Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt made a dramatic exit from Yerawada prison on Thursday after serving nearly 42 months of his five-year sentence.
A video shows a smiling Sanjay emerging out of the jail gate. Clad in blue shirt and jeans, he turns back to touch ground and salute the tri-colour flying on the imposing Yerawada prison building.
Carrying a khaki bag and a green coloured file he got into a waiting car and drove away. From the Pune airport, he flew to Mumbai in a chartered flight.
Sanjay Dutt was arrested in 1993 for possession of an AK-56 rifle, which was a part of arms and explosives used in the Mumbai serial blasts.
He served part of his five-year sentence during trial and the remainder 42 months at the Yerawada prison. His frequent paroles and furlough drew criticism as selective favours granted to a celebrity.
Maharashtra government, however, refuted the allegations, saying his remission of 144 days and parole leaves were in accordance with jail manual.
