Haryana Gau Sewa Ayog, a statutory body, has proposed the BJP government to levy 'cow cess' to mobilise funds for the welfare of cows.
Besides a 5 per cent cess on cinema tickets, it has also proposed a levy of Rs 2,100 on booking of banquet hall and Re 1 per bag of foodgrain. It has also sought half of donations at state-managed temples to take care of the cows in the state, reports PTI.
The funds would be utilised to take care of 3.20 lakh cows in gaushalas and 1.17 lakh stray cows,
The proposal follows reports that Punjab government is also planning a cess on several items, including vehicles and electricity, for welfare of cows in the state.
Twitter was not amused. There seem to be a fatigue with the excess of cess slapped too frequently for various reasons. Also, while levying a cess for education is in social interest, many are not sure if protection of cows merit the same privilege.
