Sexaholic, the new short film on sex addiction, has gone viral. Directed by Shailendra Singh and released on February 26, it has clocked over 1.5 million views on YouTube. Yes, sex sells.
A rich house wife, played by Shama Sikander, confesses to her husband that she has slept with 20 men in 7 months. They go for medical help, which does not work and she worsens, descends into madness and ends up in a mental hospital.
First things first – Sexaholic is ‘bold’ and titillating, shows Shama handling a dildo, making love to several men and having brain-blowing orgasms. Online movies, as RGV pointed out recently, are beyond the grasp of Indian Censor Board led by Pankaj Nihalani.
Second, Shama is brilliant. The girl-next-door of Yeh Meri Life Hai transforms into a ravishing man eater. In a film marked by mediocre acting by all others, she stands out. The bored housewife, the sex addict and the mental wreck – she gets into different roles with élan. She is the only convincing part of the movie.
Where Sexaholic fails big time is in its depiction of sex addiction. It ends up showing nymphomaniacs as werewolf-like creatures waiting for someone to come and lock them up.
This depiction of sex addiction in such harsh terms is definitely not reflective of the mainstream condition and may be medically invalid as well. The Mayo Clinic websitehas a page on treating sex addiction. The treatment varies from prescription drugs to counselling.
Solitary confinement, where Shama ends in Sexaholic, is not one of them.
