are divided over why ancient Indians brought erotica to their places of worship. Some say these are tantric sexual practices and some infuse deep symbolisms to them.

Most plausibly, ancient Indians saw life as composed of secular and spiritual elements, where everything had its place, including sex, and was  nothing to be ashamed of. Indian culture was open, receptive and middle-path.

It is that lesson which is lost on its modern proponents.

Chayan Sarkar, a reporter who wrote extensively on allegations of extortion and illegal activities by some Trinamul Congress members has gone missing since the night of August 2, 2015.

He was a regular contributor to the ‘Uttar Banga Sambad’ daily in northern Bengal.

The Telegraph reports that Chayan Sarkar was traveling to Alipurduar to share his experiences on the backlash that followed his reporting, in a street corner meeting organized by a human rights group.

A few days ago before he went missing, he had been attacked and threatened at this own home, allegedly by Trinamul Chhatra Parishad members.

Chayan Sarkar had complained to the police about this, but not all persons named in the FIR had been arrested. So he had planned to go on a hunger strike in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police.

Eight of the nine people named in the FIR were arrested and later released on bail, following Sarkar’s disappearance.

Sourav Chakraborty, the Alipurduar district Trinamul president, has said the party was in no way connected to any of these issues.

Kamlesh Vaswani, the 43-year-old Indorelawyer, who filed a PIL in the Supreme Court against porn, is happy that his years-long struggle is finally bearing fruit.

While he welcomes the blocking of 857 sites, he feels it is not enough.

Speaking to Huffpost Kamlesh Vaswani says he has compiled a list of 5,000 to 6,000 sites which he will soon submit for blocking.

He is also getting ready to submit shocking child porn videos to Supreme Court, which is due to hear his petition coming Monday.

While the ban on porn has become controversial, Kamlesh Vaswani is convinced that it is in national interest. Adult sites fuel sexual assault on women and children, he says.

An article he read in 2012 in The Hinduthat Indian Army was facing a shortage of officers was the trigger in his anti-porn crusade.

"I felt that there was very little positive contribution of the youth in India... They only care about porn," Kamlesh Vaswani says.

Soccer Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo pulled a successful prank on the residents of Madrid and sent a video viralling furiously on Tuesday.

In the video, Ronaldo is dressed up by professional makeup artists as a homeless man. Sporting fake hair and fat suit he is totally unrecognizable.

He goes with a borrowed dog to the Plaza de Callao in downtown Madrid,
and starts demonstrating his kick-ups to earn a few euros. Hours pass and people ignore him, till a young boy joins in to spar.

After kicking around the ball, Ronaldo picks it up and signs it. As the mildly curious boy watches, the football star starts unpeeling his makeup, revealing himself.

There are shrieks, mobile cameras come out and a flash mob is formed around the star.

It is not clear why Ronaldo took the trouble – seems to be a just a professionally done prank on the city where he lives.

The world’s most popular adult site X Videos generated a huge buzz after it took a dig at the Modi government’s porn ban in India.

In a message it tweeted on Monday it called upon Indians to vote better next time – hinting that they had elected a wrong moral policing government.

It also gave a link to an Independent article on Indian government’s decision to block adult sites in the country.

XVideos, a free pornographic video sharing service, was one of the 857 websites, which was banned by the government.

It overtook Pornhub to become the popular adult video sharing website in November 2010.

According to Alexa, XVideos has been one of the 50 most popular websites on the Internet since early 2013, and currently has about 350 million monthly visitors.

The response to XVideos’ vote better tweet was varied. Some took umbrage that a porn site had the gall to tell them how to vote. Many took it as fun and used the occasion to engage in the general chatter around porn ban.

Salman Khan’s father, writer Salim Khan, has reminded his detractors that his roots are actually in Afghanistan; so if they want him to leave India, they should ask him to go there rather than Pakistan.

Actor Salman Khan came under severe criticism from all quarters in late July for his tweets that it was Tiger Memon who should actually be put to gallows, not Yakub Memon.

Persuaded by his father, he soon retracted, apologised and even deleted his tweets.

Salim Khan’s defense of his son soon resulted in the usual – critics and protesters asking him to leave India and go to Pakistan.

Mid Day reports that during an education event Salim Khan reminded the protesters who had gathered that his ancestors had migrated from Afghanistan in pursuit of better education and life. They settled in Indore, Madhya Pradesh and later migrated to Mumbai. Salim Khan was the fourth generation of his family living in India.

With that, perhaps with gentle sarcasm, he corrected them that they should actually ask him to leave for Afghanistan.

It is not just with Salman Khan, Afghanistan's connection with Bollywood runs deep.

Aamir Khan's ancestors came from Heart and settled in Mumbai. Aamir is related to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan and Pakistani singer-actor, Ali Zafar.

Shah Rukh Khan's paternal grandfather came from Afghanistan to settle in Delhi.

Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Kadar Khan, Amjad Khan, Farah Khan, Kabir Khan, are among those who can boats of Afghan connection.

Actress Sonam Kapoor was trolled heavily on Tuesday after she came out strongly against the  short-lived porn ban in he country.

The Government of India, which placed an informal ban on porn on Saturday rolled it back on Tuesday evening, but not before it faced a barrage of criticism on the issue.

While the usually talkative Bollywood celebs kept mum on the issue, with the exception of RGV, Sonam Kapoor,  came with both her swords swinging.

Banning things was not going to make any difference to Indian mentality she tweeted, adding that the 'idiots' who banned should be banned.

She also tagged her tweet with a few provocative hashtags - #ashamed, #sick, #nextbanidea.

For staunch supporters of the government and porn ban, this amounted to double blasphemy. She had not only called the pro-ban elements idiots, but had also used used the most outrageous hashtags.

So, over the last 24 hours,  trolls have been at work, haunting her,  ofering advise, criticism and abuse. Here is a sample:

Two trains, Kamayani Express and Janata Express, derailed on Tuesday night while crossing the Machak river near Harda in Madhya Pradesh.

Harda is about 160 kms from state capital Bhopal. An animation video developed by India TV shows how the twin accidents may have occurred.

The Varanasi-bound Kamayani Express and the Jabalpur-bound Janata Express derailed after 11 pm Tuesday night.

According to media reports, heavy rains triggered a flash flood that washed away the base material underlying train tracks.

The engine and the first few coaches of the Kamayani Express managed to pass the weakened structure, which gave in and derailed the following seven coaches.  Janata Express' engine and the three coaches derailed when it attempted to cross the flooded tracks.

Bodies of 24 passengers have been recovered and 300 passengers have been rescued. The toll is likely to go up as many are seriously injured.

The animation video, which depicts the derailment of the Kamayani Express, shows water-level raising dramatically  after the engine crosses the track. This scenario may not be factually correct, though only detailed reports may throw light on what really happened.

After gaining 30 kgs for his role in Dangal over a year, Aamir Khan will have a mere four months to lose all that before he continues to shoot the second leg of the same movie.

After PK released,  Aamir Khan went on a diet and workout plan to gain weight, which he will need for the first leg of Dangal shooting scheduled between September and December this year.

DNA reported that for the second leg of the shooting, which will start in May 2016, Aamir Khan will have to shed all the new bulk and get back to his  Dhoom 3 look.

Speaking to DNA, the famed actor said he would get only  four months to get back to nine per cent body fat.

Many have expressed concern on the effect  of the bulking up and slimming down on the actor's health. Though some have even accused him of using steroids, it is not the first time he is transforming his physique.

He built  a strapping six-pack body for Ghajini (video below) and slimmed down quickly to start work on his next movie, 3 Idiots.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal is a biopic based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Phogat, the father of Indian women wrestlers Geeta and Babita Kumari Phogat, popularly referred to as "the Phogat sisters."

Ninety school children in Bihar’s Kaimur district have refused their scholarships and uniform allowances, and asked for a boat instead.

The students are forced to swim across the river that separates them from their school every day.

The Telegraph reports the ordeal of the children, for whom everything about attending the school, from the need to leave early to make it on time to taking precautions to keep their books dry; from changing wet clothes to missing classes during the monsoons, is a challenge.

The acting principal of the school has said that the students refused to accept their scholarships despite his best attempts to persuade them to do so.

In 2014, the National Human Rights Commission had issued a notice to Gujarat government over similar media reports, of 125 tribal children swimming across a river, to reach their school.

The Commission had observed that if media reports were correct, it raised serious issues of violation of right to life of children who had to swim across the river, and the right to education of those not attending the school because of this problem.

Gujarati television channel TV 9 had aired a report on this topic in 2013.

Abu Thahir hopes that more Indians will join Jihad

Staff correspondent, August 5, 2015, NewsCrunch

A former Kerala journalist Abu Thahir, now with ISIS, maintains a Facebook page, where he posts propaganda material in Malayalam.

He recently posted a message recently comparing PM Modi with Syrian President Bashar.

Alleging that Syrians were bombing children, he said Bashar and Modi were equal, it’s only that they were not born to same parents.

The News Minute has accessed Abu Thahir’s Facebook page and published its excerpts.

In his Facebook posts Abu Thahir hopes that more Indians will join Jihad, chain the leaders of the present government and take to the streets.

Abu Thahir’s social media activities also belie the reports that the Palakkad journalist had died a few months ago while serving his ISISmasters.

The Intelligence Bureau and the Kerala police have concluded that Abu Thahir is now with ISIS.

The twenty-four-year-old Abu Thahir left his home two years ago to join his father in Qatar. However, he instead  reached Syria and made his way to ISIS.

A graduate in sociology from Malappuram, Abu Thahir, was the local correspondent of Thejas, a Malayalam daily run by the Popular Front of India (PFI).

The Hindu spoke to Thejas executive editor N.P. Chekkutty who said Abu Thahir was not a confirmed staffer of the daily. He may have worked on a temporary basis and that too for a short duration, said Chekkutty.
