Animal rights activists are aghast at a video, which shows a group of villagers in Chitardurga district of Karnataka, thrashing a bear with sticks.
The video shows the bear inside a village running helter-skelter. A group of villagers are seen beating it brutally with sticks and stones.
It is not clear when the incident took place in the Uppanayakanahalli village of the district. But the video went viral after Kannada TV channels aired it on Wednesday.
The villagers say the bear had been attacking them for the last few days and had even injured a few of them.
Animal rights activists said forest department officials should have intervened on time to prevent the situation going out of control.

The forest officials say they rushed to the village and rescued the bear which is reportedly being treated at a zoo.
