The photo was taken when Modi welcomed Hollande in
As the photo went viral and made international news, Washington Post took note of the hug and ran a story describing Modi as a hugger of global proportions. The post’s longish headline said it all: Narendra Modi won’t stop hugging world leaders no matter how awkward it is.
The feature also recapped other eminent personalities from Obama to Zukerberg, who had suffered hugs from the overzealous Indian PM.
It notes that the Hindu’s photographer Akhilesh Kumar had clicked a series of pictures in quick succession. The image which he chose to release created an impression that Modi was trying to hug Hollande from behind.
There is footage from an NDTV report on the Rose garden encounter between Modi and Hollande. Modi is shown leading Hollande gently towards the Indian and French flags to pose for photographers.
In one of the frames, for a nano second, Modi gets behind Hollande and that was captured for posterity.
