Four senior BJP leaders -- LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Shanta Kumar and Yashwant Sinha today -- issued a joint statement on Tuesday asking the party to identify and punish those responsible for its defeat in the Bihar assembly elections.

They said the party had been emasculated and lost its consensual approach.

These words and sentiments have the imprint of Arun Shourie and Govindacharya, two Advani loyalists, known for their way with the words.  Both are fierce critics of Modi and they seem to have set the tone for the veterans' revolt.

It is easy to dismiss the revolt as the frustration of the spent forces.

But it is real bad news for Modi and Shah. There is widespread anger against them in BJP. In supreme self-confidence or arrogance, they have centralised too much, marginalising too many.

For those licking their wounds, a parallel leadership may just have come in place.

As in any BJP crisis  this is the stage where RSS steps in. And they also seem to think that Modi and Shah need to be contained. A popular view within the party states that Mohan Bhagwat's badly timed comments on reservation were calculated to make BJP lose Bihar and put Modi and Shah in their place

It is unlikely Murli Manohar Joshi would have done anything if he thought it would upset RSS.

In whatever way RSS arbitrates, it is going to leave a badly weakened Prime Minister. Modi, from now on, may be as constrained as Manmohan Singh.

The results of Bihar election show that no lesson has been learnt from the Delhi fiasco. To say everyone is responsible for defeat in Bihar is to ensure everyone is held responsible.

It shows those who would have appropriated credit are bent on shrugging off responsibilty for the disastrous showing in Bihar.

A principle reason for the latest defeat is the way in party has been emasculated in the last year. A thorough review needed for reasons for defeat.
