The Maharani women’s college in Bangalore became a battleground on Saturday as two groups of students clashed over the transfer of the principal Komala.
As the TV cameras rushed to the Maharani college, the girls raised slogans, shouted at each other and even came to blows. They splashed water on each other and took on the police who tried to intervene.
The police struggled to get the situation under control as the girls of opposing groups, divided between commerce and arts streams, refused to relent.
Reports say trouble at Maharani college started 20 days ago when the principal Komala got two Commerce faculty members, Madhumita and Narayana transferred.
This reportedly upset the commerce students, who have been agitating to get their lecturers back, and also pressing for the transfer of the principal Komala, for the last 10 days.
They allegedly have the support of the head of the commerce department Prakash.
The trouble at Maharani college escalated after the education department transferred Komala out of the college, for reasons which are not clear at this stage.
This reportedly upset a section of students largely from the arts stream, who started a counter agitation in support of the transferred principal.
The tension came to a head on Saturday when both the groups came with two effigies – Komala’s and Prakash’s -- and tried to burn them.
