Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sprung a surprise on a developers meet in New Delhi on Monday by reciting two memorable lines from Mirza Ghalib, a noted Urdu and Persian poet of the late Mughal years.

As the audience, usually used to technical power points listened a bit taken aback, Satya Nadella said:

Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi ki har Khwaish pe dum nikle,
Bahut nikle mere armaan magar phir bhi kam nikle

These lines literally mean  according to a translation in Quora:

A thousand desires such as these that each desire takes a lifetime
I have had many a desire, but they were all but few.

The point being instead of being swept away by an endless stream of desires, each of which will take a lifetime to achieve, prioritise on the worthwhile pursuits.

So, how do these lines inspire one of the most famous Indian expats in the US tech industry?

Satya Nadella said he is focused only on two passions that have driven his -- poetry and computer science.
