CRPF was deployed on Tuesday night at the campus of Srinagar NIT after non-Kashmiri students clashed with Jammu and Kashmir police and were lathicharged.
A viral video shows a policemen chasing a small group of students and thrashing them. It is not clear in the video the circumstances, which led to the police action of students in this specific incident.
Several students have been reportedly injured.
Outstation students said the police lathicharged them when they tried to go out of the campus.
Police said they feared for the protesting students' safety as they tried to go outside the campus shouting slogans. They also alleged students misbehaved with them.
Non-Kashmiri students are holding a dharna demanding a meeting with HRD officials.
The campus has been witnessing clashes between local and non-local students over India's defeat in the semi-final match in the World T20 tournament.
