If India's richest temple at Tirupati was a corporate entity, it would have been vying for a Forbes listing.
The coming financial year, Tirumala Tirupati temple expects to earn a total revenue of Rs 2,678 crore. So, where does its money comes from:
1) Hundi or the offering box is the top contributor. Over two crore devotees may donate Rs 1,010 crore to the temple.
2) Money deposited in nationalised banks will earn an interest of Rs 757 crore.
3) Rental from shops, restaurants and lodges owned by the temple - Rs 247 crore.
5) 'Laddu prasadam' expected to account for Rs 175 crore
6) From sale of human hair of devotees who get their heads tonsured - Rs 150 crore
PTI reports that the Tirumala Tirupati temple projects to spend Rs 981 crore on salaries, outsourcing expenses, engineering works and for propagation of Hindu Dharma. So, its earnings before tax would be nearly Rs 1,700 crore, making it hugely profitable.
But if the temple had been corporate entity, it would have been worried as its income is stagnating.
Last year, Tirumala Tirupati temple had projected an income of Rs 2,530. This year there has been just a small growth of Rs 148 crores.
