Dr Ruveda Salam, the first woman IPS officer from Kashmir is all set to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) after writing UPSC exam again and improving her rank.
She spoke to Rediff.com recently explaining her journey so far.
Hailing from the remote Kupwara district in Kashmir, Dr Ruveda Salam passed her MBBS exams, became a doctor.
Next came the Kashmir Administrative Service which she cleared easily; she followed up on this by the qualifying in the UPSC exams and became an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Still not satisfied, inspired by her father, she appeared for the exams again, passed it in flying colours and is presently all set to become an IAS officer.
She discusses various issues ranging from the rigours of IPS training and work to her love for Chennai; the sense of fulfillment she gets when she sees that she is a source of inspiration to youngsters, especially girls, to her dreams for a stable, simple life.
On Kashmir, she takes pride in the culture and traditions of her land and its people, yearns for peaceful existence of all Kashmiris and feels that this would be possible through all round development of her state.
On popular misconceptions in rest of India that Kashmiris are anti-Indian and cannot compete with others, she says Kashmiris can counter these by having the right attitude and proving themselves in their chosen fields.
