Bollywood legend Smita Patil would have been 60 today.

She died nearly 30 years ago after a very short but dazzling career in Bollywood. She spent a little over a decade in her career till tragically passing away at child birth.

Why do people still remember her?  She was a fine actress, among the best of her generation, who was lucky to find movies that let her being out her talent  - Manthan, Bhumika, Aakrosh, Chakra, Chidambaram and Mirch Masala.

She successfully crossed over to mainstream cinema and acted with the leading men of her time - Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan.

There was also an enormous personality about Smita Patil that left behind an impression and does not wash away easily. Starting as a news reader, she would go in jeans and t-shirt to studio and drape over a saree there. That rare streak stayed through out her career.

Here is a competent DD-style documentary to get a feel of what she did. It is factual, descriptive and narrated as if they are selling aspirin. You may not get any insight into the Smita Patil's enduring persona, but it does get the point across.
