Nguyen Thi Hue, 42, a female prisoner in Vietnam, who was sentenced to death in 2014 on a drug trafficking charge, has escaped gallows by smartly getting pregnant.
She is due to give birth in two months and according to Vietnamese law, women convicts with children of less than three years of age cannot be executed.
Her sentence in all probability would be commuted to life imprisonment in a jail in the Quang Ninh province of the country.
What has made a splash in the Vietnamese media is the way she went about getting pregnant.
She reportedly got into a deal with a male prisoner last August to buy his semen for nearly Rs 1,50,000. The deal was made possible as both were inmates at a mixed prison.
The male inmate, Nguyen Tuan Hung, 27, reportedly dropped his sperm in plastic bags at a hiding place in the jail.
She collected the bags and used a syringe to impregnate herself. It reportedly took two attempts to achieve the objective.
While the story ends well for her, four prison guards have been suspended, reports The Daily Mail.
Nguyen Thi Hue used to smuggle drugs from China. She was caught in 2012 in a major anti-drug crackdown by the Vietnamese officials.
