Her crime: trashing rumours that there was a communal angle to the ghastly murder of Dr Narang.

Monika Bharadwaj decided to deflate the communal rhetoric and tweeted on Friday saying of the nine arrested for the murder, five were Hindus.

Her proactive policing did not go down well with many; they flung wild accusations at her imputing all kinds of motives.

When she was the SP of Karaikal, Puducherry, a 21 year woman was gang-raped allegedly by criminals close to a political party. The local MLA gave statements casting aspersions on the character of the woman. The main accused was allegedly close to the MLA.

Taking cue, the lower rungs of the police went easy on the suspects.

Monika Bharadwaj cracked the whip and suspended a sub-inspector of police and a police constable for failing initially to lodge an FIR. She ensured that 12 persons were arrested for the crime, including those boasting of political clout. Many Monika Bharadwaj Facebook fan pages cropped up in Tamil after the incident.

A year prior to that she had played a key role in controlling industrial violence in Yanam. The town was rocked by a series of violent incidents, which included the killing of a union leader and the workers lynching an official of a ceramic company in retaliation. She was sent there to restore normalcy.

Monika Bharadwaj is daughter of a Haryana sub inspector and seems to have the right policing instinct to manage law and order. She cleared UPSC in 2008 scoring 142nd rank and got into IPS with the AGUMT cadre. Her sister Indu is also a civil servant.
