It is an old trick to make a water melon burst its red innards out by tying it tightly with rubber bands.

But Buzzfeed was on a fact-finding mission – how many rubber bands would it take to make the water melon explode.

After it announced that it was streaming the event live, an astounding 800,000 people gathered to watch the action online, perhaps heralding a new era in entertainment.

Most of them watched two Buzzfeed employees in space-age suit tie the rubber bands around the fruit.

They were not disappointed as the water exploded brilliance after 690 rubber bands were tied.
