Assamese actress-MLA Angoorlata Deka faces online sexism – scandalous even fake photos circulated

Angoorlata Deka’s fans are upset that their idol, a woman of substance, has the misfortune of getting known outside Assam as a pretty face with a hot body.

Popular Assamese actress Angoorlata Deka won her seat in Batadroba by a margin of close to 6,000 votes.

Her feat was impressive as she had contested in a minority-dominated constituency on a BJP ticket and taken on a Congress heavy weight.

After her victory an online buzz built around her, though for wrong reasons.  Scandalous fake photos, allegedly of hers, started going viral. That triggered dubious media coverage with a few big media publications running photo slideshows with her ‘hot’ pictures, as they put it.  

A few publications like Zeeand Daily Yo carried a report condemning the sexist coverage

The controversy has been unfair to Angoorlata Deka, an achiever who has come up against tough odds.

An accomplished dancer from Nalbari., she was stopped from chasing her dream of joining films from her conservative family.

It took all the persuasive skills of Seema Biwas, also from Nalbari, to convince Angoorlata Deka’s family to let her act in films.

Angoorlata Deka’s fans are upset that their idol, a woman of substance, has the misfortune of getting known outside Assam as a pretty face with a hot body.

Though she delivered hits like Surjasta and Bakor Putek, it was in the gruelling Assamese mobile theatre, where she found her calling. She is known for the variety of roles she has performed, which includes the character of Benazir Bhutto.

Angoorlata Deka is married to another fine Assamese actor Akaasheep and lives in Batadraba, from where she contested.
