Video: Watch PM walking away as National Anthem plays in Russia - Modi's fifth national symbol controversy in last one year

December 23, 2015, NewsCrunch

In a protocol disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi walked away as the Indian national anthem was being played in Moscow.

Modi, who landed in Russia for his annual summit with President Putin, was receiving a guard of honour from Russian soldiers.

In an apparent mix-up, Modi was prompted to inspect the guard of honour, which he did by walking before the assembled soldiers standing in stiff attention. But the Russian Army  Band also started playing Jana Gana Mana at the same time.

An absent minded or clueless Modi continued to walk away from the band.

A Russian official realised the mistake, ran to stop Modi, and call him back.

Modi immediately obliged and returned to stand erect along with the soldiers, who were playing the anthem.

Protocol requires dignitaries and citizens to stand still in respect when the anthem is played at a public event. Perhaps, a jet-lagged Modi overlooked the rule book.

Modi has been in similar controversies in the past. He had wiped his face with a stole that was draped in the colours of the Indian flag during the Yoga Day. He had also signed a fabric that looked like the Indian flag in the US.

During a recent summit with Japanese PM Shinzo Abe in Malaysia, he had failed to notice that Indian flag was flying  upside down.

Earlier to that he had been publicly corrected in protocol by German Chancellor Angela Merkel; she had ignored his handshake to point out that when country heads pose for photos they should do it in front of their national flags,

A recent effort by AAP government to increase Delhi MLAs salary had sparked off a huge controversy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new parliament building of Afghanistan in Kabul, built by India, on Friday.

Afghan officials describe the building as a symbol of their country's fledgling democracy.

The work on the parliament building started in 2009 and missed its completion deadlines at least 3 times.

The initial budget was estimated at $45 million though project cost eventually doubled to $90 million. .

The parliament building, which boasts of Asia’s largest dome, has elements of Mughal and modern architecture.

It is situated between historic landmarks - King’s Palace ‘Darulaman’ and the Queen's Palace – which bear the marks of the civil war that ravaged Afghanistan.

The building will house the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House) with a seating capacity of 294 and a 190-seat Meshrano Jirga (Upper House). Entrance lobby, offices, conference rooms, dining halls and a press room are among other components of the building.

The official sentiments between New Delhi and Kabul may fluctuate, but the Afghan people see their new parliament building and the 300 million Salma dam project in Heart province as a sign of Indian good will towards them.

When the Salma dam, also called the India-Afghanistan friendship dam, reached a critical filling point in July 2015, thousands of Afghans carried a 100 metre long Indian tricolour as a gesture of gratitude.

Vaishali Paranjape had to go to Jamnagar but got into a flight  that was bound for Coimbatore.

She realised the mix-up only when the Coimbatore plane started taxiing, reports Mid Day.

After she alerted the crew, the plane aborted  the flight and offloaded her. She made it to the Jamnagar flight on time.

The mix-up happened as the boarding gates were adjacent - 40 and 41.

Mid Day quotes an airport official, who described the incident as a major security lapse; the onus was on the airline staff to ensure passengers got on to their correct flight, he said.

PM Modi's surprise visit to Lahore has brought industrialist Sajjan Jindal into limelight, who was in the Pakistani city on the same day.

The Congress party has alleged that Modi went to Lahore to promote the business interest of Sajjan Jindal though without naming him.

Sajjan Jindal is the elder brother of Naveen Jindal, a Congress MP; he is a key member of the Jindal group, which has diversified interests including steel. Forbes estimates the total worth of the Jindal family members, who have separated, at $ 6 billion.

It is not the first time Sajjan Jindal has been associated with Nawaz Sharif, nor is it the first time he has reportedly facilitated a meeting between Modi and  Sharif.

Unverifiable media reports state that that Sajjan Jindal advised Nawaz Sharif to invite Modi, who was in Kabul,  for lunch. The fact that December 25 was Nawaz Sharif's birthday provided the perfect alibi.

As Nawaz Sharif called, Modi responded positively and went to Lahore on the way back to Delhi.

Sajjan Jindal has been a controversial figure in Pakistan.

When Nawaz Sharif came to Delhi last May to attend Modi's inauguration, he accepted an invite for tea, which Sajjan Jindal had hosted in his house.

Nawaz Sharif had declined to meet Hurriyat leaders  and went to the tea party hosted by an Indian industrialist  - that was enough to get Pak media to go up in arms. Ironically, the incident made little news in India.

NDTV journalist Barka Dutt claims in her book The Unquiet land that last November Modi and Nawaz Sharif met for an hour in Kathmandu during the Saarc summit. The meeting, which was held secretly, lasted for an hour. Both the leaders agreed to keep talking informally.

The meeting, Barka Dutt claims, was held in Sajjan Jindal's hotel room. It was Modi, who initiated the meeting with Nawaz Sharif. He called up Sajjan Jindal and requested him to set it up.

So, Sajjan Jindal has been acting as an informal messenger between the two leaders.

So, what is his interest? Afghan iron ore, say reports.

Jindals are second largest steel manufacturers in India and are interested in procuring high quality but cheap iron ore from Afghanistan.

Afghan iron ore export to India will be cost effective only if Pakistan allows it right of passage and makes its ports available.

That is what is Sajjan Jindal is after, says The Economics Times.

The latest episode of Al Jazeera's flagship show Head to Head hosted by Mehdi Hasan has many heated moments with BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav.

The episode, Is Modi's India flirting with fascism? which aired on Christmas, explores the rise of right-wing Hindu nationalism in India.

The show has Ram Madhav defining India as one culture, one people and one nation

His contention was that India was Hindu, which could perhaps mean different things to different people; but it was an umbrella concept which encompassed everything in the country.

Mehdi Hasan asked Ram Madhav if his definition would include millions of Indians who called themselves Muslims, Christians and Sikhs.

Then he asked if Ram Madhav would define Taj Mahal as Hindu culture. And if it did not meet the Hindu criteria, would it be painted orange or flattened, he added.

A combative Ram Madhav said Taj Mahal was part of culture, which he called Hindu.

"Muslims may disagree, so be it," he said.

The government’s claim that Modi’s Lahore visit was not planned is being hotly contested.

It has emerged that Modi had cancelled all his engagements on December 25, to keep the day clear for an unknown engagement.

Modi had earlier planned a major initiative on the Christmas Day to show he was not anti-minority.

Arun Jaitley was to host a tea party for influential leaders of Christian community, who have been critical of the growing intolerance in the country.

Modi, who avoids iftaar parties, was not part of the tea ceremony, officially. He was supposed to drop in at the tea party, much the way US presidents do, when their underlings hold important meetings.

The Telegraph reports that when Modi was in Kochion December 14, he had sought a postponement of the tea party during a meeting with Cardinal Mar George Alencherry, the archbishop of the Syro-MalabarChurch.

Modi told the archbishop that he regretted the inconvenience that had been caused to community leaders but did not give any reason for putting off the event.
