West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee made a strong attack on saffronisation of the country on Thursday vowing to fight politically a cow census proposed by a BJP-affiliated body.

Condemning the recent violence on Dalits in Gujarat and taking on the centre head-on for promoting Hindutva, Mamata Banerjee said what people wore and ate was a matter of individual choice, not anyone’s political concern.

Addressing a rally in Kolkota she opposed a proposed exercise to carry out a census of cows in the State.

"I am stating this clearly… If some people try to conduct such cow surveys, if they try to stoke fire in our neighbourhoods, we will fight it politically. We will not sit quietly and spare them,"The Telegraph quoted her saying.

She noted that people from a political party had been visiting houses taking count of the cows.

“ What right do these people have to ask such questions? It is none of their business,” she added.

Her unambiguous opposition makes the proposed exercise to take a headcount of cows difficult for the BJP-backed Gau Raksha Committee in West Bengal.

Gau Raksha Committee had planned to carry out two rounds of cow census in West Bengal. First in early August and then after Bakr Eid in September to see how many cows had gone missing.

The Gau Raksha Committee had also planned to file FIRs against missing cows.

Subrata Gupta, president of committee had told PTIthat thousands of cows were slaughtered or smuggled to Bangladesh every year during Bakr Eid,.

The purpose of the census was to stop it, he had said.
