AIADMK leader O.Panneerselvam and twice chief minister of Tamil Nadu also started his journey as a tea seller, just like Modi.

But unlike the prime minister, O Panneerselvam's tea shop still runs on Theni Road in Periyakulam.

O Panneerselvam started PV tea stall with a partner, Vijayan, four decades ago.

In the '80s he handed it over to his brother O Raja, who renamed it after his daughter Rosie, who tragically died from drowning.

O Panneerselvam joined politics, became a local panchayat head and later, an MLA. The man known as staunch Jayalalithaa loyalist, ironically started his stint in AIADMK supporting her rival MGR's widow Janaki, before switching sides.

Jalayalitha, who has been forced to step down twice - in 2001 and 2014 - due to corruption charges, chose O Panneerselvam to step in as interim CM.

When he is not CM, O Panneerselvam holds powerful portfolios such as Finance or PWD in Jaya governments.

The man, who is often ridiculed for his cringing show of devotion to Jayalalithaa, remembers where he came from and continues to keep the tea shop running.

The Hindu reports that he performs an annual Ayudha Puja at his tea shop and visits it whenever he finds time,

The shop does not have a nameplate but is well known in the area for the strong tea it brews.

The Scroll notes that O Panneerselvam's shop sells tea at Rs 10 a cup, double the going price, but still has customers flocking to it.

A tweet from Bollywood actress Twinkle Khanna enraged supporters of Art of Living and elicited a call from some of them to boycott Housefull 3.

Twinkle Khanna's husband Akshay Kumar is the lead actor in forthcoming Bollywood movie Housefull 3.

She deleted the tweet posted on the Twitter handle @Msfunnybones and apologised for hurting the sentiments of Sri Ravishankar's supporters, but continues to face anger in social media.

It started on Saturday when Twinkle Khanna tweeted a comment on Sri Ravishankar's controversial comment that Malala did not deserve the Nobel prize.

“Sri Sri got his nobel foot and half his beard stuck in his mouth in a yogic pose .” she reportedly tweeted.

Though she described it as a joke, it did not go down well with AOL supporters and Twinkle Khanna deleted the tweet saying she may have shown error or judgement.

But the controversy took a new turn when the Art of Living's international director, Darshak Hathi, tweeted hinting at a boycott of Housefull3.

Tagging Mrs Funnybones he tweeted,  “Error of Judgement or Fear of #BoycottHousefull3. Anyway Being Old & Being wise is different thing.”

NewsCrunch is not able to verify his tweet as it seems to have been deleted.

Now, that got Twinkle Khanna angry. She stated that Art of Living was practicing art of intimidation and warned him not to drag her husband Akshay Kumar into the controversy.

Though there are reconciliation noises from both the sides, some of the Art of Living supporters are continuing with the Boycott Housefull3 buzz.

Fake post on Times Now goes viral - Washington Post did not say it was the most biased media house in the world

May 9, 2016, NewsCrunch

A fake post on Times now, which has Washington Post slamming it, has gone massively viral.

In double-deck thick font headline, the alleged Washington Post report screams: Indian TV channel  Times Now rated most biased media house by global rating agency .

It also has a large picture of Arnab Goswami to boot. The other details of the report are hidden in unreadable font.

The photoshopped image, obviously fake, probably was released on social media on Saturday.

Interestingly, it seems to have been the handiwork of Congress affiliated accounts, though it is the AAP camp which usually takes on BJP in the viral battles.

As NewsCrunch has reported exclusively, Congress has also begun to boycott Arnab Goswami's popular show News Hour, which used to make punching bags out of its spokespersons.

In a recent interview with Ahmed Patel, Arnab Goswami requested the Congress leader to lift the ban, but was politely turned down.

The NDTV team was in Tamil Nadu to shoot for their election  series Battleground when they met the captain and decided to copy his act. As they raise their hand, they wear a smile, while Captain Vijayakanth looks dead serious.

Captain Vijayakanth, in the NDTV interview, described himself  as a hero, Karunanidhi as a villain and Jayalalithaa as a villie.

Padmavati: In next film, Sanjay Leela Bhansali to recreate Alauddin Khilji's obsession with mythical queen Padmini

After Saawariya, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had gone to Paris to direct an opera, Padmavati, based on Rani Padmini's story.

May 9, 2016, NewsCrunch

After Bhajirao Mastani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is said to be working on another history drama based on the mythical episode involving Alauddin Khilji and Mewar queen Padmini or Padmavati.

Prakash Kapadia, the scriptwriter of 'Bajirao Mastani', has started work on 'Padmavati', which is targeting a December 15, 2017, release, reports Mid Day.

Randeep Hooda, Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut are some of the names that are going around for the casting of the movie.

After Saawariya, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had gone to Paris to direct an opera, Padmavati, based on Rani Padmini's story.

As the legend goes Alauddin Khilji, who lusted after Padmini laid siege to  Chittor fort, demanding king Ratan Singh to give up his wife. The Rajput king resisted, resulting in a prolonged siege which ended in an all-out battle and Padmini immolating herself by committing jauhar.

There is no historical evidence that Rani Padmini actually existed.

The first written reference to Rani Padmini, occurs nearly 240 years after the time period ascribed to her in Padmavat, an epic poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540 CE.

According to the poem, she was the wife of King Ratansen of Chittor. and the daughter of the contemporary Sinhala king. She was known across India for her bewitching beauty.

As the literary sources of Padmini developed, different versions of her story also emerged. In one version, it was a fellow Rajput king not Alauddin Khilji, who seeks her.

But all stories end with the death of Ratan Singh and Padmavati.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi made a rare but emotional reference to her Italian origins in a speech in Kerala on Monday.

The 69-year-old leader said she had a family in Italy of whom she was not ashamed of.

“I have a 93-year-old mother I am not ashamed of," she said. But she went on to say that Indiamattered more.

"I will die in Indiaand my ashes will be immersed in India as the blood of my loved ones are mixed in this soil.”

Sonia’s unusual speech came days after the Prime Minister made a cutting remark about her Italian origins. Citing a Milan court verdict, which found bribes were paid in Indiafor the AgustaWestland  helicopter deal when the Congress was in power, Modi had said he did not have roots in Italy.

His implication was that Sonia personally benefitted from the deal.

“I also know PM Modi will never understand my integrity, and him and the RSS will always abuse me."

Over the years BJP has made repeated reference to Sonia Gandhi’s Italian roots. It prompted her to put Manmohan Singh in the PM’s seat in 2005 though she had led UPA to power.

Chattisgarh IAS officer Jagdish Sonkar, who went viral recently for keeping his leg on the cot, as he spoke to a patient at a hospital has apologised.

The young IAS officer was slammed for what was widely seen as arrogant behaviour.

And here could be a case of an apology slightly complicating the controversy further.

The apology is directed at fellow civil servants, who seemed to have been divided on their response, to the viral photo.

In a Facebook post, Jagdish Sonkar says he apologises to each of his colleagues at the civil service fraternity for the harm the act has done for their image.

There is not a word on the patients in the hospital, who endured his behaviour, which he admits as avoidable.

Jagdish Sonkar assured fellow babus that he would stick to the core values of the civil service and lists them - Honesty, Integrity, Objectivity, Impartiality and Civility, Modesty, Humility, Chivalry  - all which his viral photo failed to convey.

With a touch of defiance, he also thanks all those who did not judge him based on a single snapshot.

A student from J&K Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan has come second in the 2015 Civil Services, just behind  Delhi’s Tina Dabi.

The 23-year-old Athar, who hails from Anantnag, got through the exam in his second attempt. In his first attempt in 2014, he got into Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) and is presently undergoing training in Indian Railways Institute of Transport Management, Lucknow.

Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan is an IIT-Roorkee alumni and there is a pattern to his success.

Kashmir Life reports that a teacher noticed that Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan had good analytical ability and asked him to aim for IIT.

In 2010, Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan cleared CET, AIEEE and even the coveted BITSAT though IIT eluded him. He joined GovernmentMedicalCollege, Jammu, and wrote JEE again next and got into IIT Roorkee.

It also took a repeat attempt in civil services to get into IAS.

What explains Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan’s success is his determination and clarity. These traits have taken him from a small village, Devipora, in Anantnag district to the top of the elite bureaucracy exam.

Many told Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan that he was foolish to go for IIT after getting into medicine. He told Kashmir Life that he thought differently and was steadfast on fulfilling his aim.

Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan does not see himself as a bookworm. He says it is not the hours you put into study, but the study put into the hours that matters.

Interestingly, a Chetan Bhagat fan, Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan has read all his novels.

The person ahead of him in the civil services, Tina Dabi, is no less impressive. Just 22, and an LSR political science student, Tina Dabi cleared the civil services exam in her first attempt.

Just 22, and topping civil services exam in her very first attempt has been an incredible experience for Delhi girl, Tina Dabi.

A political science student from LSR, she had topped in her college. Before that Tina Dabi had topped the 12th CBSE exam scoring 100 out of 100 in political science.

Speaking to journalists, Tina Dabi says she was probably expecting to get selected in the civil services exam, but never thought would top it.

Tina Dabi is candid enough to say she had worked very hard and is happy that the torture is over.

Sincerity, hard work and determination took her where she is now, Tina Dabi adds.

The inspiration to become a civil servant came from her mom, who suggested she take up arts instead of science after 10th.

While the best of the students opted for science, Tina Dabi took arts and began her preparation for civil services earnestly.

Her mom said whatever subject Tina Dabi chose, she should become the best in that.

After her stunning success, Tina Dabi hopes to become a role model.

Punjab couple in their 70s have baby through IVF - do we need an age cap here

A screengrab of HT report on Daljinder Kaur, 72, and Mohinder Singh, 79, with their son Armaan Singh

May 11, 2016, NewsCrunch

There is an yet another report of a couple in their 70s having a baby through IVF.

The Hindustan Times reports that an Amritsar Daljinder Kaur, 72,and her husband Mohinder Singh Gill, 79, are the proud parents of a healthy baby boy, Arman Singh.

The child came 46 years after their marriage and about 20 years after the lady's menopause, with the able assistance of National Fertility and Test Tube Baby Centre in Hisar.

The woman was in frail health, but a battery of experts including a cardiologist cleared the idea, which took three tries to succeed.

Daljinder Kaur's fallopian tubes were blocked. The couple could not seek treatment when they were young as they were unaware. Mohinder Singh says he was engaged in litigation with close relatives that gave little time for anything else.

IVF-enabled aged couples have many precedents in India. In 2008, a 66-year-old woman had given birth to triplets at the same Hisar centre.

A 70-year-old woman Rajo Devi had given birth to a baby girl in 2006.

These treatments raise ethical questions that need to be addressed. Experts recommend an age cap on IVF treatment to ensure that parents are around till the child reaches adulthood. They also note that as the couple age the quality of their sperm and egg deteriorates.

A few countries have legislated upper age cap on IVF couples and a few countries have left it to the self-regulation of industry bodies and clinics.

In India, there seems to be neither.

A video, which has now gone viral on social media, shows the villagers butchering it and throwing chunks of meat into a bucket.

An eyewitness posted on social media that the animal was still breathing when it was found.

Media reports that there was barely any trace of the beached baby whale by morning except for the photos of the whale’s carcass, which went viral, on social media.

A house in the Oyel village of Lakhimpur, UP, has shot into limelight by unwittingly hosting over a 10 snakes.

The local forest department has captured the slithering animals  and released them in a nearby forest.

In the drama that unfolded recently, two snakes were initially found in the house of a resident, Jitendra Mishra. It was night and the family members heard the hissing sound and woke up to spot them.

The snakes were captured with the help of neighbours and near a river that flows nearby.

The next day was worse. Snakes came in slithering in from different directions, prompting the family to call a professional catcher from the nearby Sultanpur. When he broke a rarely-used wall, they were aghast see a snake pit with over a hundred of them.

Though the forest department has removed all snakes, the entire village is still terrified. Many say they prefer  to spend time sitting on cots than risk moving about in the floor.
