People don’t seem to have had enough of former President Kalam or what he stood for.

An old photo of his elder brother Mohammed Muthu Meera Lebbai Maraicker sitting in an umbrella repairing shop has gone viral.

In the public record, which is available on the Kalam family,  there is no information if Maraicker, who is 99 years now, worked at an umbrella shop to make a living.

But the intention with which the photo is being shared is heart-warming  – to show the simplicity of Kalam and his family.

Despite achieving great success in his career, Dr Kalam left no property behind except for his veena, books, a CD player and a laptop.

Kalam’s ancestors were rich businessmen, who controlled the ferry service from Rameshwaram to the main land. They lost their fortune after a bridge was built.

Young Kalam had to sell newspapers to get by, but making money never became a priority for him.  He was very close to his three elder brothers and an elder sister and supported them when they were alive.

Kasim or Usman Khan, the terrorist who crossed over from Pakistan on Wednesday was caught by his own hostages at Udhampur.

The catch is significant as he is the first Pak terrorist to be caught red handed after Ajmal Kasab.

Kasim Khan and his unidentified colleague attacked a BSF convoy killing two jawans and injuring many. When his colleague was killed in retaliation fire, Kasim Khan escaped to a nearby hill taking three civilian hostages.

When the security forces trailed him along with the local police, he started firing on them. Sensing an opportunity, his hostages overpowered him.

Kasim Khan reportedly pleaded with them to set him free and allow him to go back to Pakistan.

The security forces reached the hill-top, took his custody and as the video shows escorted him down.

In another version of the account Kasim Khan was caught by the people of a village, where he had gone to demand food.

A six-minute-long video shows a group of ABVP activists barging into a Kirori Mal College of Delhi University to forcefully stop the screening of Muzaffarnagar Baaqui Hai.

Shot by Nakul Singh Sawhney, Muzaffarnagar Baaqui Hai allegedly depicts Hindutva forces in bad light for their role in the 2013 riots in the UP district of the same name.

On August 1, the KirorimalCollege auditorium had organised a screening of the movie, which was attended by Nakul Singh Sawhney as well.

The video below shows ABVP members barging in to stop the screening. The teachers patiently request them to watch the film and join the discussion.

The audience, mostly the DU students, are asked to vote if they wanted to stop or continue with the screening. Everyone voted to watch the movie.

But ABVP activists insisted on having their way and their threat of physical violence forced the organisers to give in.

ABVP activists also threatened a person, who was capturing the incident on his mobile camera, and made him stop.

A student who spoke after the documentary was disrupted said it was moving in the right direction.

Another student said he felt the documentary was sensationalising a bit, but after seeing ABVP first hand, he said the movie was right.

The Telegraph reports that after Muzaffarnagar Baaqui Hai was stopped, students across the universities in India, from JNU to Central university, Hyderabad, are getting ready to screen it in protest.

Staff correspondent, August 5, 2015

Former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram escaped unhurt after bullets were fired at his Mercedes following a traffic accident on Wednesday.

After the incident, Wasim Akram spoke to local TV cameras explaining his version of the story.

In the video, Wasim Akram says he was driving himself, when a car crashed into his vehicle.

When Wasim Akram asked the driver to pull over, the owner who was sitting in the back seat stepped out and pulled out his gun.

As the accident had stopped other vehicles as well, people got down from their cars  and recognised Wasim Akram. It was then the car owner turned the gun down and fired at the tyres and left the scene in haste.

Wasim Akram said while road rage was normal, settling disputes with weapons was uncalled for.

The Karachipolice gave a slightly different version of the incident. They said Wasim Akram chased the passengers travelling in the car and blocked their vehicle.

He had a heated argument which led to one of the passengers in the car opening fire, they said.

Staff Correspondent, August 5, 2015, NewsCrunch

A hearing impaired and mute couple from Amritsar, Rajesh Kumar and Ram Dulari, have stepped forward to claim that the girl which is known as Geeta in Pakistan, is their daughter Pooja,

Twenty-three-year-old Geeta, an Indian girl, who is also hearing impaired and mute, crossed the border inadvertently 12 years  ago and has been raised by the Edhi Foundation in Karachi.

Pakistan's social activist Ansar Burney has been trying to trace her parents for the last few years and his effort received a boost when Salman Khan's movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which deals with a similar theme, became a hit in both India and Pakistan.

The couple, Rajesh Kumar and Ram Dulari, say their daughter went missing when she was four-years-old. Though Geeta has failed to recognise her parents' photos, Ansar Burney thinks it is a break through and is likely to press for a DNA test, reports The Hindustan Times.

Among other things, Geeta bears a strong resemblance to Ram Dulari, who is convinced that she is her missing daughter.

Geeta's well-wishes in Pakistan are hoping that Geeta will find her parents soon. They fear that  she may slip into depression if she is not united with her family.

Former Ahmedabad judge Himanshu Trivedi says Teesta Setalvad is the
diminishing conscience of the country. Facebook photo

Staff Correspondent, August 5, 2015, NewsCrunch

Himanshu Trivedi, a former Judge from Ahmedabad, quit his position after the 2002-Gujarat riots, among other reasons, due to the suffocating anti-Muslim atmosphere he experienced.

Himanshu Trivedi, who was a City Civil and Session Court Judge from October 2002 to early April 2003, told The Citizen that he could not “take it any more."

He poignantly recollects witnessing anti-Muslim violence first hand, in the company of his young daughter, and feeling impotent about not being able to do anything about it.

He migrated to New Zealand and is at present a practicing lawyer there.

On his Facebook page, Himanshu Trivedi recently posted a message expressing support and appreciation for activist Teesta Setalvad and his former colleague Jyotsna Yagnik, who convicted Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi in the Naroda Patiya case.

He says people like Teesta Setalvad are the "diminishing" conscience of the "Country" he has loved from the bottom of his heart.

He also recounts the immense pressure he experienced from the Gujarat government to  rule against Muslims and how he could not do it since his allegiance was with the Indian Constitution.

He elaborates on how he found it unbearable to live in India, where villains were worshiped while individuals with conscience were being hounded.

Though Himanshu Trivedi quit India long ago, he seems to have kept a close watch on the follow-up of Gujarat riots.

He seems to manage a You Tube account, where he has posted numerous videos  on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Staff correspondent, August 6, 2015, NewsCrunch

Seventy years after Hiroshima was bombed, the world still shudders at the destructive power of the atomic bomb.

The US physicist Robert Oppenheimer reacted with horror quoting from Bhagavad Gita after seeing the potential of the nuclear bomb he had helped create.

Julius Robert Oppenheimer earned the epithet Father of Atomic bomb for his role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II initiative to develop the first nuclear weapons.

The first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945, at New Mexico. In his recorded response to the terrifying devastation, Robert Oppenheimer said a few of the  scientists cried while some laughed, but most were silent looking at what they had created.

The enormity of the destruction power, Robert Oppenheimer says, brought to his mind two lines from Bhagawad Gita: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."

For those who did not know about the Holy Book, Robert Oppenheimer introduced it as a Hindu scripture, in which Vishnu urges the Prince (Arjuna) to do his duty by taking on a divine form and uttering, I am become death....

The destruction of Hiroshima  and Nagasaki shook up Robert Oppenheimer and turned him into a peace activist.

After the war he became a chief adviser to the United States Atomic Energy Commission and lobbied for international control of nuclear power to avert nuclear proliferation.

But in the US,  he was targeted as a communist agent. His security clearance was revoked and he was forced to lead the life of a recluse.

The father and son had come together at Jnaneshwar Mishra Jayanati event at Lucknow.

When Mulayam Singh Yadav rose to speak he found Akhilesh Yadav in conversation  with another leader, and lost his cool.

Shouting at Akhilesh Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav blamed him for his failure to get adequate flood relief from the Centre.  Forgetting that he was before a mike, much to the glee of the audience, Mulayam Singh Yadav took his son to task.

Asking him what he had done on the flood relief, he advised Akhilesh Yadav to inform the Prime Minister on the damages the State had suffered.

He also blamed Akhilesh Yadav for the Lok Sabha losses.

Tuesday’s dressing down was the second time Mulayam Singh Yadav had embarrassed Akhilesh Yadav in public.

Before the Lok Sabha elections he had scolded Akhilesh Yadav before TV cameras saying sycophants were ruling the roost in his Government.

In a rare move for a Gulf country, Bahrain arrested four of its nationals for abusing an expat Indian worker after a video, which captured the incident, went viral.

The 27-second video reportedly shot last Saturday has been shared by over 140,000 times on YouTube and the page has been flooded with comments, reportedly in support of the unfortunate worker.

The video shows a Bahraini man delivering a stinging slap to a worker, who has been identified as an Indian. The well-built Bahraini in shorts and a red baseball cap slaps hard the Indian, who is holding a bucket and probably washing a car. There are other voices in the background, but not seen in the video, which burst in laughter and pass sarcastic remarks in Arabic.

Reeling from the impact of the slap, the Indian worker staggers away clutching his cheek with his hand.
In a rare move for a Gulf country, Bahrain arrested four of its nationals for abusing an expat Indian worker after a video, which captured the incident, went viral.
Foreign Minister of Bahrain Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmad Al Khalifa,
who came in strong support of Indian worker
The video created an outrage in Bahrain, relatively the most progressive of the Gulf countries. People shared it on social media  condemning the act.

The Foreign Minister of Bahrain Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmad Al Khalifa condemned the act and tweeted in support of the Indian worker.

“He (The worker) came all the way from his country to work so hard for some money. And then, a despicable person comes along and slaps him. May God grant him his rights from the aggressor,” he tweeted reports The Gulf News.

After the Foreign Minister's tweet, the police of Riffa, a city in Southern Governorate district, acted and arrested four Bahrainis, who feature in the video. The names of the culprits nor the identity of the worker has been revealed.

While the abuse of expat workers all over the Gulf is common, it is perhaps for the first time, the issue has claimed the attention of any nation.

BBC translated a few comments which have been posted on social media by the Bahraini people in response to the video.

"Everything comes back around in time and one day the Gulfies will work for the Indians, and then see how they will treat them. You don't believe it? Read history," said a comment on YouTube.

"If you use your power to abuse people, then remember Allah's power over you. The act which was carried out by you is abuse," read a tweet. Another comment said "It is the lowest and most despicable thing to slap a poor person who cannot defend himself and it is even more despicable to film the incident."

Around half of the total population of Bahrain of 1.2 million people comprises of expats. Around 460,000 migrant workers, mostly from Asia, make up 77% of Bahrain's private workforce.

They often complain of problems such as unpaid wages, passport confiscation, unsafe housing, excessive work hours, physical abuse and forced labour.

Mumbai Police have denied that Tiger Memon called his mother on July 30 vowing to  avenge the hanging of his brother Yakub.

India Today quoted Dhananjay Kulkarni, DCP, Crime Branch, saying the police had not intercepted any conversation involving Tiger Memon. Yakub's father-in-law Iqbal Memon also went to record to deny that any such conversation had taken place.

The Economic Times had reported on Friday that the Mumbai police recorded a conversation between Tiger Memon and his mother Hanifa at 5.35 am on 30th July, just one and a half hours before Yakub Memon was hanged.

According to The Economic Times, Tiger Memon told their distraught mother, who was reluctant to even talk to him, "Main unko chukwaonga" (I will make them pay.)

Hanifa reportedly implored him to stop the violence which had cost her a son, and said she did not want to see  others dying.

The Economic Times spoke to senior officials from the home ministry and police department, who said they had no knowledge of the conversation.

Yakub Memon, despite being involved with Mumbai bomb blasts, was not on the same page as his elder brother Tiger Memon. As both the brothers developed differences, Yakub Memon came back to India to face a long trial, which culminated in his execution.

Madhya Pradesh BJP MLA from Dhar, Vel Singh Bhuriya threatened to order an encounter on a journalist during a public meeting.

A former RSS leader, Velsingh Bhuria is a first time MLA, who is ironically known for his good manners.

But he seems to have snapped when he was asked about farmers compensation after attending an event in a village.

Eyewitnesses said he was provoked after a few questions suggested that he was powerless to move the local administration to compensate the farmers adequately.

Velsingh Bhuria said, “I even have the power to order an encounter on someone, if people breach peace and create problems.”

Later, he realized that he had waded into a controversy and claimed that he did not know that he was talking to journalists.

However, a video clip of his threat went viral and snowballed into a political issue. Congress spokesperson Pankaj Chaturvedi urged CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan to keep his MLAs in check.

Velsingh Bhuria issued a statement apologising to the journalists. He blamed the media for distorting his statement and said it was a conspiracy by his rivals.

“I respect the media and if my statement has hurt anyone I apologise." Velsingh Bhuria said.

If you are left disappointed by the very short version of the Salman Khan’s song Mein Hoon Hero Tera, here is some good news.

There is a slightly longer version available.

The title track is sung by Salman Khan himself for Hero, the movie he is producing to launch Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty.

He released a 23-second teaser on Wednesday, which made a heavy-duty impression.

It is a melody and sung well by Salman Khan, who is known to be a good singer as well as painter. The version he tweeted about and shared has him just singing the chorus. The rest of the clip is consumed by the promotional information about the movie.

In the longer 30-second version, which is embedded below, Salman Khan sings the lines leading up to the chorus. It will make you like the song more.

The song is also creating a buzz as Salman Khan sports a geeky look wearing jeans and glasses.

Indian Express reports that singing Hero’s title track was an on the spur decision. After looking at the rushes of the film, Salman Khan liked it so much that he decided to sing the song.

It did not matter that it was mid night and the studio had to be specially opened to record it.
