The central government wants to change the name and spelling of India's sacred language from "Sanskrit" to "Samskrit" .

The UGC has decided to shift the nomenclature following a recommendation by a 13-member expert committee, headed by former chief election commissioner N. Gopalaswami.

The Telegraph reports that a recent circular sent by UGC to higher education institutions and universities follows the new spelling, "Samskrit".

There seems to be wide support to changing the spelling as Sanskrit was a distortion introduced by the British and has been in use only in the last 200 years.

Telegraph quotes Jnanpith award winner Satya Vrat Shastri saying the correct spelling should be "Samskrita," which is still in vogue in many Indian languages.

But for now the government seems content to stop at  "Samskrit".
