Airlift, a highly awaited Akshay Kumar movie is due for release; but the man, whose heroics it celebrates, Ranjit Katyal, is nowhere to be seen.

The movie is about how Ranjit Katyal, a rich and influential, Kuwait-based businessman uses his contacts and resources in Gulf to evacuate 170,000 Indians during the first Gulf war.

Nobody had seen or heard of Ranjit Katyal before Airlift shooting started. Search Google, there is not one image of the man who organised the world’s largest evacuation.

Media reports have in the recentweeks celebrated the legend of Ranjit Katyal without really asking where he is now.

Akshay Kumar says he has not met him. But he adds that the director of the movie, Raja Menon, has.

Raja says that to make the shots authentic, Akshay Kumar would ask him what Ranjit Katyal would do in a given situation.  Again, the suggestion is the man  is for real.

Akshay Kumar also says the man was a multi-millionaire, who lost everything and is now back to being a millionaire.

So, where is he now – some reports say Gujarat and some say Kuwait. He is reportedly sees himself more as a Kuwaiti, where he made his fortune, than Indian.

So, what’s the truth about Ranjit Katyal.

The man is pure imagination. The film may be portraying real-life events. But it has woven them around a central character, who is pure fiction.

The Airlift story of massive evacuation against odds is for real. The real heroes were Indian embassy and air Indiaofficials. They raced against time to move Indians to Amman and airlift them from there.

As a post in Quorapoints out none of the Indian officials of the time have heard of a Ranjit Katyal. There are otheraccounts of the evacuation – the man is always found missing in action.

The character of Ranjit Katyal was created by the Airlift crew and they kept him real to make the movie more interesting. Now that the D-day is close by, they know they will have to let the cat out.

In a Filmfareinterview published on Wednesday, Akshay Kumar says  three or four people were involved in the evacuation operation.

“We’ve combined all their stories for the character but Ranjit Katyal was the main guy. We’ve changed his name in the film,” he adds.
