Tantalising Subhas Chandra Bose-related findings in Gumnami Baba’s belongings – But that does not turn Baba into Netaji

The belongings of Faizabad ascetic Gumnami Baba have revealed tantalising objects, which are linked to Subhas Chandra Bose.

Gumnami Baba’s belongings are being moved from Faizabad to a museum in Ayodhya.

Among the interesting objects that have surfaced so far:

* Old photographs of Netaji Subhas Bose's family

* Telegrams sent by Azad Hind Fauj veterans Pabitra Mohan Roy (senior officer of INA's intelligence wing) and Sunil Kant Gupta on Durga Puja and January 23, Netaji's birthday.

* A German binocular similar to the type Netaji and other members of the INA used

* A copy of letter sent on August 19, 1977 to the Prime Minister's office requesting to re-examine evidences submitted to the Khosla Commission and Shahnawaz Commission on the Taihoku plane crash.

* A copy of the book Himalayan Blunder was also spotted. It has passages marked important and most important.

These artefacts may strengthen the notion held by a few that Gumnami Baba was Netaji living incognito, a claim denied by serious historians.

There are also objects that would be hard to associate with Subhas Chandra Bose.

A letter written by RSS chief M S Golwalkar on September 16, 1972 has also been retrieved from Gumnami Baba’s belongings.

The letter shows mutual affection and interest between the two, which would have been out of place with Subhas Chandra Bose’s character.

Netaji  was a staunch opponent of communalism and had banned Congress members from having dual membership with both Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League.
