Why has Modi been dropped? Fortune does not explain, and we can only guess. |

Fortune magazine has just released its annual list of 50 greatest leaders, which is topped by Jeff Bezos of Amazon.
From the Indian point of view, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal gets into the list at the 42nd position. And Modi, who appeared at a high rank of 5, last year, has dropped out of the elite ;list.
Kejriwal has been selected for his odd/even traffic scheme to battle pollution in Delhi. Fortune says he risked his career to launch the ambitious scheme, which de-congested Delhi's roads and reduced air pollution.
Last year, Fortune sounded optimistic while introducing Modi in the list. It had noted that he was making India more business-friendly and less regulated, addressing violence against women and improving sanitation.
In a given year, the person would need to have a new accomplishment, resting on the past laurels would not do. The person should also have inspired others to act on a worthy quest and should show staying power as well.
Though from last year only three names have repeated, Bezos, Tim Cook and Pope Francis, Fortune likes to project its exclusion as a snub when it comes to business and political leaders.
The US President Obama has been dumped from the list for the third consecutive year. Explaining his omission Fortune had noted last year that faced with domestic and global challenges, Obama had surrendered.
There is another name from South Asia in this year's list: Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina is at number 10 for empowering women and promoting education in her country.
