Chayan Sarkar, a reporter who wrote extensively on allegations of extortion and illegal activities by some Trinamul Congress members has gone missing since the night of August 2, 2015.

He was a regular contributor to the ‘Uttar Banga Sambad’ daily in northern Bengal.

The Telegraph reports that Chayan Sarkar was traveling to Alipurduar to share his experiences on the backlash that followed his reporting, in a street corner meeting organized by a human rights group.

A few days ago before he went missing, he had been attacked and threatened at this own home, allegedly by Trinamul Chhatra Parishad members.

Chayan Sarkar had complained to the police about this, but not all persons named in the FIR had been arrested. So he had planned to go on a hunger strike in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police.

Eight of the nine people named in the FIR were arrested and later released on bail, following Sarkar’s disappearance.

Sourav Chakraborty, the Alipurduar district Trinamul president, has said the party was in no way connected to any of these issues.
