A photo of senior opposition politicians Ghulam Nabi Azad,  D Raja and Anand Sharma peering at Arun Jaitley’s  iPhone had tested social media’s imagination on Tuesday.

The leaders had come together after a meeting called by PM Modi to discuss the upcoming budget session of the Parliament.

The opposition leaders used the opportunity to raise the crackdown on JNU, whose students have been accused of antinational behaviour.

After the meeting as Union Minister Venkiah Naidu briefed the media, Azad, Raja, Sharma and Jaitley struck a conversation and were seen gesticulating in disagreement. It was when Jaitley pulled out his iPhone and showed something that looked like a video clip.

Social media spent the afternoon trying to guess what the leaders had seen on the phone.

NDTV reported that the four leaders had argued if anti-India slogans had been really raised at the JNU campus.

It was when Jaitley pulled out his iPhone and showed a clip of JNU students allegedly shouting anti-national slogans.

NDTV said it based its report on one of the four leaders in the photo.  Knowing the Jaitley’s proximity to media, no prizes for zeroing in on the source.

The NDTV report also noted that after seeing the video, Jaitley looked triumphant and the other leaders a bit lost.

But PTI quoted SFI and other student leaders saying the person was a fringe element and did not represent the mainstream,an argument usually given by the right-wing groups to explain extreme actions of some of their members.

Other slogans focused on JNU, Kashmir and Manipur seeking freedom from RSS and Modi.

The Jadavpur University students rally was criticised by both left and right parties.

The BJP government in Maharashtra has roped in Bollywood actor Aamir Khan to promote a flagship programme to check farmers' suicide in the state.

The decision follows PM Modi's surprise invite to Aamir Khan, for Make In India's official dinner, in Mumbai on February 13.

CM Devendra Fadnavis is likely to make a formal announcement on Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan, a rural programme to address water scarcity in 5,000 villages.

Fadnavis is also likely to talk about the actor's role in promoting efficient water management practices in farming.

The Hindu quoted Aamir Khan saying he had been in touch with the Maharashtra government on the project for over a year. Fadnavis may have decided to move ahead to rope in the actor after the signal from Modi to stop targeting Aamir Khan.

Besides attending the Make In India dinner, Aamir Khan was also scheduled to recite a poem on peace at a cultural show, which was called off after fire broke out on stage.

After Aamir Khan made his controversial remark on intolerance,  he had become a pariah for the ruling establishment. He had said that due to rising intolerance, his wife Kiran had thought of moving out of the country to raise their son Azad.

A backlash quickly followed and he was removed as brand ambassador for Incredible India. The storm was so severe e-commerce firm Snap Deal pulled out his advertisements and decided not to renew him as its brand ambassador.

Taking dig at Aamir Khan became a favourite past-time for BJP supporters.

Two weeks ago, Union Minister Venkiah Naidu said that he was personally hurt by Aamir Khan's remarks.

But by involving Aamir Khan in Make In India, Modi sent a message to his party men to stop invoking the intolerance controversy.

Modi has stepped in the past as well to rein in his party men. After the  Hyderabad University student Rohit Vemula committed suicide, Hyderabad BJP members and even senior party leaders had attacked him as an anti national.

They backed off only after Modi mourned Rohit Vemula's death as a loss to the country.

But their joy was short-lived as the ceremonial rendition of the Nepal National Anthem was inexplicably cut off in the middle.

The incident created anger in Nepal, a proud nation, which feels touchy when comes to its ties with India, often seen as an overbearing neighbour.

A video of the song from an upcoming film, Ishq Forever, was leaked on social media.

It showed Sonu Nigam in a studio, giving his voice to the melody, which has also been sung by Shreya Ghoshal.

Mumbai Mirror reports that Zee Music has replaced Sonu's voice with Javed Ali in Ishq Ki Barish. The filmmakers were reportedly keen on Sonu Nigam, but were helpless as Zee Music had acquired the rights for the songs.

It is rumoured that someone not happy with Zee’s decision leaked the Sonu Nigam version of Ishq Ki Barish.

Sonu Nigam told Mirror that he had been earlier dropped from the chart-topping "Gulabo" as well.

Harish Nanjappa, a 23-year-old employee of a private firm in Bangalore, was cut into two in a horrific accident but showed the presence of mind to donate his organs.

A deeply disturbing video shows him lying on the NH 4 ; his torso and head in the middle of the road, while the lower part of the body is at a distance.

He can be seen gesticulating onlookers pointing at his head. He later told the paramedics in the ambulance that he wished to donate his eyes.

He succumbed to his injuries within minutes of being taken to a nearby government hospital at Nelamangala.

Dr Bhujang Shetty of Narayana Netralaya told reporters his eyes were not damaged as he was wearing a helmet.

While his eyes will gift life to two individuals, his other organs were too damaged to be harvested.

Harish Nanjappa was returning to Bangalorefrom his hometown Gubbi on Tuesday morning when the mishap occurred.

He lost his balance when a truck scraped his bike near Thippagondanahalli and unfortunately came under its wheels.

Though earlier media reports said Harish Nanjappa was lying unattended for nearly 30 minutes, police said an ambulance reached him in 8 minutes.

Police have booked the driver of the lorry for death due to negligence and rash driving.‪

Ravish Kumar hints Arnab Goswami is stifling freedom of speech by labelling others as anti-Indian (video below)

February 17, 2016, NewsCrunch

Most Indian journalists are upset with the Times Now editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami, whose hyper-nationalistic rhetoric, they say, is hurting press freedom.

After the controversy of JNU allegedly students shouting  anti-national slogans broke out, AG has been targeting them as ant-nationals. The academics and journalists, who are advocating a nuanced approach, have also come under his attack.

When the journalists went on a protest march in New Delhi to protest the attacks on them, he was the only known face who was missing.

In an interview with Newslaundry’s Madhu Trehan NDTV journalist Ravish Kumar sums up why he and his colleagues are upset with Arnab Goswami, though without naming him.

He says anchors, who label others as anti-Indian and are stifling freedom of speech. They are also polarising the audience with their shrill us and them style of debates.

These armchair anchors pick up frivolous issues and ignore the ones that truly affect the common man. 'When was the last time such anchors visited places where people are dying of thirst and hunger?' he asks.

So, what is the solution? People should stop watching debates on TV, says Ravish Kumar.

Nguyen Thi Hue was caught in 2012 in a major anti-drug
crackdown by the Vietnamese officials.
February 17, 2016, NewsCrunch

Nguyen Thi Hue, 42, a female prisoner in Vietnam, who was sentenced to death in 2014 on a drug trafficking charge, has escaped gallows by smartly getting pregnant.

She is due to give birth in two months and according to Vietnamese law, women convicts with children of less than three years of age cannot be executed.

Her sentence in all probability would be commuted to life imprisonment in a jail in the Quang Ninh province of the country.

What has made a splash in the Vietnamese media is the way she went about getting pregnant.

She reportedly got into a deal with a male prisoner last August to buy his semen for nearly Rs 1,50,000.  The deal was made possible as both were inmates at a  mixed prison.

The male inmate, Nguyen Tuan Hung,  27, reportedly dropped his sperm in plastic bags at a hiding place in the jail.

She collected the bags and used a syringe to impregnate herself. It reportedly took two attempts to achieve the objective.

While the story ends well for her, four prison guards have been suspended, reports The Daily Mail.

Nguyen Thi Hue used to smuggle drugs from China. She was caught in 2012 in a major anti-drug crackdown by the Vietnamese officials.

A TV grab of Kanhaiya  Kumar in Patiala House Court. He was beaten back-to-back
as the police watched

February 18, 2016, NewsCrunch

JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was so badly beaten up and was so shaken he pissed in his pants.

The Telegraph notes that after he was kicked and punched viciously inside Patiala House complex, "...urine stained the young man's trousers."

Delhi Police Commissioner Bassi dismissed that there was any assault. Kanhaiya was merely jostled by an excited crowd, he claimed.

But this is what The Telegraph correspondent saw and reported.

When Kanhaiya was brought to the Court around 10 lawyers pounced on him and had a free run for several minutes...

They punched and kicked Kanhaiya all over his body. A large crowd of lawyers egged them on, mouthing expletive after expletive.

But there was no let-up and soon the stain appeared on his trousers. It was then that the policemen threw a security ring around him.

That was not the end of the ordeal for Kanhaiya.

Half an hour later, he was beaten up again when he was seated in a room inside the court and was waiting for the magistrate. A man in black clothes reportedly barged in and punched and kicked him in his abdomen and pulled his hair in the presence of policemen.

The attacks took place in defiance of a detailed Supreme Court directive to Delhi Police to ensure full security at the hearing.

The same assailants had attacked JNU teachers, students and journalists in the same court complex less than 48 hours ago.

February 18, 2016, NewsCrunch

On the day of its launch the "world's cheapest smartphone" Freedom 251 was hit with negative press and social media scepticism.

Freedom 251 made a splash as it took full page advertisements in leading dailies and was formally launched by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.  Veteran BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi was also on stage as did the phone maker Ringing Bells founder and director Mohit Kumar Goel.

Goel said Prime Minister Modi’s Make In India campaign was an inspiration for the product,

The phone, which sells for Rs 251 + Rs 40 for shipping, promises a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM, a 4-inch display, and a rear and front cam.

But here is why Freedom 251, a smartphone at Rs 251 may be too good to be true.

1) The cheapest dubious phones in the market have a starting price of Rs 1,500. As DNA points out even using the cheapest components would have taken the cost price of Freedom 251 to Rs 1,000.

So, there is no information why Freedom 251 is being sold at such a huge loss.

Does the phone come with a locked in data plan the way iPhone is sold in the US?

This is unlikely, as Freedom 251 is being targeted at the low-income users, which is not an attractive segment for telecom companies to offer lock-in deals.

2) It is still not clear how Freedom 251 looks like. Some say in its official photo, Freedom 251 looks like Smart 101, another phone sold by Ringing Bell. Others say the photos on the website and newspaper advertisements were different.

3) The Hindustan Times says the review device of Freedom 251 they received featured branding of an another company, Adcom.  Adcom, an IT product importer, said they had no idea that Ringing Bells was sending their phone for review.

4) If you do manage to get hold of Freedom 251, do not count on the support. The numbers listed on the website do  not work, said India Today.  A reporter of the publication paid a personal visit to the Ringing Bells office at Sector 63 Noida on Wednesday.

On the day of the high-profile launch, the office was deserted except for a security guard.

5) Freedom 251 went on sale this morning. Many optimistic souls, who tried to book it online, failed to do so.  The common complaint was that  the address page kept on refreshing, asking them  to enter their details again and again.

They also found that the company may take as many as four months to deliver the product.

Cricketer Shane Warne was bitten by an aggressive but non-venmous anaconda while shooting for a reality TV show in  South Africa.

Anaconda bites are a serious affair as besides the inhuman strength they have 100 rear-facing teeth. So, being bitten by one is like getting struck by 100 hypodermic needles at once, 'news.com.au' reported.

The cricketer is said to be safe but under medical supervision.

Warne was performing a series of dangerous stunts for the show 'I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!'

He had to dip his head into glass cases containing different animals – rats, African clawed frogs, scorpions, Madagascan hissing cockroaches and snakes.

Warne is seen in a video putting his head into the case with rats and then into the case of snakes, when the anaconda struck.

The scent of rat on Warne’s face may have tempted anaconda to strike out at its favourite snack.

Union HRD Minister placed a call to Times Now during live News Hour show to console Maj Gen G D Bakshi who broke down after losing his cool during a debate on national flag.

The News Hour guests led by anchor Arnab Goswami were debating on the central government's decision to hoist Indian flag at all central universities.

Supreme Court advocate Shabnam Lone and  JD (U) leader Ajay Alok questioned the timing of the government decision, which comes in the wake of the ''anti-national'' controversy in JNU.

This angered fellow debate guest Maj Gen G D Bakshi, a highly decorated Army veteran. He said   hundreds  of Indian soldiers had died to keep the piece of silk fluttering, referring to the Tri-colour.

Saying that Shabnam Lone had a smile on her face as he spoke, he lost his temper and offered to withdraw from what he called a disgusting debate, but was pacified by Arnab Goswami.

In another segment of the debate, he said, Indian soldiers had been left to cry on their own as nobody cared for their sacrifice any more and broke down.

That prompted a call from Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, who said she was calling as a citizen and not as a minister.

She said it was the nation's tragedy to see tears in the eyes of men like G D Bakshi. She said the nation would be grateful for ever for the sacrifices of people like him.

Rapper Hard Kaur was caught on camera at a recent event abusing Sunny Leone in public.

A video which has gone viral shows her striking some sexy poses to the media, which she followed up with an unprovoked abuse on Sunny Leone.

The porn star turned Bollywood actor Sunny Leone is not exactly popular with celebs such as Hard Kaur and Rakhi Savant, probably due to professional rivalry.

Though they frequently take digs at her, none have so far had resorted to an open abuse.

Hard Kaur was reportedly drunk when she made the statement. She has been in controversy earlier as well thanks to her alleged weakness for the drink. She turned up for a show late last year, allegedly drunk, and created a ruckus.

Besides controversies, Hard Kaur is also known for rap hits such as 'Move Your Body’ from Johnny Gaddar, ‘Talli’ from Ugly Aur Pagli, ‘Laung Da Lashkara’ and ‘Rola Pe Gaya’ from ‘Patiala House’.
