A Facebook posting about children studying to be priests being forced to clean the garbage next to their school went viral, and triggered action by the Corporation of Chennai, which got the premises cleaned.
On August 4th, Radhika Subramanian wrote on her Facebook page about the unhygienic conditions surrounding the Veda Pathashala in West Mambalam, due to mindless garbage dumping by people and lack of sanitation services, and how the students had to clean it themselves.
The pictures she put up showed young students using their bare hands to rid their school surroundings of garbage.
The post as well as the pictures have been shared nearly 2500 times on Facebook.
The Times of India reports that the very next day, the Corporation of Chennai finally got their contractors to clear the garbage.
"Thank u all so much for ur co-operation... Whoever shared dis msg. Thanks a ton. The problem is solved. Garbage is cleaned" Radhika Subramanian posted with smileys on August 5th.
