Facebook would be wishing that its board member Marc Andreessen had not come out in support of Free basics, which has been rejected by India.

In a tweet laced with sarcasm, Andreessen pointed out on Wednesday that anti-colonialism had been economically catastrophic for the Indian people for decades.

“Why stop now?” he asked.

He probably wanted to say that the protectionist policy India followed after colonial rule has been economically catastrophic. He wanted Indians to open up by embracing Free Basics.

But he ended up implying that Indians were economically unwise to follow anti-colonial policies. He also managed to compare Facebook to a coloniser and came out urging Indians to acquiesce to its prescriptions.

The smartest man in Silicon Valley had got it horribly wrong. After Indians trolled him, Andreessen was forced to clarify that he was not supporting colonialism.

Let is also be placed on record that Andreessen a hugely influential VC has been a known backer of Indian tech entrepreneurs in the US.

Soon after Lance Naik Hanumanthappa was admitted to the Army RR Hospital’s ICU ward in New Delhi on Tuesday, Modi visited him, accompanied by senior Army officers and a camera man.

A video tweeted by ANI shows him standing beside Hanumanthappa’s ICU bed listening to the brief by the Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh.

The response to Modi’s quick visit to Hanumanthappa’s ICU bed was mixed.

Some felt it would boost the morale of the soldier fighting for his life.

But there were also tweets, which said Modi by taking a camera man along with him, was treating the tragedy as a photo opportunity.

They pointed out that the video footage was carefully orchestrated with the camera taking care not to show Hanumanthappa and focus only on Modi.

Some also felt that by barging into the ICU without protective gear Modi and team had made Hanumanthappa vulnerable to infections.

A cow elephant went on a rampage at Siliguri in West Bengal after straying in from a nearby forest.

The aggressive animal, which had bruises all over its body, destroyed nearly 50 buildings and crushed an unspecified number of vehicles as well.

The mob frenzy, which followed it, added to its temper as it went methodically on its destruction spree.

The Forest personnel took seven hours to tranquilise the elephant; the first tranquiliser dart hit its mark but failed to have any effect.

Police had to use water cannons to keep the crowd away from the elephant, which was successfully tranquilise in the second attempt.

The forest department officials, who have taken custody of the elephant, said they would examine and release it in the forest.

It is rare for a cow elephant to get so aggressive; unlike bulls, which go through musth or periodical surges in testosterone.

Many local experts blamed the rampage on the shrinking habitat of animals, which is stressing and forcing them into human settlements.

There is an Indian-origin editor, Amol Rajan, behind The Independent's decision to call Mumbai Bombay.

Rajan has been a  vocal critic of PM Modi and of the rise of Hindutva nationalism in India.

As the controversial Mumbai-Bombay change in The Independent style guide went public, Rajan spoke to BBC explaining the rationale behind his decision.

India has two traditions, an open and pluralistic one laid down by the founding fathers - Ambedkar, Nehru, Patel and Gandhi.

There is also a nasty closed nationalistic tradition represented by BJP and Shiv Sena.

By reverting to Bombay, The Independent  hopes to remind Indians that they are better off remaining open and tolerant. If you opt for Mumbai, you are colluding with nationalists to close Bombay to the world, he says.

He acknowledges that Mumbai is the Marathi name for the city and points out that his mother is from Pune.

Rajan was born in Calcutta and shifted to the UK when he was three years. He joined The Independent in 2006 and rose to become its editor in six years flat.

At 33, Rajan is one if the youngest editors in the UK.

Water is precious and US Geological Survey has released a photo and some data to drive it home.

If you can manage to put all the water in the world, it would form a sphere of just 1,384 km wide.

This would like a small blue marble if laced next to the sphere we call Earth.

Now, mind you, oceans account for 96.5 percent of all Earth’s water. That makes only 2.5 percent of total water drinkable.

The sphere for fresh liquid water would be just 273 km in diameter.
