Senior inspector Mohan Waghmare of Hill Line police station, Ulhasnagar, says a viral video which features him is fake.
The video, which shows him thrashing a youth and abusing his female friend, had gone viral on Sunday.
Waghmare said he found the couple in an auto, indulging in obscene acts.
“I did not beat the youth. The video circulated on social media is doctored," he told The Times of India.
The local residents had reportedly complained the area was being frequented by couples who put on a public display of their affection.
The police stepped up the vigil leading to Waghmare’s encounter with the couple.
A video shows him slapping the boy repeatedly and even warning the girl that she would have been beaten up if he had women cops with him.
The couple, who are seen pleading with the police, were let off with a warning.
