Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad and nine other soldiers of the 19 Madras Regiment were manning a helipad named Sonam Post when the avalanche hit them last week.  The helipad located at Saltoro Ridge flanking the Siachen Glacier is at an altitude of 19,600ft. That makes it the highest helipad in the world.

Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad and nine other soldiers of the 19 Madras Regiment were manning a helipad named Sonam Post when the avalanche hit them last week.

The helipad located at Saltoro Ridge flanking the Siachen Glacier is at an altitude of 19,600ft. That makes it the highest helipad in the world.

Along with another helipad at Amar,  Sonam post is absolutely vital to maintain Indian hold over the 76-km-long Siachen glacier.

The Siachen Glacier and all of its tributaries, and the three main passes of the Saltoro Ridge —Sia La, Bilafond La, and Gyong La — are under Indian control.

The Sonam post stands adjacent to a mountain Bana upride, which hovers over it at a height of 1,500 ft.

It was from here a kilometre-wide ice came loose and crashed down upon Indian soldiers at the Sonam post, reports The Telegraph.
