Rohan Murty seems to have rejected a petition to remove noted academic Sheldon Pollock as the general editor of the Murty Classic Library of India.

The Murty Classic Library of India is publishing Indian classics from various languages with the help of a $5 million fund from former Infosys chairman Narayana Murthy’s son Rohan Murty.

Pollock, a noted Sanskrit scholar, teaches at ColumbiaUniversity.

Over 100 academics, mostly from India, have written to Rohan Murty urging him to drop Pollock, who they say is not "politically neutral".

The petition cites a 2012 lecture delivered by Pollock at HeidelbergUniversity's South Asia Institute. In the lecture, the petitioners allege that Pollock echoes the contemptuous views of Macaulay and Max Weber on the Indian shastras. However, their interpretation of the lecture has been challenged by many academics.

When The Telegraph contacted Rohan Murty, he reportedly forwarded the full text of the 2012 lecture.

"This is the data that will demonstrate the truth. Please read the actual speech to see what was actually said," Rohan wrote to The Telegraph in an email.

In the speech titled "What is South Asian Knowledge Good For? Pollock disagrees with Macaulay’s contention that Indian languages and knowledge were useless and false, notes the newspaper.

But Rohan’s stand does not seem to have gone down well with petitioners.

One of them, Ramesh C Bhardwaj, reportedly told The Telegraph that "like-minded academicians" would oppose any effort to supply the Murty Classic Library's books to public libraries in India.

"It is our national duty to prevent these books from reaching public libraries. These books give misleading interpretation about Indian heritage," Bhardwaj was quoted saying by The Telegraph.

Bhardwaj is the head of Sanskrit department at the DelhiUniversity. K Ramasubramanian from IIT Bombay, Sanskrit scholar V. Kutumba Sastry and former chief election commissioner N Gopalaswami are among other signatories of the petition.

The petition seeking the removal of Sheldon Pollock as Chief Editor of Murty Classical Library has received over 13,000 signatures on Change.org.

The petitioners have also sought an element of "Swadeshi Indology" in the Murty Classical Library. They had asked the project to reflect 'Make in India' ethos and not be outsourced wholesale to American Ivy Leagues.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi delivered his funniest speech ever in Parliament slamming Modi government on a wide range of issues.

He labelled the new window to declare black money as fair and lovely scheme; the Make in Indialion mascot was called Babber Sher.

When he slipped on ‘Rs 35 per barrel oil’ he apologised saying he made mistakes as he was not from RSS.

He had the ruling party members on their feet when he said Gandhi was ‘ours’ as Savarkar was ‘yours’.  When the BJP MPs protested his remark he asked if they were disowning Savarkar.

There were also multiple jibes at PM Modi, whom he described as very powerful, though with sarcasm. He advised BJP MPs to speak a little more in Modi’s presence.

The 20 minute speech was laced with humour. A smiling Rahul Gandhi delivered his rehearsed lines well, much to the amusement of the Congress members who thumped their desks in approval.

Though a budget-time speech, he strayed into various issues including MNREGA, JNU and Rohith Vemula. Watch for laughs.

Rohan Murty picks strong words to ridicule online petition – says Sheldon Pollock will stay at classical library for years

March 3, 2016, NewsCrunch

Harvard scholar Rohan Murty has rejected an online petition to replace American Indologist Sheldon Pollock as the editor of classical library.

Murty Classical Library of India (MCLI) was launched by Rohan Murty with an endowment of $5.2 million in 2010.

A petition at change.org has over 13,000 signatures; over 130 noted academics are behind the campaign to oust Sheldon Pollock.

NewsCrunch had noted on Wednesday that Rohan Murty had decided to stand by Sheldon Pollock.  But, he chose surprisingly harsh words to trash the petitioners, according to a report published by The Economic Times on Thursday.

He was categorical in rejecting the demand to oust Sheldon Pollock. “Pollock has been critical to the success of the library, and Harvard and I look forward to having him on board for many years to come," he said.

He challenged the petitioners to point out problems in the books released by MCLI instead of just saying it was a ‘conspiracy’.

“I want to hear in which book we have published, in which line or page there is a problem, and in what context, and why," said Murty.

Deciding to hold noting back, Rohan Murty said "I doubt if these people have read even a single book that we have published.”

He further ridiculed the petitioners for sitting in a ‘peanut gallery’ and throwing “empty shells” at those doing the hard work.

The petitioners say Sheldon Pollock had a delivered a biased lecture against Indian classics at HeidelbergUniversity. They are also upset that he had signed a petition in support of JNU students.  They would like to have someone committed to swadeshi Indology at the helm of MCLI, rather than outsourcing it to American academics.

The controversy in JNU has triggered an intellectual churn, and drawn many activists and scholars to the campus.

Legal scholar Lawrence Liang gave a brilliant speech in JNU on February 28.

He dissected the way Indian courts have handled sedition down the decades. The upshot: It would take a real stretch of imagination to pin the charge on JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar.

But he went on to warn JNU students that in the history of freedom of speech and expression, these rights are not granted by courts. They merely affirm what’s there.

Rights are born out of individual social struggles usually in extremely charged political moments where nation and nationalism are debated to the core.

He cautioned students not to rely only on judiciary to secure their rights. There is a long history of judgments taking extremely conservative positions.

Lawrence Liang cited a case against Bal Thackeray that was filed after 1992 Mumbai blasts. The Shiv Sena leader was booked under 295 A for inciting hatred against Muslims.

The Mumbai High Court, made a regressive distinction between ordinary Muslims and those who were traitors, according to Lawrence Liang.

It got Bal Thackeray off the hook by saying 295A did not apply to members of the community, who were traitors.

There is a real danger in relying solely on courts as some kind of saviours of the right the dissent.

In the present political climate where the debate is polarised, judiciary may create its own discourse of nationalism and anti-nationalism.

But there is hope. As Lawrence Liang shows the evolution of rights is a glorious history of youngsters leading dissent and pressing for freedom of speech and expression.

The West Bengal student, Sataparna Mukherjee, who said she had won a Nasa scholarship has been found to have made false claims.

She claimed that she had proposed a Black Hole theory, which she posted on a Nasa website, and which in turn offered her a scholarship to study astrobiology and English literature at Oxford.

It was a string of lies, which has been called out. For complete details of her claims and point-by-point rebuttal, we recommend Huff Post.

Huff Post also has an exclusive official denial from Goddard Institute for Space Studies of Nasa saying they have not given any scholarship to any student called Sataparna.

We also recommend The Wire for a short  rebuttal of her claims.

Sataparna is 18, in her 12th standard. She lied and which teen does not.

Her parents should realise that they have been taken for a ride by her. They should cut off her TV and mobile phone for two weeks.

That is what she should be subjected to, not investigative journalism.

More guilty in this episode is media – so many swallowed her claims, fed on each other and published without verification.

DNA, Times of India, Mumbai Mirror, Zee News, The Better India, Deccan Chronicle, Hindustan Times – you name it, they all fell for it.

Why did not any reporter or editor feel the need to get a little more probing and end the story with a laugh. Do all stories go through a similar editorial rigour – the nation wants to know.

We do hope that Sataparna gets on with her life and goes to achieve some of the things she has been dreaming  about.

JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar got a roaring hero's welcome at JNU after his release from Tihar jail on Thursday evening.

JNU students, faculty and other staff were in full force to welcome Kanhaiya, who was thrown into jail for two weeks on sedition charges.

They roared azadi, which as Kanhaiya clarified later, was not from India but within India.

The police ported him away from Tihar secretly, anxious not to create a media event.   But media followed Kanhaiya. The welcome he received and the  speech he made achieved exactly what the police sought to avoid.

Kanhaiya Kumar to prison officials - I will be back

In his brief stint at Tihar jail JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar seems to have won over  the prison officials to his cause.

Officials say they were initially hostile to him as they had also fallen for the doctored videos. But after interacting with the student leader they changed their opinion and began to agree with him.

They say working for a society free from hunger, communalism, caste and class exploitation, as Kanhaiya says, is true nationalism.

They also agree that a hungry man has no use for empty patriotic slogans.

The Telegraph spoke to several Tihar officials on Kanhaiya's stay at Tihar.

One of the officials said his son was doing masters in Delhi University and wanted to join JNU for his PhD. "He shares the same thoughts as Kanhaiya and does it make him also an anti-national," the official asked.

Another official went to the extent of calling Kanhaiya "the new hope in these depressing times" of divisive politics.

It also helped that Kanhaiya gave tips on getting their children to crack JNU entrance.

Best of all, they recalled Kanhaiya's parting shot: "I shall continue to fight and will therefore keep coming back."
