Smriti or Sushma - who is Number 1 woman in BJP

February 25, 2016, NewsCrunch

PM Modi tweeted a link to a YouTube video showing Union Minister Smriti Irani’s full speech in Parliament  on Wednesday.

He further stamped his approval to her speech with a caption that held nothing back – satya meva jayate.

Smriti Irani should be thrilled at the public backing from her boss. She dutifully retweets everything he puts on Twitter. For a change, he was reciprocating in kind.

In her Wednesday speech, Smriti defended BJP in the Rohith Vemula suicide and JNU controversies as expected. But it was the ferocity with which she did so that was the surprise. Her tone seems to echo the BJP thinking that the nationalist controversy is a vote fetcher for the party.

Her speech would have shaken up not just the opposition, but also many of her party colleagues, specifically Sushma Swaraj, BJP’s top woman face till recently.

Modi groomed Smriti Irani after 2014 win to cut Sushma Swaraj to size, who had opposed him for years,  notes The Telegraph.

The 50-minute speech was a culmination of that move and Modi’s backing is affirmation that Smriti Irani not Sushma Swaraj is the top woman leader of BJP.

The Telegraph further notes that Smriti Irani also used the opportunity to impress the sangh paivaar, with references to Hindutva themes such as Ganga, Shiva and Bharat Mata.

Actress Amy Jackson tweeted a photo showing herself feeding a tiger cub on Wednesday.

Though she did not disclose where the photo was taken, it was probably at the famous Tiger Temple in Thailand, where tourists pay a fee to feed tiger cubs with milk bottles.

Amy was in Thailand this week and had been tweeting from the country.

The actress, a vegetarian and an animal rights activist, was signed up by PETA in 2014 as its ambassador. Recently, she had opposed jallikattu in Tamil Nadu at the risk drawing the ire of the people.

She was probably not aware that the practice of feeding tiger cubs in Thailand is controversial and opposed by animal rights activists.

Tiger Temple in Thailand's Kanchanaburi Province, was founded in 1994 as a forest sanctuary for wild animals, including tigers.

It charges an admission fee and its popular though infamous attraction is tiger cubs, which are handed over to tourists for bottle feeding.

The temple has long been accused by animal rights activists of ill-treating the tigers for commercial gain and even trafficking some of its animals.

The temple was raided by Thai soldiers last year and was subsequently cleared of allegations of animal mistreatment after an investigation by wildlife officials. It was still found possessing 38 protected birds on the temple grounds without license.

Animal rights activists say tiger cubs are separated from their mothers and used to amuse tourists. The constant company of humans and the overfeeding are said to harm them.

There are also questions on what happens to the cubs when they grow up. While the temple needs a large supply of cubs, there are allegedly no record of a proportionate number of adult tigers associated with it.

There is an accusation that adult animals tigers are sent to China, where there is a huge demand for tiger body parts.

ATLASGAL Survey of Milky Way Completed
A spectacular new image of the Milky Way has been released to mark the completion of the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (#ATLASGAL). The APEX telescope in Chile has mapped the full area of the Galactic Plane visible from the southern hemisphere at submillimetre wavelengths — between infrared light and radio waves. This is the sharpest such map yet made, and complements those from recent space-based surveys. Vineet  Jain, the boss of India’s largest media empire, The Times Group, tweeted on Friday saying the government was misusing sedition law.

He noted that the sedition law had been used by the British to jail Gandhi and demanded that it should be repealed.

The Modi government has invoked sedition law against JNU students, who have been charged with shouting anti-national slogans.

In a series of tweets, Vineet  Jain noted that asking for free Kashmir state was not sedition. He, however, added that incitement to violence was punishable but did not deserve life sentence.

Though Vineet Jain tweets frequently, it is perhaps the first time he has stepped into a raging political controversy.

The Times owners are known their lack of interest in politics and do not usually dictate a party line for their media outlets to take.

His stand on sedition is similar to the approach of the flagship daily of the group, The Times of India. But Times Now, a news channel from the same group,  has taken a diametrically opposite stand  on the controversy.

The pro-Dalit bilingual Hindi-English monthly, Forward Press, is reportedly shutting down.

The noted magazine had been raided by Delhipolice last October for printing a Mahishasura illustration that allegedly offended Hindu elements and led to clashes in JNU.

The magazine has covered Mahishasura extensively depicting him as an icon of oppressed classes referring to the popular traditions across the country where he is looked up to than demonised.

Its editor, Pramod Ranjan, told The Telegraph that Forward Press would publish its last issue in June this year.

"…We have continued to face physical attacks, phone threats and online intimidation. With the BJP at the helm, life has become more difficult for us," he said explaining why he was shutting down Forward Press.

The celebration of Mahishasura divas has become a contentious issue between left-wing and right-wing student groups in JNU.

The Hindu reported that in October 2014 left-leaning students distributed pamphlets that was opposed by the right-wing students, who said the leaflets had “objectionable pictures” and text about the Goddess Durga.

It was the text from these pamphlets, Union HRD Minister had tried to read aloud in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, to show that JNU students were indulging in anti-Hindu activities.

A section of JNU students had also put up a poster featuring a painting of Mahishasura by artist Lal Ratnakar, which had been published in the October 2011 issue of Forward Press. It was this poster that reportedly became controversial leading to police raids on Forward Press for offending Hindu sentiments.

Four staffers of magazine Forward Presshad been detained by the police on charges of hurting religious sentiments, according to The Hindu.

A Vice video report has drawn global attention to the waste management practice of the pharmaceutical companies in Hyderabad, which may be creating a superbug resistant to antibiotics.

The pharmaceutical industry in Hyderabad has put Indiaon the world drugs map by emerging as a key exporter of generic drugs. Ironically, the same industry may have become the breeding ground of superbug and threatening local and global health.

The Vice report shows that villagers along the Musi river near Hyderabad complain of sickness, which baffle doctors as there seems to be no drug to treat them.

These villages could be victims of the waste allegedly dumped into the water by Pharma companies, which may be containing high doses of antibiotics.

Superbugs: The Dark Side of India’s Drug Boom (Vice video below)
Prof Joakim Larsson of Sweden’s University of Gothenburg, who has studied the issue, explains what he has found out:

There is more antibiotics in the water here than in the blood of patients

That is making the bacteria here acquire newer forms of resistance

They in turn may transfer resistance to human pathogens

In effect, creating and disseminating a super bug

The local pharma companies say their waste management meets the central and state statutory norms. But as Vice video report points out the statutory norms themselves may be inadequate.

The report filed by Vice journalist Neha Shastry has been viewed over 100,000 times in the last five days.

How different are the various branches of sangh parivar -RSS, BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and so on - from each other?

Some say very - these are independent organisations,  each with own agenda and organisation. Some say they are all the same - brothers in arms working for the same Hindutva cause.

P Sainath, journalist and critic of sangh parivaar, shared an interesting perspective on this in JNU last week.

BJP is RSS on politics, ABVP is RSS on steroids, Bajrang Dal is ABVP on crack, he said.

Sainath was in JNU to express solidarity with the students, who have been accused of raising anti-national slogans.  He had been invited to speak earlier at Hyderabad University following Dalit student Rohith Vemula's suicide.
